Obituaries
Mr. Nathaniel Harvey Conner
Mr. Nathaniel Harvey Conner of 4167 Cowford Road, Halifax died Friday,
June 22, 2007 at Halifax Regional Hospital. Born April 6, 1957 in Halifax
County, he was 50 at the time of his death. He was the son of the late
James Harvey Cliborne and Margaret Virginia Conner and was married to
Alice Louise Conner. He was employed by EC Lewis Construction Company and
was an avid fisherman and hunter. Mr. Conner is survived by his wife of
the home, two daughters, Cassie Marie Conner and Anna Elizabeth Conner,
both of Halifax and one brother, Steve Allen Conner and wife Diane of
South Boston and three sisters, Linda C. Francis and husband Jimmy of
Scottsburg, Mary C. Seate and husband Larry of Roxboro, NC and Julie C.
Elliott and husband Ken of Vernon Hill. He was preceded in death by his
mother and father and his grandmother Mary C. Cliborne and by one nephew,
Ron Sterling Wilmouth.
A graveside service will be held Tuesday, June 26 at 2 p.m. at Pleasant
Grove Christian Church cemetery with the Rev. Randy Holmes officiating.
Visitation will be held Monday night at Powell Funeral Home from 7 until
8:30 p.m. and at other times at his home.
Mrs. Agate June Adams Briley
Mrs. Agate June Adams Briley of 1060 Temple Hill Road,
Scottsburg died Friday, June 22, 2007 at Halifax Regional Hospital. She
was born in Penn, PA on June 4, 1923 and was 84 years old. She was the
daughter of the late Dr. William Washington Adams and Callie Palmer Adams
and was married to the late Russell Briley. She was a member of Emanuel
Episcopal Church.
Mrs. Briley is survived by a son, Kenneth Crenshaw and wife Alfie of
Vernon Hill, three daughters, Carol Perkins Sparks and husband Charles of
South Boston, Barbara Perkins Smith and husband Dennis of California and
Brenda Perkins Irby and husband Edward of Scottsburg, eleven
grandchildren, Tammy, Kenneth and Hurley Crenshaw, Ramona, Chuck and
Stephanie Sparks, Johnny Smith, David, Robert and Russell Irby, twenty-one
great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by one grandchild, Darrin
Smith and eight sisters.
A funeral service for Mrs. Briley will be conducted on Tuesday, June 26 at
11 a.m. at Powell Funeral Home with Rev. Russell Irby officiating. Burial
will follow in the Emanuel Episcopal Church cemetery. Visitation will be
held at Powell Funeral Home Monday night from 7 until 8:30 p.m. and at
other times at the home of Brenda and Edward Irby, 1060 Temple Hill Road,
Scottsburg.
Mr. Donnie Gunn, Jr.
Mr. Donnie Gunn, Jr. of Cocoa, FL passed away June 22, 2007 at the age of
61. Born August 31, 1945 to John Leon Gunn and Eva Pearl Gunn, he was an
Air Force veteran and retired employee of Phillip Morris.
Mr. Gunn is survived by his wife Betty E. Gunn of the home, four children,
Kim Wilson (David) of Mineral, Kristie Sheridan (Mike) of Kents Store,
Matt Gunn (Mitzi) of Clover and Lane Gunn of South Boston; five sisters,
Doris Gleason of Powhatan, Harriet (Mark) Gunn of Milwaukee, WI, Barbara
Sellers of New Port Richey, FL, Deloris Ann Gunn of Chesterfield, Mary
(Lucky) Eichmann, Sheboygan, WI, two brothers Carl (Judy) Gunn of Elkart
Lake, WI and Gary S. Gunn of Powhatan and a host of nieces and nephews and
the eight wonderful grandchildren that he loved so dearly — Blake and
Jessica Wilson, Ben and Luke Sheridan, Maranda, Madison and Joshua and
Taylor Gunn. He was preceded in death by his mother, Eva Pearl Gunn and
his brother, Larry J. Gunn.There will be a memorial service held for Mr.
Gunn on August 11, 2007 at the Winn’s Creek Baptist Church in Halifax at 1
p.m.
Mrs. Joyce Mae Leewood Williams
Mrs. Joyce Mae Leewood Williams of 1901 Parker Avenue,
South Boston died Tuesday, June 19, 2007 at Halifax Regional Hospital at
the age of 75. Born in Halifax County on December 5, 1931 to the late Mr.
John P. Leewood and Mrs. Beatrice Jones Leewood, she was married to the
late Mr. Calvin D. Williams, Sr. and was a member of Ebenezer CME Church.
Mrs. Williams is survived by two sons, Mr. Thomas Williams of Raleigh, NC
and Mr. Calvin D. Williams, Jr. of Seattle, Washington, a brother, Mr.
Carnell Leewood of Bronx, New York, three grandchildren, Ms. Sharon
Williams of Brooklyn, NY, Mr. Christopher Williams and Mr. Matthew
Williams, both o Louisville, Kentucky, a daughter-in-law, Mrs. Ruth
Williams, three sisters-in-law, Mrs. Mary Leewood and Mrs. Marie Leewood,
both of Bronx, NY and Mrs.Gwen Williams of South Boston, a brother-in-law,
Mr. Edward Williams of South Boston and a host of nieces, nephews, other
relatives and friends. In addition to her husband, Mrs. Williams was
preceded in death by one son, Mr. James Tyrone Williams.
A funeral service for Mrs. Williams was held on Saturday, June 23 at 11
a.m. at Ebenezer CME Church with the Rev. Michelle Parker officiating.
Burial followed in Halifax Memorial Gardens. Those wishing to give
memorials are asked to consider the Ebenezer CME Church Building Fund,
2309 North Main Street, South Boston, VA 24592.
Mr. John William Loftis, Sr.
Mr. John William Loftis, Sr. of South Boston died Thursday, June 21, 2007
at Halifax Regional Hospital. Born July 23, 1936, in Halifax County, he
was 70 at the time of his death. He was the son of the late Hurt and Addie
Loftis and was married to Shirley S. Loftis. He was a member of Black
Walnut Baptist Church and retired from the Virginia Department of
Transportation. He was a lifetime member of the Cluster Springs Volunteer
Fire Department.
Mr. Loftis is survived by his wife of the home, a son, John W. Loftis, Jr.
of Streator, IL, and three daughters, Patsy L. Queensberry of Nathalie,
Sherry L. Stevens and husband Allen of Halifax, Wendy L. Carrington of
Florida, six grandchildren, four great grandchildren and one brother, Pete
Loftis of Alton. He was preceded in death by one son, Ricky O. Loftis, a
grandson, Bedford Allen and two sisters, Betty Long and Bessie Clay.
A funeral service for Mr. Loftis was conducted Sunday, June 24, 2007 at 2
p.m. at Black Walnut Baptist Church in Cluster Springs with the Rev.
Raymond Wooten officiating. Burial followed in the church cemetery. Those
wishing to give memorials are asked to consider the Black Walnut Baptist

Mr. Maxie Ray Floyd
Mr. Maxie Ray Floyd, 88, of 3210 Gann Avenue, South Boston, formerly of
Moncks Corner, SC, died Wednesday, June 20, 2007 at The Woodview. He was
born in Florence, SC on May 5, 1919, a son of the late Maxie Laverne Floyd
and Agnes Lane Floyd and was married to Mary Boyd Floyd. He was a member
of First Baptist Church of Moncks Corner, SC, where he served as a deacon
and Sunday school teacher and he was an Army veteran of World War II and a
Master Electrician.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by one son, Levon Ray Floyd and
wife Dianne of South Boston; two brothers, Ralph Preston Floyd of Geneva,
FL and Lane Floyd of Florence, SC; one grandson, Kevin Ray Floyd and wife
Christi of Charlotte, NC; one granddaughter, Kimberly Floyd Crawford and
husband Greg of Chester; two great-grandchildren, Elysie Judianne Crawford
and Luke Aiden Floyd. He was preceded in death by three brothers, Marvin,
Travis and Lynn Floyd and two sisters, Katherine Gatlin and Phoebe Floyd.
Graveside services were held Friday, June 22 at 3:00 p.m. at Dan River
Baptist Church Cemetery with Rev. Doug Gibson officiating. Memorials may
be directed to South Boston Alzheimer's Association, c/o Seasons at The
Woodview, 301 Powell Road, South Boston, VA 24592.
