OBITUARIES

Lester Layne Dillard

Mr. Lester Layne Dillard, Jr. of 1403 Friend Avenue, South Boston died
at his home Friday, June 20, 2008. Born in Spotsylvania County on
September 21, 1919, he was 88 years old at the time of his death. He
was the son of the late Lester Layne Dillard, Sr. and Eva Lovelace Tuck
and was married to the late Betty Lawson Dillard. He was an attorney
for over fifty years with Tuck, Bagwell, Dillard, Mapp and Nelson, a
law firm established by his stepfather, the late William Munford Tuck,
former Governor of Virginia. After his son, Les III joined the firm, it
was reorganized as Tuck, Dillard, Nelson and Dillard. He was a member
of the first Presbyterian Church where he was a Deacon, Elder, Trustee
and Sunday School teacher. He also was a WWII Navy veteran assigned to
the Battleship USS Missouri where he witnessed the Japanese surrender.
He was an avid golfer and sportsman and was recently inducted into the
Halifax County Sports Hall of Fame. He once won the club championship
at Halifax Country Club.
Mr. Dillard is survived by two daughters, Sally Dillard Hauptfuhrer and
husband George of Atlanta, GA and Eva Lovelace and husband, Mark
Whiteside of Birmingham, AL and a daughter-in-law, Donna Garrett and
husband Glenn of South Boston, six grandchildren, Barbara Hauptfuhrer
and Tuck Hauptfuhrer, both of Charlotte, NC, Lawson Hauptfuhrer of
Atlanta, GA, Will and Eliza Dillard, both of South Boston and Jay
McSlarrow of Birmingham, AL.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Betty Lawson Dillard and by two
sons, William Munford Tuck Dillard and Lester Layne Dillard, III.
A funeral service for Mr. Dillard will be held today, June 23 at 11
a.m. at First Presbyterian Church with the Rev. Dr. Russell Lee
officiating. Burial will follow in the Oak Ridge cemetery.

First Presbyterian Church, the South Boston-Halifax County Historical

 Anderson Adams Arthur
Mr. Anderson Adams Arthur, 75, of 5160 Bill Tuck Highway, South Boston
died Thursday, June 19, 2008 at his home.  He was born in Campbell
County on August 3, 1932, a son of the late Sallie Davis Arthur and
Ellis Arthur and was married to Pauline Tharp Arthur.  He was a member
of the former Pentecostal-Holiness Church, Clover and attended South
Boston Church of God.  He was an Army Korean Conflict veteran and a
self-employed mechanic.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by two daughters, Vickie L.
Lowery and Sharon Arthur, both of South Boston; one brother, Ellis
Arthur of Altavista; two sisters, Lois A. Robinett of Fort Mitchell and
Gloria Matthews of Dundas; one grandson, Danny Franklin.  He was
preceded in death by a daughter, Renaa A. Franklin and son, Donald
Arthur.
Funeral services were held Saturday, June 21 at South Boston Church of
God with Rev. Dr. Bruce Hagy officiating.  Memorials may be directed to

 Lena Majors Garland
Mrs. Lena Majors Garland, 99, of 1017 Jordan Trail, South Boston died
Tuesday, June 17, 2008 at Halifax Regional Hospital.  She was born in
Halifax County on March 30, 1909, a daughter of the late Mr. Tillman
Majors and Mrs. Nancy Lawson Majors.  She was married to the late Mr.
Briggs Garland and was a member of Dan River Bethel Baptist Church.
She is survived by two daughters, Mrs. Beatrice Jones of the home and
Ms. Nancy Garland of Washington, DC; two sons, Mr. Berkley Garland of
the home and Mr. Venable Lee Garland of Washington, DC; seven
grandchildren, 16 great-grandchildren, 19 great-great-grandchildren;
one daughter-in-law, Mrs. Barbara Garland, other relatives and friends.
  She was preceded in death by two sisters, Mrs. Dorothy Chandler and
Mrs. Martha Goodman and two brothers, Mr. Nathan Majors and Mr. Junious
Majors.
Funeral services were held Saturday, June 21 with services at Dan River
Bethel Baptist Church with Rev. Dwight Wilkerson officiating.  Burial
followed in the church cemetery.

 

 Mary Ingram Richardson
Mrs. Mary Ingram Richardson of 528 Wentworth Drive, South Boston died
Friday, June 20, 2008 at Halifax Regional Hospital.  She was born in
Clover, a daughter of the late Erastus Jones Ingram and Willie Walker
Watts Ingram.  She was married to the late Cecil T. Richardson and was
a member of First Crossroads Baptist Church.
She is survived by one brother, David (Sid) Ingram of Halifax; three
sisters, Arlene Oaks and Peggy Wilkins, both of South Boston, Sallie
Elliott of Oxford, NC, other relatives and friends.  She was preceded
in death by two brothers, Wesley and Ellis J. Ingram and one sister,
Betty Smith.
Graveside services were held Sunday, June 22 at Halifax Memorial
Gardens with Rev. Randy Holmes officiating.  Memorials may be directed
to the American Red Cross, 1030 Cowford Road, Halifax, VA 24558.

 

 Donald “Donnie” Watson
Mr. Donald “Donnie” Watson of East Elkhorn Road, Java died June 21,
2008 at Berry Hill Nursing Home at the age of 54. Born in Philadelphia,
PA on January 4, 1954, he was the son of the late Mr. Edward Watson and
Mrs. Rosa Tucker Watson. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in
death by a brother, Mr. Elliott Watson.
Mr. Watson is survived by three aunts, Mrs. Amazie Terry and Mrs. Maude
Austin, both of Java and Ms. Dianna Coleman of Philadelphia, PA, four
uncles,  Mr. Loyal Tucker, Mr. Stanford Moore and Mr. Harold Tucker,
all of Java and Mr. Junior Moore of Philadelphia, PA, a host of cousins
including the devoted Mr. AcArthur Stephens and Mr. Robert Stephens and
many other relatives and friends.
A funeral service for Mr. Watson will be held on Monday, June 23 at 11
a.m. with services at the Crawford House Chapel in Halifax. Burial will
follow in the Elkhorn Baptist Church cemetery. The family will receive
friends at the service on Monday.

 

 Ronald Leon Guy
Mr. Ronald Leon Guy, Jr., age 31 of Bedford and formerly of Nathalie,
died June 15, 2008.
He is survived by his daughter, Rinaya of the home; parents, Deacon
Ronald Guy, Sr. and Mrs. Emma Jones Guy of Nathalie; his fiancee',
Tijuana Clark and daughter, Timaya Clark of the home; a brother, Otis
Byrd of Washington, DC; one sister, Alicia Guy of Nathalie;
grandparents, Mr. Leroy Jones of Brookneal and Mr. Bennie White, Sr. of
Hartford, CT; a devoted niece, Ashante' Lee of Nathalie; and a host of
aunts, uncles, other relatives and friends.
Funeral services were held Sunday, June 22, 2008 at 12 noon at the
Millstone Baptist Church in Nathalie with interment in the church
