Mrs. Mattie Link Ferguson

Mrs. Mattie Link Ferguson, 77, of 526 Easley Street, South Boston died Tuesday, June 12, 2007 at her home. She was born in Halifax County on March 1, 1930, a daughter of the late Mr. George Link and Mrs. Carrie Satterfield Link and was married to Mr. Robert James Ferguson, Sr. She was a member of First Baptist Church, Ferry Street.
In addition to her husband, she is survived by four sons, Mr. James Link of Lynchburg, Mr. Robert J. Ferguson, Jr., Mr. Leo Ferguson and Mr. Wayne Ferguson, all of South Boston; four daughters, Mrs. Theresa Ferguson Richardson and Mrs. Kathy McIver, both of South Boston, Mrs. Cheryl Scott and Ms. Sheryl Ferguson, both of Lynchburg; two sisters, Ms. Annie Link of South Boston and Ms. Thelma Link of Jamaica Queens, NY; two brothers, Mr. Willie Link and Mr. Lacy Link, both of South Boston; 11 grandchildren, 10 great-grandchildren, two sons-in-law, two daughters-in-law, other relatives and friends. She was preceded in death by one sister, Mrs. Millie King and one brother, Mr. George Thomas Link.
Funeral services were held Sunday, June 17 at First Baptist Church, Ferry Street with Rev. Allen G. Smith officiating. Burial followed in Oak Ridge Cemetery.
Mr. Daniel Carroll Hudson
Mr. Daniel Carroll Hudson, 82, of 2242 Clover Road, Clover died Wednesday, June 13, 2007 at Henrico Doctors Hospital. He was born in Clover on June 22, 1924, a son of the late William Hinton Hudson and Lottie Susan Seay Hudson. He was a member of the Clover United Methodist Church, a farmer and a school bus driver for the Halifax County Public School System.He is survived by two sisters, Peggy Ciccolini of Arlington and Nancy H. Griffin Carter of Lewes, Delaware; three brothers, D. Lincoln Hudson of Drakes Branch, Mack Donald Hudson of Richmond and Barney Larry Hudson of Clover; other nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were held Saturday, June 16 at Powell Funeral Home with Rev. Bonnie Pizzeck officiating. Burial followed in Clover Cemetery. Mr. Anthony Ray Compton
Mr. Anthony Ray Compton, 52, of 1035 Dove Lane, Scottsburg died Wednesday, June 13, 2007 at his home. He was born in Halifax County on October 2, 1954, a son of the late Carl B. Compton and Janie McDaniel Compton and was married to Charlotte Mills Compton. He was a member of Bethel Baptist Church and a former employee of ABB.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by one daughter, Kelli Davis Hines of Scottsburg; son, Jamie Lee Davis of Scottsburg; two brothers, Tommy Compton and wife Roselane of Scottsburg and Steve Compton and wife Susan of Chesterfield.Funeral services were held Saturday, June 16 at South Boston Church of God with Rev. Dr. Bruce Hagy and Rev. Bob Rudman officiating. Burial followed in Bethel Baptist Church Cemetery. Memorials may be directed to Halifax Regional Hospice, 2204 Wilborn Avenue, South Boston, VA 24592

Mrs. Wilda Bell Thompson,
Mrs. Wilda Bell Thompson, 70, of 1123 Burton Road, Scottsburg died Wednesday, June 13, 2007 in Winston Salem, NC. She was born August 30, 1936 in Alamance County, NC, a daughter of the late Abraham Allen Bell and Hermie Sutton Bell and was married to Owen E. Thompson. She was a member of Ingram Memorial Pentecostal Holiness Church, a volunteer for Scottsburg Volunteer Fire Department and was a retired inspector with Burlington Industries, Inc.In addition to her husband, she is survived by one son, Mark E. Thompson and wife Elona of Winston Salem, NC; one brother, Jerry Leon Bell of Burlington, NC; one sister, Angie Bell Hopson of Snow Camp, NC; three granddaughters, Tasha Wright, Kimberly Davis, Jennifer Forlines; one step-granddaughter, Annette Canterbury; three great-grandchildren, two step-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by two brothers, Everette Allen Bell and David Worth Bell.Funeral services were held Saturday, June 16 at Ingram Memorial Pentecostal Holiness Church with Rev. Robert Heim, Rev. Ron Saxton and Rev. Grant Dyer officiating. Burial followed in Halifax Memorial Gardens. Memorials may be directed to the Scottsburg Volunteer Fire Department.
Mrs. Dorothy Davenport Gulley Slaughter
Mrs. Dorothy Davenport Gulley Slaughter of 2219 Scottsburg Road, Scottsburg died Friday, June 15, 2007 at South Boston Manor. Born in Halifax County on April 4, 1924, she was 83 at the time of her death. She was a daughter of the late Henry Samuel Davenport and Ruby Wilburn Davenport and was married first to William A. Gulley, Sr. and then to Jesse B. Slaughter. She was a member of the Scottsburg United Methodist Church where she was a member of the United Methodist Women and she was also a member of the Scottsburg Volunteer Fire Department Ladies Auxiliary.
Mrs. Slaughter is survived by two sons, James T. Gulley and wife Suzanne of South Boston and William A. Gulley, Jr. and wife Josephine of Alton and five grandchildren, Mary Jo Irby and husband, Mark of Clover, Sharlene Riddlebarger and husband Nick of Lynchburg, James Thomas Gulley, Jr. of Wilmington, NC, Krista Comer and husband Craig of South Boston and Jonathan Gulley of Scottsburg and six great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a brother, Wilson Davenport.A funeral service for Mrs. Slaughter will be conducted on Monday, June 18 at 11 a.m. at Scottsburg United Methodist Church with the Rev. Bonnie Pizzeck officiating. Burial will follow in Oak Ridge cemetery. The family will receive friends at her home, 2219 Scottsburg Road, Scottsburg. Mr. Charlie Swanson Powell
Mr. Charlie Swanson Powell of 2074 Wolf Trap Road, South Boston died Saturday, June 16, 2007 at Duke Medical Center. Born in Halifax County on May 9, 1942, he was 65 years of age at the time of his death. He was the son of the late Wiley Robert Powell and Bessie Rickman Powell and was married to Allie Seamster Powell. He was a member of the Scottsburg Baptist Church.
Mr. Powell is survived by his wife of the home, a sister, Susan Powell Canada and husband, Kenneth of South Boston, his mother of South Boston, two sisters-in-law, Alease Grimm and husband, James of Newport News, Betty Powell of South Boston. He was preceded in death by a brother, Robert L. Powell and a sister, Edith Ann Powell and a number of nieces and nephews.
A funeral service for Mr. Powell will be held Tuesday, June 19 at 2 p.m. at Powell Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Terry Scarce officiating. Burial will follow in the Oakland Cemetery. The family will receive friends Monday, June 18 from 7 until 8:30 p.m. at Powell Funeral Home and at other times at the home, 2074 Wolf Trap Road, South Boston, VA.
