Phebe Roberts Ward A graveside memorial service
will be held for Phebe Roberts Ward at Dan
River Baptist Church Saturday, June 16 at 11:00 a.m. . Mrs. Ward,
91, formerly of Halifax County, died December 16, 2006 at her home in
Annapolis, Maryland. Born in Halifax County on September 11, 1915 she was
the daughter of the late Thomas Reeks Roberts and Lucy Careless Nash and
was married to the late Arthur Easton Ward. She was a member of Dan River
Baptist Church and was a registered nurse.Mrs. Ward is survived by a
daughter Lucy Carter of Laurel, Delaware, sons, Thomas Ward of New Mexico,
Arthur Ward of Seattle, WA, Mervin Ward of Riverdale, MD, Edgar Ward of
Halifax, seven grandchildren, seven great grandchildren and four great
great grandchildren.
Mrs. Willie Blanche Rowland Saunders
Mrs. Willie Blanche Rowland Saunders of 708 Magnolia Drive, South
Boston died Tuesday, June 12, 2007 at Heritage Hall, Brookneal. Born in
Pittsylvania County on September 25, 1918, she was 88 at the time of
her death. She was a homemaker and a member of Mulberry Baptist Church.
Mrs. Saunders is survived by four sons, Rev. Richard Saunders and wife,
Laverne of Halifax, Clyde Saunders and wife, Bernice of Nathalie, Roger
Saunders and wife Bunny of Vernon Hill and Larry Saunders and wife,
Linda of South Boston and by four daughters, Linda Martin and husband,
Earl "Sonny" of Nathalie, Betty S. Lloyd and husband, Gene of South
Boston, Jean Lee and husband, Billy of Brookneal and Connie Tuck and
husband, Tony of Lynch Station, 20 grandchildren, 22 great
grandchildren and six step grandchildren. She was preceded in death by
her husband, Charlie Thornton Saunders, her parents, William Henry
Rowland and Abbie Compton Rowland, one grandchild and one great
grandchild.
A funeral service for Mrs. Saunders will be conducted on Friday, June
15 at 2 p.m. at Mulberry Baptist Church with the Rev. Richard Saunders
officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. The family will
receive friends at Brooks Funeral Home from 7 to 8:30 p.m. and at other
times at the home of Richard and Laverne Saunders, 1020 West Oak Hill

Mr. William Garrett "Jiggs" Walton
Mr. William Garrett "Jiggs" Walton of South Boston, Virginia died
Tuesday, June 12, 2007 at his home. Born in Pittsylvania County on
September 26, 1915, he was 91 at the time of his death. He was the son
of the late Richard Hickson Walton and Emma Womack Walton and was
married to Claire Henderson Walton for 61 years.
Mr. Walton graduated from Oak Level High School and attended the
University of Richmond where he pitched baseball for the University
under Coach Pitt. He was in the Class of 1939.
He was a World War II veteran and served in the European Theater in the
647th Medical Clearing Company, following Gen. Patton through France,
Luxenburg, Germany and Austria. After his discharge he went to work for
the South Boston Bank and Trust Company in South Boston, Virginia in
January 1946. He retired in 1984 as Vice-President of Sovran Bank, now
Bank of America, after 39 years.
He was a member of the City Council of the City of South Boston and was
an active member of the First Baptist Church, South Boston, having
served as Superintendent of Sunday School, Deacon and chairman of the
Building Committee when the new sanctuary was built.
Mr. Walton is survived by his wife of the home, a son, William Garrett
"Garry" Walton, Jr. and wife Sally Phipps Walton of Raleigh, NC and a
daughter, Jane Walton Webb and husband, Mark of Charlottesville, two
grandsons, Jonathan Walton of Boston, Massachusetts and Leigh Garrett
Walton of Portland, Oregon. He was preceded in death by two sisters,
Sarah Richie and Rebecca Jones.
A funeral service for Mr. Walton will be conducted on Friday, June 15,
2007 at 2 p.m. at First Baptist Church with the Rev. Dr. Tim Cannon
officiating. Burial will follow in Oak Ridge Cemetery. The family will
receive friends at Powell Funeral Home on Thursday evening from 7 until
8:30 p.m.

Mrs. Clara Marie Granger Adams,
Mrs. Clara Marie Granger Adams, age 78, of Randolph died June 9, 2007
in South Boston. The daughter of the late Mr. Willie Granger and Mrs.
Lucille Davis Granger, she was married to the late Mr. Robert F.
"Sterling" Adams.
Mrs. Adams is survived by one son, Roger Adams (Mary) of Randolph, two
grandchildren, Dantavious and Andrea Adams, four great grandchildren
Danesha, Courtney, Dantavious, Jr. and Devon; four sisters, Fannie
Brown, Juanita Leigh (C.D.), Mary West (Lindsey) and Josephine Wells,
one brother, Willie Granger, Jr., two sisters-in-law, Esther Hill and
Estelle Adams, two brothers-in-law, Willie Adams and Samuel Adams and a
host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
A funeral service for Mrs. Adams will be held on Saturday, June 16,
2007 at 11 a.m. at the New Shiloh Baptist Church in Nathalie with Rev.
Sylvester Crawley conducting the service. Burial will follow in the

Mr. Luther Jackson
Mr. Luther Jackson, Sr., 77, of 1051 Quarles School Trail, Nathalie
died Saturday, June 9, 2007 at The Woodview. He was born in Halifax
County on June 25, 1929, a son of the late Mr. Samuel Jackson and Mrs.
Lucy Palmer Jackson and was married to the late Mrs. Willie Marie
Miller Jackson. He was a member of Brown's Memorial Church of God in
Christ.
He is survived by four daughters, Mrs. Deborah Sydnor, Mrs. Claire
Jennings and Ms. Frances Jackson, all of Nathalie and Mrs. Peggy
Hankins of South Boston; three sons, Mr. Luther Jackson, Jr. of
Halifax, Mr. Samuel Jackson of Clover and Mr. Michael Jackson of
Hampton; 14 grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren; seven sisters,
Mrs. Virginia Ewell and Mrs. Mary Eldridge, both of Baltimore, MD, Mrs.
Laverne Faulkner and Mrs. Joanne Coles, both of Alexandria, Mrs.
Catherine Chandler of Halifax, Mrs. Marion Clements of Nathalie, Mrs.
Evelyn Jennings of Crystal Hill; one brother, Mr. Carl Jackson of
Nathalie; other relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by one
sister, Mrs. Lucy Chambers and one brother, Mr. Willie H. Jackson.
Funeral services will be held Friday, June 15 at 2:00 p.m. at Crystal
Hill Baptist Church with Elder William E. Mosby, Jr. officiating.
Burial will follow at Browns Memorial Church of God in Christ. Public
viewing will be today from 10:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. and the family will
meet at the home, 1051 Quarles School Trail, Nathalie.
