Mrs. Lois Rachel Carden
Mrs. Lois Rachel Carden of 1014 Allen Trail, Scottsburg
died Tuesday, June 5, 2007 at her home at the age of 91. Born in Halifax
County on May 14, 1916 to the late Mr. Abraham Mitchell and Mrs. Mary
Mitchell, she was married to the late Mr. Banister Carden and was a member
of Spanish Grove Baptist Church.
Mrs. Carden is survived by one son, Mr.. James E. Carden of Scottsburg, a
brother, Mr. Silas Mitchell of Maryland, two grandchildren, Mrs. Erlene
Sydnor of Scottsburg and Mrs. Darlene Davis of South Boston, four great
grandchildren, Mr. Shawn Barksdale, Ms. Tiffany Walker, Mr. Brian Sydnor
and Ms. Amber Sydnor, a great great granddaughter, Ms. Ashya Barksdale, a
daughter-in-law, Mrs. Havana Carden of Scottsburg, a brother-in-law, Mr.
Mathis Carden of New Brunswick, New Jersey, a devoted friend, Naomi Carden
of Scottsburg and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and
friends.
A funeral service for Mrs. Carden will be conducted on Sunday, June 10 at
3 p.m. with services at Spanish Grove Baptist Church with Rev. Ronnie
Womack officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. The family
will receive friends at the home of Mr. and Mrs. James Edward Carden, 4056
Dryburg Road, Scottsburg.

Mr. Carlton Bowen,
Mr. Carlton Bowen, 74, husband of Joan Hite Bowen, died June 4, 2007 at
his home. The son of Algie Lewis and Mildred Wilkerson Bowen (deceased),
he was born and raised in Mecklenburg County. He was employed with Key
Construction for 40+ years and was a farmer.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by son and daughter-in-law,
Russell and Lauren Bowen and grandsons Tyler, Cole and Zach Bowen, all of
Raleigh, NC; mother-in-law, Rosa Alice Hite of the home; brothers and
sisters, Ike T. Bowen, Algie J. Bowen and Eva B. Prince, all of Buffalo
Junction, Gray Bowen of Halifax, Lois B. Jackson of Alton, Lewis F. Bowen
of Hopewell, and Amos E. Bowen of Crewe; and nieces and nephews. He was
preceded in death by a brother, Jethro Bowen.
Funeral services will be held Thursday, June 7 at 2:00 p.m. at Watkins
Cooper Lyon Funeral Home with Rev. Rodney Barwick officiating. Interment
will follow at Gravel Hill Cemetery. Memorials may be directed to

Hazel Conner Clark McClure
Hazel Conner Clark McClure, 73, of 4209 Old Cluster Springs Road, South
Boston died Monday, June 4, 2007 at Halifax Regional Hospital. She was
born in Halifax County on June 18, 1933, daughter of the late Emmitt
William Conner and Sallie Pat Moore Conner and was married to Homer
McClure. She was a member of Black Walnut Baptist Church and a retired
employee of Burlington Industries, Inc.
In addition to her husband, she is survived by four sisters, Betty C.
Anderson and Irene C. New, both of South Boston, Violet C. Landrum and
Margaret C. Owen, both of Halifax; one brother, John Henry Conner of
Hampton; step-daughters, Nola Fountain of Lexington, NC and Penny McClure
Hargis of Person Co., NC; step-son, Jeffery McClure of Lexington, NC;
step-grandchildren, Michael, Brandon, Travis and Meagan Hargis. She was
preceded in death by her first husband, William F. Clark, a brother Asia "A.C."
Conner and a sister, Nancy C. Harris.
Funeral services were held Wednesday, June 6 at Brooks Funeral Home Chapel
with Rev. Richard Saunders officiating. Burial followed in Halifax
Memorial Gardens. Memorials may be directed to the Halifax County Rescue
Squad, P.O. Box 183, South Boston, VA 24592.
Mrs. Sarah Waller Poindexter
Mrs. Sarah Waller Poindexter, 88, of Nathalie died Sunday, June 3, 2007 at
Memorial Hospital, Martinsville. She was born in Pittsylvania County on
February 5, 1919, daughter of the late Mr. Robert Woodson Waller and Mrs.
Mary Hodnett Waller. She was married to the late Mr. James Junior
Poindexter and a member of Mount Airy Baptist Church.
She is survived by three daughters, Mrs. Lizzie O. Johnson of Bentonville,
IL, Mrs. Sandra P. Brim of Martinsville and Mrs. Sarah P. Sawyer of
Roanoke; three sons, Mr. James R. Poindexter of San Antonio, TX, Mr.
Fabian O. Poindexter, Sr. of Nathalie and Mr. William L. Poindexter, Sr.
of Sutherlin; 12 grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren, two sons-in-law,
two daughters-in-law, three sisters-in-law, one brother-in-law, other
relatives and friends. She was preceded in death by three sisters, three
brothers and one great-granddaughter.
Funeral services were held Wednesday, June 6 at Sunflower Baptist Church
with Rev. Robert Tucker officiating. Burial followed in the church
cemetery.
Mr. Christopher "Chris" Glenn Throckmorton
Mr. Christopher "Chris" Glenn Throckmorton of 1032 Wagstaff Lane,
Scottsburg died Monday, June 4, 2007 at Medical College of Virginia,
Richmond. He was born in Halifax County on November 17, 1963, son of
Thomas A. Throckmorton and Pauline Wagstaff Throckmorton. He was a member
of Bethel Baptist Church.
In addition to his parents, he is survived by two sisters, Felicia F.
Throckmorton of Scottsburg and Sheila T. Rimmer and husband Lennie of
Powhatan; nieces and nephews, Misty Mulchi, Ashley Rimmer, Thomas
Christopher Rimmer, Dustin Rimmer, Jozlyn Hill and Katrina Hill. He was
preceded in death by a brother, Tommy Throckmorton.
Graveside services will be held today at 3:00 p.m. at Bethel Baptist
Church with Rev. Alfred Rimmer officiating.
Mrs. Margaret Gravitt Harris,
Mrs. Margaret Gravitt Harris, 85, of Roxboro, NC died Tuesday, June 5,
2007 at Person Memorial Hospital. She was a native of Halifax County, VA,
daughter of the late Ira Thomas and Shellie Altie Watts Gravitt. She was
married to the late William Haywood Harris, Jr. and was retired from
Tultex and of the Baptist faith.
She is survived by three daughters, Montie H. Dunn, Elizabeth H. Buchanan
both of Roxboro, NC, Katie H. Shotwell and husband Jr. of Alton; three
sons, Jimmy Harris and wife Margaret "Boo" and Emmett Harris all of
Roxboro, NC and Robert Harris and wife Kathie of Seattle, WA; one sister,
Lorene Nelson of Virgilina; 16 grandchildren, 18 great-grandchildren. She
was preceded in death by two daughters, Hannah Braswell and Portia Harris,
two brothers and two sisters.
Funeral services will be held Saturday, June 9 at 2:00 p.m. at Strickland
Funeral Home Chapel, Roxboro, NC with interment to follow in the Regan
Family
