Brandon Marqui Scott
Brandon Marqui Scott of 1401 Llewellyn Avenue, South Boston died at
Halifax Regional Hospital at the age of 9 on Friday, June 1, 2007. He was
born April 30, 1998, the son of Mr. Breon Mebane Scott and Mrs. Jonita
Marable Scott. He attended Spanish Grove Baptist Church and was an honor
roll student at C.H. Friend Elementary School. Brandon enjoyed
sports and was a member of the South Boston Dixie Youth League (Hill
Catering Yankees), South Boston Youth Basketball League (Sonics & Cougars)
and the Halifax County Football league (South Boston Cobras). In addition
to his parents, he is survived by a brother, Jairus Marable of South
Boston, his maternal grandparents, Mr. Joseph Marable and Mrs. Jane
Marable of Chesapeake, his paternal grandmothers, Mrs. Velma Scott of
Clover and Mrs. Charlene Mebane of Danville, his maternal great
grandparents, Rev. and Mrs. Freddie jeffress, Sr. of Scottsburg and a host
of aunts, uncles, cousins, other relatives and friends.
A funeral service for Brandon will be conducted on Wednesday, June 6 at 12
noon at the Spanish Grove Baptist Church with Rev. Ronnie Womack
officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. The family will
receive friends at the home, 1401 Llewellyn Avenue, South Boston.

John Harrell Hite
John Harrell Hite, 89, husband of Geraldine Smith Hite, died Saturday, May
26, 2007 at his home. Native to Halifax County, John Harrell was a
graduate of Virgilina High School, class of 1939, a member of North Fork
Baptist Church after making his profession of faith in 1928, he was a past
Director of Sunday School and Deacon. He served in the U.S. Army during
World War II and was a Pearl Harbor survivor. He was retired from Collins
and Aikman.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by brothers Page L. Hite of
Florence, SC and George Tillman Hite of Buffalo Junction. He was preceded
in death by his sister, Sue Vann Hite Weber and brother, Joseph Kilby
Hite.
Funeral services will be held today at 2:00 p.m. at North Fork Baptist
Church with Rev. Hugh Mayes officiating. Burial will follow in the church
cemetery.
Mrs. Anna Catherine Woodall Wells
Mrs. Anna Catherine Woodall Wells, 89, of Fenton Street, South Boston died
Thursday, May 31, 2007 at Halifax Regional Hospital. She was born in South
Boston on February 20, 1918, a daughter of the late Henry W. Woodall and
Josephine Spindler Woodall and was married to the late F. Edward "Pete"
Wells. She was a lifelong member of Main Street United Methodist Church.
She is survived by two sisters-in-law, Louise Wells and Lottie Skiles,
both of Richmond; one niece, Julie Jones and husband Royal of Richmond;
one great-nephew, Zachary Jones of Richmond; special friends her namesake,
Katherine Harris of South Boston, Larry and Lucy Harris of South Boston,
Joan Crowder and Frances Perkins, both of Halifax and Elizabeth Thaxton of
South Boston.
Funeral services were held Sunday, June 3 at Main Street United Methodist
Church with Rev. Ed Rigg officiating. Burial followed in Oak Ridge
Cemetery. Memorials may be directed to the Main Street United Methodist
Church Memorial Fund, 701 N. Main Street, South Boston, VA 24592.
Mr. George W. Jones
Mr. George W. Jones of Alton died Thursday, May 31, 2007 at the age of 77.
Born in Halifax County on July 17, 1929 to the late Mr. John Jones and the
late Mrs. Rosa Stevens Jones, he was married to the late Mrs. Emma Thorpe
Jones. He was a member of New Bethel Baptist Church and was an Army
veteran. Mr. Jones is survived by three daughters, Mrs. Dale Dunn of
Semora, NC, Mrs. Gloria Williams and Mrs. Daisy Brandon, both of Alton,
two sisters, Mrs. Daisy Chambers of Alton and Mrs. Janie Hughes of South
Boston, two brothers, Mr. Jeffery Jones of Florida and Mr. Joseph Jones of
South Boston, four grandchildren, four great great grandchildren, two
sons-in-law, Mr. Larry Williams of Alton and Mr. Herbert Dunn of Semora,
NC, three sisters-in-law, Mrs. Jeraldine Coleman of Alton, Mrs. Betty
Jones of Florida, and Mrs. Evelyn Jones of South Boston, a brother-in-law,
Mr. John Thorpe of Alton and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives
and special friends.
A funeral service for Mr. Jones will be held Tuesday, June 5 at 2 p.m. at
New Bethel Baptist Church in Alton with the Rev. Harvey Bigelow
officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery with military
rites.
The family will receive friends at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Gloria
Williams, 1100 Mills Pond Road, Alton and the home of Mr. and Mrs. Mason
Coleman, 2173 Mt. Carmel Road, Alton.

Mrs. Kathleen Landrum Cole
Mrs. Kathleen Landrum Cole of 3215 Asbury Church Road,
Vernon Hill died Friday, June 1, 2007 in Staunton, Virginia. Born in
Halifax County on April 28, 1918, she was 89 at the time of her death. She
was the daughter of Clarence Oscar Landrum and Ester Dunn Landrum and was
married to the late Aubrey Costen Cole. She was a member of Asbury United
Methodist Church.
Mrs. Cole is survived by one son, James Francis “Frank” Cole of Vernon
Hill, a sister, Elizabeth Rose Owen of South Boston, three grandchildren,
Fran Terry of Danville, Lori Fisher and David Cole of Staunton, six great
grandchildren, Samantha and Jessica Terry, Stephanie Valencia, Christian
Cigarro and Benton and Abigail Fisher. She was preceded in death by a
brother, Clarence Landrum. A funeral service for Mrs. Cole will be
conducted Tuesday, June 5, 2007 at 2 p.m. at the Asbury United Methodist
Church with the Rev. Brian Simmons conducting the service. Burial will
follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends Monday,
June 4, 2007 from 7 until 8:30 p.m. at Powell Funeral Home and at other
times at the home, 3125 Asbury Church Road Vernon Hill. Online condolences
