Obituaries

Mrs. Esther Snead "Puddin" Wilmouth
Mrs. Esther Snead "Puddin" Wilmouth of 1048 Wolftrap Road, South Boston died Wednesday, May 30, 2007 at her home. She was born in Halifax County on February 8, 1929 and was 78 at the time of her death. She was the daughter of the late John Ellis Snead and Esther Dismuke Snead and was married to the late Henry Joseph Wilmouth, Sr. She was a member of Fork Baptist Church.
Mrs. Wilmouth is survived by three sons, Ronnie Davis Wilmouth of South Boston, Buck Wilmouth and wife Phyllis of Scottsburg, Christopher Lynn Wilmouth and wife, Pat of Halifax, one sister, Faye S. Newton and husband Henry of Halifax, seven grandchildren, Valerie A. York and husband Jeff of San Antonio, TX, Misty W. Meade and husband Tony of Nathalie, Kim W. Priest and husband Regan of Woodbridge, Melissa W. Poteat and husband Erik of Halifax, Stephanie Wilmouth and Chris Wilmouth, II, both of Halifax, and Mary Beth Wilmouth of Scottsburg. Also surviving are eight great grandchildren: David Von York, Kaitlyn Marie York, Grey Andrew York, all of San Antonio, TX, Kirstyn Paige Meade and Mason Gray Meade, both of Nathalie, Noah Jackson Priest of Woodbridge, and Jacob Fears and Kamryn Poteat of Halifax. She was preceded in death by five brothers and three sisters.
A funeral service for Mrs. Wilmouth will be held Friday, June 1 at 2 p.m. at Powell Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Jason Murray officiating. Burial will follow in the Fork Baptist Church cemetery. The family will receive friends on Thursday evening from 7 until 8:30 p.m. at Powell Funeral Home and at other times at the home, 1048 Wolftrap Road, South Boston. Mrs. Audrey Kell Queensberry
Mrs. Audrey Kell Queensberry, 67, of Chase City, died May 28, 2007. She was an employee of S.T.E.P.S.
Mrs. Queensberry is survived by her husband of 51 years, Bobby Queensberry; son, Troy Queensberry of Nathalie; daughters, Melody Mull, of Chase City and Terri Rickman of Saxe; sisters, Florence Martin of Halifax and Dorothy Howerton of South Boston; five grandchildren, Ashley Queensberry, Autumn Queensberry, Lance Claytor, Jessica Rickman and Dillon Mull.
The family will receive friends at the home of Terri Rickman. A memorial service will be held at 11:00 a.m. Thursday in the chapel of Wood Funeral Service. Interment will be private. Condolences may be expressed to the family at www.woodfuneralservice.com.


Mr. Roy M. Blanks
Mr. Roy M. Blanks died Sunday, May 27, 2007. He was born in Providence, VA and graduated from Clover High School. He studied at New York School of Interior Design and graduated from RPI with a degree in Interior Design. He was a US Army veteran and taught at Halifax County High School and worked for the Richmond Chamber of Commerce and was founder of Antiques Warehouse, Richmond and was responsible for the restoration and recreation of Historic Noland Village at Providence.
He is survived by a his friend, Earl Randolph Blankenship, Jr. of Richmond; an aunt and uncle, Louise and Harwood Cochrane of Richmond; brothers, Keister Montgomery Blanks and wife Nan of Providence, Aubrey Nathaniel Blanks and wife Betty of Lynchburg; sister, Dorothy Blanks Allen of Williamsburg; nieces and nephews, great-nieces and nephews, great-great-nieces and nephews, other relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents, Walter Elysec Blanks and Ruby Irby Blanks and a brother, Walter Alvin Blanks (Dick).
Memorial services will be held today at 2:00 p.m. at Historic Halifax Church, Providence with private interment. Memorials may be directed to Historic Noland Village, c/o Nan Blanks, 4241 Mortons Ferry Road, Nathalie, VA 24577.
Eugene Douglas "Doug" Martin
Eugene Douglas "Doug" Martin, 84, cherished husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, brother, farmer and friend, went home to be with God on May 30, 2007, at his home in Turbeville, Virginia. He was born in Halifax County, Virginia on July 18, 1922. He was preceded in death by his parents, Douglas Vincent Martin and Ethel Lou Martin, three brothers, Fred, Jr., Clarence Elmer Martin and Marshall Lee Martin, and sisters Bertha Ma Martin Doran, Ruth Martin Cockman and Loraine Martin Matthews.
As a young man, Doug worked in the shipyards of Norfolk Naval Base, returning home to marry Hilda Barksdale in 1946. Doug ran a 412 acre tobacco, grain and cattle farm in the Calvary community, and he won "Farmer of the Year" in 1962. He was active in the farming community, and was on the Board of Supervisors of Soil and Water Conservation for the community. In 1962, he was awarded the "Outstanding Achievement in Soil and Water Conservation" for his efforts in water irrigation and soil conservation, which he put into practice on his farm. After retiring from farming in 1986, Doug worked as a security supervisor for Southern Processing and Imperial Tobacco Company in Danville, Virginia. He was happy to go to work every day, and in the 20 years he worked as a security supervisor, he was noted for almost perfect attendance. He was awarded several achievement awards for his work with Southern Processing. Doug was a member of New Harvest Assembly of God Church, South Boston, where he was active and served as a deacon for the last 5 years. He was also a former long time member of Cross Roads Baptist Church, Turbeville.
Doug was known to most as avid farmer, and even after his retirement, he continued to "farm" by growing massive amounts of fruits and vegetables, giving most away to family, friends and those in the community. He was most at home with his hands in the soil and loved to share his passion with those he loved and met along his life's journey.
He is survived by wife of 60 years, Hilda Barksdale Martin of the home, daughter, Vickey Martin Shelton, granddaughter, Stephanie Elliott-Park and husband Tony Park, great-grandchild, Zachary Paul Park, sisters: Meria Harris of Scottsburg, Rosalea Lacks of Clover,
Bea Mingo and husband Danny of Seal Beach, California, and sister-in-law, Elizabeth Martin of Halifax.
The family will receive friends at Brooks Funeral Home, Friday night, June 1, 2007 from 6:00 P.M. to 8:00 P.M. and at other times at the home. Celebration of Life Service at Brooks Funeral Home Chapel Saturday, June 2, 2007 11 A.M. with Rev. Russell Irby officiating. Burial will follow in Floral Hills Memory Gardens, Danville
