Mr. Nelson Page Loftis
Mr. Nelson Page Loftis died Sunday,
May 20, 2007 at
Halifax Regional Hospital. Born
December 19, 1909 in
South Boston he was 97 at the time of his death. He was the son of the
late Charles Monroe Loftis and Lucille Sparrow Loftis and was married to
Eula Vance Loftis. He was a member of the South Boston Lions Club for 69
years and was presented with a life membership for distinguished service.
He was also a member of the South Boston Shrine Club and served as Master
of Faulkner Memorial Lodge No. 91 and as a District Deputy Grand Master.
In addition to his Masonic and Shrine connections, he was an organizer and
captain of the local Rescue Squad, a supporter of the Boy Scouts and a
member of the Halifax County Board of Supervisors. He also served an elder
and clerk of the session of Halifax Presbyterian Church where he taught
the young boys Sunday School class for many years. He was also a member of
the Halifax Sportsmen Club and the Halifax County Gun Club and was a
member of the Sons of the American Revolution and an honorary member of
the Huguenot Society.
Mr. Loftis is survived by his wife of the home, a sister, Nancy L. Powell
of Newport News, a stepson, Sanford Vance and wife Peggy of Virginia
Beach, three grandchildren, Brandi Vance of Virginia Beach, MSGT Mike
Vance and wife Patricia of Fort Dix, NJ and Chris Vance and wife Kathy of
Jacksonville, FL, two great grandchildren, Luke Vance of Jacksonville, FL
and Alexander Vance of Fort Dix, NJ. He was preceded in death by his
daughter, Frances Page Loftis. A graveside service with Masonic rites will
be held at Oak Ridge Cemetery on Wednesday,
May 23 at 11 a.m. with
the Rev. Terry Blevins officiating. The family will receive friends at his

Mrs. Mary Elizabeth Wallace
Crabtree
Mrs. Mary Elizabeth Wallace Crabtree of 1014 Greens Folly Road, South
Boston died Friday, May 18,
2007 at her home. Born in Halifax County, she was the daughter of
Willie Prince Wallace and Florence Lacks Wallace. She attended college in
New York State where she resided for a number of years and was a member of
the Business and Professonal Woman's Club and also attended the Kingdom
Hall of Jehovah Witnesses.
Mrs. Crabtree is survived by a daughter, Faye Butler Farmer of South
Boston and three grandchildren, Elizabeth Scott Farmer of Ft. Lauderdale,
FL, Patrick Ray Butler of Randleman, NC and Christopher T. Butler of
Pleasant Garden, NC and three great grandchildren, Blake, Austin and
Lauren Butler of Pleasant Garden, NC. She was preceded in death by a son,
Bobby Ray Butler.
A graveside service will be held Monday,
May 21, 2007 at 4 p.m.
at Oak Ridge cemetery with the Rev. Doug Stacey officiating. The family
will receive friends following the graveside service at her home, 1014
Greens Folly Road, South Boston.
Mrs. Joyce Fears Peade
Mrs. Joyce Fears Peade, 74, of 1904 Norwood Avenue, South Boston died
Thursday, May 17, 2007
at The Woodview. She was born in Halifax County on
January 21, 1933, a
daughter of the late Bennie Lewis Fears and Mamie Coates Fears and was
married to Edward Nathaniel Peade.
In addition to her husband, she is survived by one daughter, Donna P.
Halleck and husband the Rev. Allen Halleck of Chesapeake; four grandsons,
Jordan, Stephen Halleck and wife Elizabeth, Paul Halleck and Mark Halleck;
two sisters, Ollie Mayhew of Lynchburg and Elizabeth Bomar of Brookneal;
one brother, Carlton Fears of Lynchburg, other relatives and friends.
Funeral services were held Saturday at Centerville Baptist Church with
Rev. Richard Saunders and Rev. Dr. John Godfrey officiating. Burial
followed in Oak Ridge Cemetery. Memorials may be directed to the Halifax

Mr. Richard Norwood Goodwin
Mr. Richard Norwood Goodwin, Jr., 88, of 2190 East Hyco Road, South Boston
died Wednesday, May 16, 2007
at Halifax Regional Hospital. He was born in Troy, VA on
July 22, 1918, a son
of the late Richard Norwood Goodwin, Sr. and Ruth Farrar Goodwin and was
married to Primrose Cole Goodwin. He was a member of Shady Grove United
Methodist Church.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by two sisters, Shirley G. Hasher
and Betty Goodwin, both of Troy; one brother, Elmer "Tooter" Goodwin of
Troy, other relatives and friends.
Funeral services were held Saturday at 11:00 a.m. at Shady Grove United
Methodist Church with Rev. Ray McCarr officiating. Burial followed in
Shady Grove UMC Cemetery. Memorials may be directed to Shady Grove United

David Russell Turner
DANVILLE — David Russell Turner, 68, of 292 Glenlyn Street, died Saturday,
May 19, 2007 at his
home. Born January 7, 1939
in Danville, he was the son of the late Charlie Richard Turner and the
late Zona Ozella Meeks Turner. He worked as an electrician for the U.S.
government at Ft. Jackson, SC and served two years in the US Navy.
He is survived by two daughters, Leslie Turner of Rural Hall and Kelly
Turner of California; three brothers, Richard Alvin Turner of Raleigh, NC,
Henry Charles Turner and Billy Ray Turner, both of Leasburg, NC, six
sisters, Bonnie T. Ferrell of Vernon Hill, Patsy Ann Turner and ,of
Pfafftown, NC, Lisa Lyn T. Myers of Thomasville, NC, Rene T. Davis and
Tracie T.Horner, Donna M. Turner all of Roxboro, NC and five
grandchildren. In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by a sister,
Nellie T. Glancey. Barker Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
