OBITUARIES

 

 Glenn Clay
Mr. Glenn Clay, 38, of 1144 Woods Creek Lane, Scottsburg died Monday,
May 12, 2008 at Halifax Regional Hospital.  He was born October 14,
1969, a son of the late Bonnie Clay McKinney and was married to Janet
Clay.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by five stepchildren, Dwight,
Desiree and Dexter Clay, all of Virginia, Devin Snead and wife Christie
of Halifax, Shawn Snead and fiancé Kayla of Dryburg; his mother, Patty
Clay of South Boston; three brothers, Len Clay of Alton, George
McKinney and wife Kathy of Cluster Springs, Addie McKinney and wife
Debra of South Boston; one sister, Patty Luke of Williamsburg; two
step-grandchildren, Allie Powell and Christopher Beadles; other
relatives and friends.
Graveside services will be held Saturday, May 17 at 11:00 a.m. at
Lebanon Methodist Church Cemetery in Drakes Branch with Rev. Bruce Hagy
officiating.  The family will receive friends Friday from 7:00-8:30
p.m. at Powell Funeral Home and at other times at his home, 1144 Woods
Creek Lane, Scottsburg.

 

 Rose Elizabeth Landrum Owen
Mrs. Rose Elizabeth Landrum Owen, 86, of Vernon Hill died Monday, May
12, 2008 at Halifax Regional Hospital.  She was born August 13, 1921 in
Paces, a daughter of the late James Oscar Landrum and Rose Ester Dunn
Landrum.  She was married to the late John Woodrow Owen and was a
member of Mt. Vernon Baptist Church.
She is survived by one daughter, Rose Lee Simerson and husband Dan of
Salisbury, NC; one son, David Allen Owen and wife Carol of Lynchburg;
one granddaughter, Katherine Leigh Owen.  She was preceded in death by
one son, Oscar Stuart Owen, one sister, Elsie Kathleen Cole and one
brother, James Clarence Landrum.
Graveside services will be held Friday, May 16 at 2:00 p.m. at Mt.
Vernon Baptist Church Cemetery with Rev. Bill Wilkins conducting the
service.  The family will receive friends tonight from 7:00-8:30 p.m.
at Powell Funeral Home.  Memorials may be directed to the American
Heart Association, 4217 Park Place Court, Glen Allen, VA 23060.

 

 Richard Owen Traynham
Mr. Richard Owen Traynham, 91, of 2032 Traynham Grove Road, Alton died
Sunday, May 11, 2008 at The Woodview.  He was born in Halifax County on
April 27, 1917, a son of the late Mr. Richard Traynham and Mrs.
Elizabeth Street Traynham.  He was married to the late Mrs. Mattie Reed
Traynham and was a member of Harmony A.M.E. Church.
He is survived by one daughter, Mrs. Essie Thomas of Alton; two sons,
Mr. Aaron Traynham of Randallstown, MD and Mr. Ivory Traynham of
Baltimore, MD; 13 grandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren, three
daughters-in-law, other relatives and friends.  He was preceded in
death by one son, Mr. David Traynham.
Funeral services will be held Friday, May 16 at 2:00 p.m. at Harmony
A.M.E. Church with Rev. Michael Dunn officiating.  Burial will follow
in Oak Ridge Cemetery.  The family will receive friends tonight from
6:00-7:00 p.m. at Jeffress Funeral Home.

 

 John Pershing Loftis
Mr. John Pershing Loftis of Richmond, formerly of South Boston, died
May 7, 2008.  He was born October 28, 1918, a son of the late O.D. and
Allie Arrington Loftis and was married to Virginia Brown Loftis.  He
was a member of Skipwith United Methodist Church, Richmond and was a
World War II veteran.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by two daughters, Anita L. and
Chris Dickens of Richmond, Gail L. and David Evans of New Jersey; seven
grandchildren, numerous nieces and nephews; three sisters, Inez Green
and Edith Burton, both of South Boston and Lottie Hutchins of Richmond.
  He was preceded in death by four brothers, Howard C., William H.,
Francis J., Douglas E. Loftis and two sisters, Modell L. Garnett and
Mabel L. Morningstar.
Graveside services were held at Greenwood Memorial Gardens at noon on
Saturday, May 10.

 

 Lettie Short Conner
Mrs. Lettie Short Conner of 5041 James D. Hagood Highway, Scottsburg
died Monday, May 12, 2008 at Halifax Regional Hospital.  She was born
February 25, 1937, a daughter of the late Lundy Stevenson Short and
Lena Fuller Short.  She was married to Edward Aldine Conner and was a
member of Bethel Baptist Church.
In addition to her husband, she is survived by three sons, Carson
Conner and wife Rebecca of Millersville, MD, Michael Conner and wife
Jill of South Boston and Robin Conner of Scottsburg; one daughter,
Susan Wray Conner of Scottsburg; four sisters, Elna Burton of Halifax,
Frances Glass of South Boston, Elaine Hamlette of Charlotte Court House
and Joan Waller of Halifax; one brother, Al David Short of Greenville,
SC; three grandchildren, Karen Clay, Nicholas Conner, Dale Conner; one
great-grandchild, Brian Clay.  She was preceded in death by three
brothers, Robert Lee, C.W. and James Short and one sister, Dot
Barksdale.
Funeral services will be held Friday, May 16 at 3:00 p.m. at Bethel
Baptist Church with Rev. Frank Fuller officiating.  Burial will follow
in the church cemetery.  The family will receive friends tonight from
7:00-8:30 p.m. at Powell Funeral Home.
 Lester Watkins Waller
Mr. Lester Watkins Waller, 65, of 1036 Dan River Church Road, South
Boston died Wednesday, May 14, 2008 at Halifax Regional Hospital.  He
was born in Halifax County on February 1, 1943, a son of Minnie Dalton
Waller and the late Willard W. Waller.  He was of the Baptist faith.
In addition to his mother, he is survived by one brother, Kenneth B.
Waller and wife Hilda of Nathalie; one sister, Thelma June Vaughan of
South Boston; special aunt, Bernice Thompson and husband Charlie of
South Boston; three children; a brother-in-law, Coy Terry of Halifax;
special niece, Bonnie Terry Childrey and husband Jimmy of Halifax;
other relatives and friends.  He was preceded in death by a sister,
Merle W. Terry.
Graveside services will be held Friday, May 16 at 1:00 p.m. at Mulberry
Baptist Church Cemetery with Rev. Coy Terry officiating.  The family
will receive friends tonight from 7:00-8:30 p.m. at Powell Funeral
Home.  Memorials may be directed to the Halifax County Humane Society,

 Aubrey Walter Penick
Mr. Aubrey Walter Penick, 53, of 1100 Bagwell Drive, Scottsburg died
Tuesday, May 13, 2008 at Halifax Regional Hospital.  He was born in
Halifax County on January 5, 1955, a son of the late Mr. General Grant
Penick, Sr. and Mrs. Frances Acree Penick.  He was married to Mrs.
Paula Rhodes Penick and was a member of Traynham Grove Baptist Church.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by two daughters, Ms. Lisa
Penick of Yanceyville, NC and Ms. Samantha Penick of Scottsburg; five
sons, Mr. Shamel Coppage of Virginia Beach, Mr. Christopher Penick of
Roxboro, NC, Mr. Aubrey Jordan and Mr. Christopher Rhodes, both of
Nathalie, Mr. Spencer Patrick of Scottsburg; seven grandchildren, two
sisters, Mrs. Christine Thomas of Halifax and Mrs. Vernell P. Davis of
South Boston; two brothers, Mr. General Grant Penick, Jr. and Mr.
Ledges Lee Penick, both of Halifax; his mother-in-law, Mrs. Frances
Rhodes of Phenix; three sisters-in-law, Mrs. Rosa Penick, Mrs. Althea
Penick, Mrs. Belinda Penick; two uncles, three aunts, other relatives
and friends.  He was preceded in death by one brother, Mr. Leonard F.
Penick.
Funeral services will be held Friday, May 16 at 11:00 a.m. at Traynham
Grove Baptist Church with Rev. Dr. William A. Keen officiating.

 Ernest Dunkley
Mr. Ernest Dunkley of 1622 Buchanan Street, Lynchburg, formerly of
Halifax County, died Monday, May 12, 2008 at Lynchburg General Hospital
at the age of 50. Born in Halifax County on January 4, 1958 to the late
Ms. Mary Walton Latta, he was the adopted son of the late Mr. Archie
Glen Dunkley and Mrs. Louise McCutchen Dunkley. He was married to Mrs.
Georgie King Dunkley and was an Army veteran.
Mr. Dunkley is survived by his wife, three daughters, Ms. Kasheka
Duncan of Alexandria, Mrs. Latoya D. Scott and Ms. Tichina L. Dunkley,
bot of Lynchburg, a son, Mr. Dominick B. Dunkley of Lynchburg, five
brothers, Mr. Erl Lee Thaxton of Alecandria, Mr. McKinley Walton of
Orange County, Mr. Larry Walton of Dunfries and Mr. Waddell Latta of
Hillsborough, NC, three sisters, Mrs. Roseland Ragland of Bridgeport,
CT, Mrs. Hattie Chappell and Mrs. Clarissa Jones, both of Alexandria,
three grandchildren, five sisters-in-law, five brothers-in-law, five
aunts, six uncles and a host of cousins, nieces, nephews, other
relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by two brothers, Mr.
Nathaniel Dunkley and Mr. Nathan Walton.
A memorial and visitation service will be Sunday, May 18 at 2 p.m. at
the Crawford House Chapel in Halifax. Public viewing for family and
friends will be at Jeffress  Funeral Home Chapel in South Boston on
Saturday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.

 

 Joseph Alexander Jones
Mr. Joseph Alexander Jones of Norfolk, formerly of Halifax, died in
Norfolk at the age of 46. Born in Halifax County on March 23, 1962, he
was the son of Mrs. Fannie Lee Coles Jones and the late Mr. Charlie Mac
Jones, Sr. He was a member of Pleasant Grove Baptist Church and was a
United States Navy veteran.
Mr. Jones is survived by his mother, Mrs. Fannie Coles Jones of
Halifax, five sisters, Mrs. Lottie Coles of Clinton, MD, Mrs. Marie
Jones-Bowman of Randolph, Mrs. Karen Clark of Norfolk, Mrs. Olivia
Ferrell of Danville and Mrs. Stephanie Terry of Norfolk, three
brothers, Mr. James A. Jones, Sr. of Nathalie, Mr. Charlie Jones, Jr.
and Mr. Larry G. Jones, both of Clover, six brothers-in-law, two
sisters-in-law, three aunts, one uncle, his god brother, Mr. Joseph
Jones and a god sister, Mrs. Lou Willie Bullock and a host of nieces,
nephews, other relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by a
sister, Mrs. Joan E. Davis and one brother, Mr. Cornell V. Jones.
A funeral service for Mr. Jones will be held Saturday, May 17, 2008 at
11 a.m. at Pleasant Grove Baptist Church in Nathalie with the Rev.
Ronald Claiborne officiating. Burial will follow in the church
cemetery. The family is receiving friends at the home of Mrs. Fannie C.
Jones, 4047 Abbott Hill Road, Halifax.
