William Douglas (Bill) Dickey
William Douglas (Bill) Dickey passed peacefully Saturday, May 12,
2007.
Bill was born in Pell City, Alabama on July 5, 1927 to John
Douglas
Dickey and Bertie Neal Dickey. The family moved to South Boston at
the
age of three where he spent the rest of his life. Bill took an
early
interest in sports and it became a passion for his entire life. He
served his country in the U.S. Navy, entering at the end of World
War
II. In the 1960's and 1970's he was a central figure in the lives
of
many young boys in the community. He was an umpire, coach, and
league
president in the baseball, basketball and football leagues,
spending
countless hours organizing and supporting these activities and the
kids
involved. In that endeavor to teach kids the rules of the games,
he
left his impression of a strong work ethic, good sportsmanship and
a
sense of fairness on each of them.In vocation, Bill was always the
consummate salesman and manager, working with The Jewel Box, The South
Boston News and Record Advertiser, The Halifax Country Club and
Clarksville's Kinderton
Country Club. In his semi-retirement, he owned and operated a
small
country store, Dickey's Self Service. For those who remember him
in his
role as Advertising Manager with the News and Record, they
remember
Bill in his true element, walking the streets of South Boston,
greeting
store owners and helping them promote their businesses. Bill truly
never met a stranger. No husband, father, grandfather or great
grandfather has been any more loving and supporting than Bill. He was
always there for his family, encouraging them to be successful and
happy, and promoting them
constantly. He was preceded in death by his parents, John and
Bertie Dickey, his sister, Mary Ruth Dickey Kaczmar and his daughter,
Deborah Sharp
Dickey. He is survived by his wife, Lucille Palmer Dickey, his son,

Dickey of
Charlotte, NC, a grandson, Michael Sharp, a great granddaughter
