OBITUARIES Leonore Vogel Anderson
Mrs. Leonore Vogel Anderson of 1025 Harris Drive, Apt. 205, South
Boston died Thursday, May 8, 2008 at Halifax Regional Hospital. Born
in
Marktwertz, Germany on June 17, 1948, she was 59 at the time of her
death. She was a seamstress with Crown Craft.
Mrs. Anderson is survived by her husband, Wayne Anderson of South
Boston and by two sons, Peter Anderson and wife Karen of South
Boston
and Thomas Vogel of Germany, two daughters, Karen Anderson Walker
and
husband Dick of Halifax and Andrea Lay of Germany. Also surviving
are
a sister, Karin V. Silence of Stedman, NC and three brothers, Robert
T.
Vogel of Albuquerque, NM, Albert G. Vogel, Jr. and Donald Vogel,
both
of Washington. She was preceded in death by her parents, Albert G.
Vogel and Erika Adams Vogel and two grandchildren.
A memorial service for Mrs. Anderson will be conducted on Wednesday,
May 14 at 1 p.m. at Brooks Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Jack

Vivian Hortense Watts Grosch
Mrs. Vivian Hortense Watts Grosch of South Boston died Wednesday,
May
7, 2008 at Boston Commons. Born in Mayo on October 21, 1915, she was
92
at the time of her death. She was a member of Shady Grove United
Methodist Church.
Mrs. Grosch is survived by a son, William Neil Grosch of Albany, NY
and
a daughter, Virginia Ann Kowalski of Huntington NY, three
grandchildren
and one great grandchild. Also surviving is a brother, Lawrence
Watts
of Cluster Springs. She was preceded in death by her husband,
William
Anson Grosch and her parents, James and Nancy Ford Watts and three
brothers, Easley, Billy and James Watts and a sister, Lottie Pool.
A funeral service for Mrs. Grosch will be conducted on Monday, May
12
at 2 p.m. at Shady Grove Methodist Church with the Rev. Jeaux
Simmons
officiating. Burial will follow in the Shady Grove UMC Cemetery. The
family requests that in lieu of flowers, memorials be made to Shady

Ellen Todd Eakes
Mrs. Ellen Todd Eakes, 83, of 1014 Grove Avenue, South Boston died
Tuesday, May 6, 2008 at Duke University Hospital. She was born
April
6, 1925 in Roxboro, NC, daughter of the late Nehemiah Todd and Nora
Wingate Todd and was married to the late Olan Day Eakes. She was a
member of First Baptist Church where she was a deaconess, Sunday
school
teacher and on numerous committees.
She is survived by two sons, Harvey Leonard Eakes and wife Pamela
and
Gordan Olan Eakes, all of South Boston; five grandchildren, Sarah
Jennings Eakes, Todd Wingate Eakes, Bridgett Elizabeth Eakes, Laura
Ashley Eakes, Anne Harvey Eakes; three sisters, Carrie Gentry and
Ann
Pool, both of Roxboro, NC and Geneva Robertson and husband Rev.
Tommy
Robertson of Oxford, NC. She was preceded in death by one son,
Wingate
Currin Eakes.
Funeral services were held Saturday, May 10 at First Baptist Church
with Rev. Dr. William Pyle, Rev. Tommy Robertson and Rev. Dr. Tim
Cannon officiating. Burial followed in Oak Ridge
Cemetery. Memorials

Danny Lee Newcomb
Mr. Danny Lee Newcomb, 56, of 952 C&N Smith Mill Road, Madison, NC
died
on Thursday, May 8, 2008 at Moses Cone Memorial Hospital.
Funeral services were held at 2:00 p.m. Sunday at the Chapel of Ray
Funeral Home with Reverend Dwayne Lester officiating. Interment
followed in the Stoneville City Cemetery.
Mr. Newcomb was born on October 12, 1951 in Clover, VA. He was an
employee of Kobe Wieland Copper Products and was the owner and
operator
of D&F Steam Cleaning.
He was preceded in death by his father, John Poker Newcomb; brother,
Ray Newcomb; a sister; grandchild, Hannah Lawson; and great
grandchild,
Hunter Lawson.
He is survived by his wife, Frances Allison Newcomb; mother,
Florence
Tuck Newcomb; children, Iris Walters and husband Allen of Roxboro,
NC,
Dee Dee Amburn and husband Ronnie of Eden, NC, Angela Nelson and
husband Billy of Ruffin, NC, Kathy Presnell of Stoneville, NC and
Danny
Presnell and wife Melinda of Stoneville, NC; sister, Brenda Dunaway
and
husband Mack of Plantersville, VA; brother, Jason Newcomb and wife
Wendi of Drakes Branch, VA; 10 grandchildren, Kimberly Amburn,
Ronnie
Amburn Jr., Casey Hazelwood, Amber Nelson, Billy Nelson Jr.,
Jonathon
Lawson, Danny Presnell Jr., Destiny Moorefield, Travis Moorefield,
and
Stacey Welch; and six great grandchildren.
Donald Ray "Donnie" Powell
Mr. Donald Ray "Donnie" Powell of 3057 North Terry's Bridge Road,
Halifax died Wednesday, May 7, 2008 at his home. Born in Halifax
County
on October 10, 1953, he was 54 at the time of his death. He was the
son
of the late Luther J. Powell and Martha Hackney Powell, who
survives.
He was a member of the Dan River Baptist Church.
Mr. Powell is survived by his mother, two sisters, Peggy Powell of
Halifax and Patsy P. Weaver of Bethesda, MD, two brothers, Glenn
Powell
of Halifax and James E. Powell of South Boston, two nieces and three
nephews. He was preceded in death by a brother, Mack Powell.
A funeral service for Mr. Powell was conducted on Saturday, May 10
at 2
p.m. at Powell Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Bob Watts
officiating.
Burial followed in the Dan River Church cemetery. For memorials,

consider the Scottsburg Volunteer Fire Department.
