Obituaries
Ryan Andrew Asbell, 17, of the 1000 block of Head of River
Road, a special angel, was called home by his Lord on Sunday,
April
29, 2007, at the Children's Hospital of the King's Daughters, due
to a
brain bleed.
Ryan was born October 19, 1989, in Danville, VA, to Anita Stevens
Asbell and Kenneth Andrew Asbell, Jr. Ryan was a junior at Hickory
High
and a member of Great Bridge Baptist Church. He loved his family,
friends, laughter, rock music and movies.
Left to cherish his memory are his parents and his brother Alex of
the
home. He is also survived by his Auntie Phyllis Dalton of Durham,
NC,
his Uncle Allen and Aunt Sherry Stevens, South Boston, his Uncle
Joe
and Aunt Linda Asbell, Suffolk, and his cousins Ashley Stevens,
Andy
Asbell, Chris Asbell, Holly Reese, and Nicky Davis. Always special
to
Ryan was Mary Ann Cash, South Boston. He also leaves a multitude
of
other family members and friends.
Ryan was preceded in death by his grandparents, Kenneth and Pansy
Asbell, and Josephine and Wistar Stevens.
A celebration of Ryan's life was held at 3 p.m. Wednesday, May 2,
2007
at Great Bridge Baptist Church with the Rev. Charles Moseley and
the
Rev. Richard Castleberry. The interment will be private at Holly
Lawn
Cemetery, Suffolk.

Thomas Earl Covington, 85, of 439 Crescent Drive, South Boston
died
Sunday, April 29, 2007 at Halifax Regional Hospital. He was born
in
Halifax County on November 19, 1921, a son of the late John T.
Covington and Maude Cooke Covington. He was a Corporal in the US
Army
serving with Bat-C 474th Anti Aircraft Artillery Battalion. He was
a
squad leader in Normandy, Northern France and Central Europe. His
decorations and citations include Good Conduct Medal, American
Theater
Service Ribbon, European-African Service Ribbon-Bronze Arrowhead,
and
WWII Victory Ribbon.
He is survived by two sisters, Polly Bradley and Darlene Osborne,
both
South Boston.
Graveside services were held Tuesday, May 1 at Providence
Presbyterian
Church Cemetery. Memorials may be directed to the Providence
Presbyterian Church Memorial Fund.
Mrs. Marie Lane Jones, 96, of 1080 Alphonse Dairy Road, South
Boston
died Saturday, April 28, 2007 at The Woodview. She was born in
Halifax
County on December 19, 1910, a daughter of the late Mrs. Susie
Watkins
King and was married to the late Mr. Harvey Jones. She was a
member of
Dan River View Missionary Baptist Church.
She is survived by one son, Bishop Morris R. Lane of Richmond;
four
grandchildren, Ms. Belinda M. Lane, Mrs. Zelda D. Hampton, Mrs.
Diana
P. Belton and Mr. M. Donnal Lane; seven great-grandchildren, seven
great-great-grandchildren; one daughter-in-law, Mrs. Lorraine
Lane;
friends, Rev. Larry Green, Mrs. Sarah Green and church family;
other
relatives and friends. She was preceded in death by four sisters
and
three brothers.
Funeral services will be held today at 11:00 a.m. at Dan River
View
Missionary Baptist Church with Rev. Larry Green officiating. The
family
will receive friends at the church today.
Mr. Giles Edwin "Jolly" Jones, Jr., 35, of 1090 Ashcroft Place,
South
Boston died Friday, April 27, 2007. He was born in Halifax County
on
February 12, 1972, a son of Giles E. Jones, Sr. and Brenda Powell
Jones
and was married to Cathy Farrar Jones. He was a member of Grace
Baptist Church and was an employee of Progress Energy.
In addition to his parents and wife, he is survived by his
children,
Lainey, Layne, Christian and Jordan; his grandfather, Andrew
Vaughan of
Scottsburg; sisters, Suzanne Jones and Wendy Jones, both of Vernon
Hill, Lisa Moore of Scottsburg and Rhonda Moore of Roxboro, NC;
other
relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by his
grandparents,
Elise P. Vaughan, J. Howard Jones and Sylvia S. Jones.
Funeral services will be held today at 11:00 a.m. at Grace Baptist
Church with Rev. Jack Stewart and Rev. Dave Cline officiating.
Burial
will follow in the church cemetery. Memorials may be directed to

Mrs. Joy Brogden Butler, 52, of 1187 Sandy Beach Road, South
Boston
died Tuesday, May 1, 2007 at Halifax Regional Hospital. She was
born
in Halifax County on February 7, 1955, a daughter of Ophelia W.
Brogden
and the late Harold Brogden and was married to Raymond D. Butler.
She
was a member of Dan River Baptist Church and Women of Hope and was
an
employee of Dollar General.
In addition to her mother and husband, she is survived by one
daughter,
Karen L. Butler-Dixon and husband Michael of South Boston; two
sons,
Ray Allen Butler of US Army, Iraq and Nicholas B. Butler of South
Boston; one brother, Ricky Brogden and wife Sharon of South
Boston;
mother-in-law, Virginia Francis Butler of Halifax; nieces and
nephews,
Shane, Elizabeth and Sarah Brogden.
Funeral arrangements will be announced at a later date.
Mrs. Katherine Kay Cope of Springmoor Retirement Community,
Raleigh, NC
died April 29, 2007. Her husband, Ralph Cope, predeceased her in
1981.
Mrs. Cope was born August 28, 1909 in Shamokin, PA. She was a 1958
Meredith College graduate and then taught for 12 years at Swift
Creek
Elementary School. She was a member of Community United Church,
was a
Wake County United Nations Association member. In 1991, she was
presented the Dag Hammarskjold Award for her service.
Surviving are a son, Kenneth Cope and wife, Billie, of
Clarksville; a
daughter, Carol Edwards of Raleigh, NC; five grandchildren,
Elizabeth
Cope and husband, David Conner of Turbeville, Kenneth and wife,
Jessie
Cope of Rockville, MD, Michael and Angela Cope of Clarksville,
Alecia
Gamble and husband, Carl Johnson, of Apex, NC and Charles Gamble
of
Raleigh, NC; and eight great-grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held May 6, at 12:30 p.m. at Community
United Church, 814 Dixie Trail, Raleigh, NC 27607. Those wishing
to
give memorials are asked to consider the church.
Lillian Harris of Philadelphia, PA died April 26, 2007. Services
were
held Wednesday at Greater Ebenezer Baptist Church with burial in
Chelten Hills Cemetery.
Mr. Lewis Alvin Crews, 63, of Virginia Lane, Clover died Monday,
April
30, 2007 at his home. He was born in Halifax County on July 22,
1943,
a son of the late Mr. William Henry Crews and Mrs. Virginia
Watkins
Crews. He was married to Mrs. Rosa Lee Campbell Crews and was a
member
of Zion Grove Baptist Church. He resided in Yonkers, NY for many
years
upon retirement.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by two sons, Mr. Louis
Alvin
Crews, Jr. of White Plains, NY and Mr. James Crews of Clover; five
sisters, Mrs. Louise Dismuke and Mrs. Martha Blair, both of
Clover, Ms.
Joyce Crews of Baltimore, MD, Ms. Velma Crews of Shrub Oak, NY and
Mrs.
Jean Green of South Boston; three brothers, Mr. Melvin Crews of
Yonkers, NY, Mr. George Crews and Mr. Lenox Crews, both of Clover;
five
grandchildren, two daughters-in-law, Mrs. Theresa Crews and Mrs.
Pamela
Crews; his mother-in-law, Mrs. Margaret Pearson; seven
sisters-in-law,
two brothers-in-law, other relatives and friends. He was preceded
in
death by one sister, Mrs. Carrie Dismuke and two brothers, Mr.
Kenneth
Crews and Mr. John Crews.
Funeral services will be held Saturday, May 5 at 2:00 p.m. at Zion
Grove Baptist Church with Rev. Jefferson Goode officiating. Burial
will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive
friends at
the home, 1028 Virginia Lane, Clover.
Mr. Seth Alan Daniel, 28, of 9051 Morton's Ferry Road, Clover died
Tuesday, May 1, 2007 in Clover. He was born January 9, 1979, a son
of
William Dennis Daniel and Rebecca Roller Heath and was married to
Elsie
Lynn Powell Daniel.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by his father and
step-mother,
William Dennis Daniel and Annie of Alton and mother, Rebecca
Roller
Heath of Clover; two sisters, Mary Ellen Daniel and fiancй Gregory
Lane
Hudson of Clover, Robin Ragsdale and husband Dalton of
Winston-Salem,
NC; one brother, William Tracy Daniel and wife Melissa of
Lexington,
NC; nephews, Joshua Dylan Daniel and Wyatt Lane Hudson, four other
nieces and nephews and his grandmother, Josephine Ella Blanks of
Cluster Springs.
Funeral services will be held Friday, May 4 at 2:00 p.m. at Powell
Funeral Home with Rev. Jack Stewart officiating. Burial will
follow in
the Powell Family Cemetery at the Cove in Clover. The family will
receive friends tonight from 7:00-8:30 p.m. at Powell Funeral
Home.
