OBITUARIES James David "Jimmy" Epps, Jr
Mr. James David "Jimmy" Epps, Jr. of 3060 Dan River Road, South
Boston died Sunday, April 27, 2008 at his home. Born November 8,
1913, in Halifax County, he was 94 at the time of his death. He was
the son of
the late James David Epps, Sr. and Melissa New Epps and was married
to Ophelia Lenora Wilmouth Epps. He was a member of the Dan River
Baptist Church, was an avid golfer and was a member and 1995
inductee into the
South Boston-Halifax County Sports Hall of Fame. He was a retired
sales manager with Blue Ribbon Creamery.
Mr. Epps is survived by two daughters, Norma E. Chaney and husband
Bob of South Boston and Scottie E. Felton of Halifax and one son,
James David Epps, III and wife Mary Jane of Halifax one stepson,
Henry Cole
and wife Clevie of Scottsburg, five grandchildren, three step
grandchildren, eight great grandchildren and six step great
grandchildren. A funeral service will be conducted on Wednesday,
April 30 at 3 p.m. at the Dan River Baptist Church with the Rev. Rod
Chaney and the Rev. Doug Gibson officiating. Burial will follow in
the church cemetery. The family will receive friends at Powell
Funeral Home on Tuesday from 7 until 8:30 p.m. and at other times at

Gracie K. Wilborn
Mrs. Gracie K. Wilborn, 92, of 610 Linden Place, South Boston died
Friday, April 25, 2008 at The Woodview. Born in Halifax County on
February 9, 1916, she was a member of the South Boston Church of God
and was a retiree of J. P. Stevens. Mrs. Wilborn is survived by two
daughters Ruby L. Newton of Halifax and
Faye L. Eanes of South Boston and a son, Mack Laughorn and wife,
Linda of Scottsburg. ten grandchildren, 17 great grandchildren and a
brother, Earl King of High Point, NC. She was preceded in death by
her husband,
Walter R. "Curly" Wilborn, her parents, Alex and Lottie Hancock
King, a son, Thomas B. Laughorn and a grandson. Tyler Blake Laughorn,
and a number of brothers and sisters. A graveside service for Mrs.
Wilborn was conducted on Sunday, April 27 at 2 p.m. at Oak Ridge
Cemetery with the Rev. Dr. Bruce Hagy officiating. On-line

Katie Wells Singleton Gravitt
Mrs. Katie Wells Singleton Gravitt of South Boston died Sunday,
April 27, 2008 at The Woodview. Born September 9, 1915 in Halifax
County she was 92 at the time of her death. She was the daughter of
the late
William Cornelius Singleton and Ella Lou Francisco Singleton and was
married to the late James William Gravitt. She was a member of the
Dan River Baptist Church and was a former employee of Burlington
Industries, having retired in 1977. Mrs. Gravitt is survived by two
sons, John Page Gravitt and wife Eloise and Elmer Mitchell Gravitt
and wife Constance, all of South Boston, six grandchildren, five
great grandchildren, six great great grandchildren,
extended family members and friends. She was preceded in death by
one son, Francis Burnell Gravitt, three brothers and five sisters. A
graveside service will be conducted at Oak Ridge Cemetery on
Tuesday, April 29 at 11 a.m. with the Rev. Doug Gibson officiating.
The family will receive friends at the cemetery one hour prior to
the service and
at other times at the homes of her two sons. For memorials, please

Henry Thomas Epperson
Mr. Henry Thomas Epperson, 82, of 5192 Mt. Laurel Road, Clover died
Wednesday, April 23, 2008 at Halifax Regional Hospital. He was born
in Halifax County on December 30, 1925, a son of the late Mr. John
Wilson
Epperson and Mrs. Maggie Penick Epperson. He was married to the
late Mrs. Lou Ellen Wilborne Epperson and was a member of Bethel
Grove Baptist Church and a World War II Navy Veteran. He is survived
by one daughter, Mrs. Virginia Epperson Wilkins of Clover; two sons,
Mr. Fred Wilborne and Mr. Lavell Epperson, both of
Clover; six grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren, two
daughters-in-law, Mrs. Queen Mary Wilborne and Mrs. Loretta
Epperson, both of Clover; two sisters-in-law, two brothers-in-law
and other relatives and friends.
Funeral services were held Sunday, April 27 at Bethel Grove Baptist
Church with Rev. William Hicks officiating. Burial followed in the
church cemetery with Military Rites.
Lottie Wilborn Kinder Vaughan
Mrs. Lottie Wilborn Kinder Vaughan, 300 Hamilton Blvd., South
Boston, died Wednesday, April 23, 2008 at Halifax Regional
Hospital. She was born in Halifax County on April 18, 1934, a
daughter of the late Rev.
James R. Wilborn and Maggie Thomas Wilborn and was married first to
Archie W. Kinder then to the late Dennis Vaughan. She was of the
Holiness faith. She is survived by one daughter, Deborah Guthrie and
husband Donald of
South Boston; two sons, Michael W. Kinder and wife Debbie of Mt.
Pleasant, SC and Timothy Allen "Timmy" Kinder and wife Denise of
McClellanville, SC; two sisters, Ida W. Trickey and Geraldine W.
Redd, both of South Boston; grandchildren, Brian Clark, Kenneth
Clark, Dwayne Kinder and wife Susan, Cindy Landrum and husband
Robert, Zac Kinder, Scott Kinder, Eddie Watson; great-grandchildren,
Hannah Schweitzer, Ryan Kinder, Tyler Kinder, Kristin Landrum,
Robert Landrum; special friend, Herbert Glasscock. She was preceded
in death by three
brothers, Floyd L. Wilborn, Paul E. "Red" Wilborn and Richard E.
Wilborn. Graveside services were held Friday, April 25 at Oak Ridge
Cemetery with Rev. Daniel Thomas officiating. Memorials may be

James Wallace "Mike" Cassada
Mr. James Wallace "Mike" Cassada, 83, of 2044 Sinai Road, South
Boston died Thursday, April 24, 2008 at his home. He was born in
Halifax County on April 5, 1925, a son of the late Charlie D.
Cassada and Virginia Wilborn Cassada and was married to Lois Chesson
Cassada. He was a member of Dan River Baptist Church where he
served as a deacon, choir member and trustee and was a retired
farmer and automobile salesman. In addition to his wife, he is
survived by two daughters, Carolyn C. Glass and husband Marshall of
South Boston, Beverly C. Hughes and husband Andy of Nathalie; one
son, Steve Cassada and wife Vicky of South Boston; two sisters,
Lucille Cassada and Kathleen C. Johnson, both of South Boston; one
brother, C.D. Cassada of Halifax; six
grandchildren, Angela Kelly, Hollie Short, Lauren Fears, A.J.
Cassada, Brandon Hughes, Shelley Hughes; three grandchildren,
Caitlin Armitage, Christian Armitage and Joseph Cassada. Memorial
services were held Saturday, April 26 at Dan River Baptist Church
with Rev. Doug Gibson officiating. Memorials may be directed to
