OBITUARIES
Mr. Allen Rudolph Adkins, Jr., 44, of Nathalie died Saturday, April
19,
2008 at Halifax Regional Hospital. He was born in Halifax County on
April 8, 1964, a son of Allen Rudolph Adkins, Sr. and Eunice Tuggle
Adkins. He was a member of First Baptist Church of Republican Grove
and French Masonic Lodge and was the shipping supervisor at J.M.
Huber
Corporation.
In addition to his parents, he is survived by a son, Justin Allen
Adkins of Nathalie; one sister, Tammy Adkins Powell and husband
Lewis
of South Boston; three brothers, Michael Thomas Hines and wife Kim
and
Gladys, Charles Phillip Hines and wife Evelyn of Nathalie and
Anthony
Lee Hines and companion Tammy Beadles of Nathalie; and a number of
nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were held Tuesday, April 22 at First Baptist Church
of
Republican Grove with Rev. Shelton Miles officiating. Burial
followed
in the church cemetery.
Mrs. Iola Garrett Collins, 88, of Clover died April 19, 2008 at
Halifax
Regional Hospital. She was born in Halifax County on December 20,
1919, a daughter of the late Mr. Julius Williams Garrett, Sr. and
Mrs.
Mary Ella Palmer Garrett. She was married to the late Mr. George
Langston Collins, Sr. and was a member of Ellis Creek Missionary
Baptist Church.
She is survived by three daughters, Mrs. Mamie Foster of Randolph,
Mrs.
Annie Traynham of Nathalie, Mrs. Mattie Owen of South Boston; one
brother, Mr. Lilton Garrett of South Boston; two sisters, Ms. Agnes
Coleman of New York and Ms. Alice Farmer of New Jersey; four
grandchildren, five great-grandchildren; four sons-in-law, Mr. James
Foster, Mr. Joseph Traynham, Mr. Bret Owen and Mr. Eugene Coleman;
eight sisters-in-law, one brother-in-law, devoted friends Mrs.
Yvonne
Carter and Mr. William Hailey; other relatives and friends. She was
preceded in death by one daughter, Mrs. Joyce Lane Collins, one son,
Mr. George Langston Collins, Jr., a sister Ms. Frances Coleman and a
brother, Mr. Julius W. Garrett, Jr.
Funeral services were held Wednesday, April 23 at Ellis Creek
Missionary Baptist Church with Rev. Bruce Featherston officiating.
Burial followed in the church cemetery.
Mr. James Hugo Coleman, Jr., 66, of 5211 Black Walnut Road, Saxe
died
Friday, April 18, 2008 at his home. He was born in Halifax County
on
August 8, 1941, a son of Mrs. Georgia Ann Lacks Davis and the late
Mr.
James H. Coleman, Sr. He was a member of St. Matthew Baptist Church
and was a United States Army veteran.
In addition to his mother, he is survived by his step-father, Mr.
Ernest Davis, Sr.; one sister, Mrs. Mary Mitchell of Randallstown,
MD;
one brother, Mr. George Alfred Coleman of Crystal Hill; four
step-sisters, one step-brother, nieces and nephews, one
brother-in-law,
Mr. Moses Mitchell, one sister-in-law, Mrs. Mary Coleman, other
relatives and friends.
Funeral services will be held today at 1:00 p.m. at St. Matthew
Baptist
Church with Rev. Whitfield Scott officiating. Burial will follow in
the church cemetery with Military Rites.
Mrs. Odell Ligon Poole, 94, died Monday, April 21, 2008 at
MeadowView
Terrace, Clarksville. She was born in Buffalo Junction, a daughter
of
the late William Henry and Harriett Slagle Ligon and was married to
the
late Kenneth H. Poole. She was a retired employee of F.T. Willis
and
Son Department Store and was a member of Buffalo Baptist Church.
She is survived by a brother and sister-in-law, Bobby and Alice
Ligon
of Buffalo Junction; sisters, Lillie L. Murray of Virgilina and
Evelyn
L. Williams of Richmond; five nieces, seven nephews and several
great-nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by a sister,
Maybelle L. Long and brothers, Jack and Billy Ligon.
Funeral services were held Wednesday at Buffalo Baptist Church with
burial in the church cemetery.
Mrs. Geraldine G. Winall, 79, of 3051 Williamson Road, Alton died
Monday, April 21, 2008 at Danville Regional Medical Center. She was
born in Halifax County on November 19, 1928, a daughter of the late
William "Jack" Grinstead and Cremona Williamson Grinstead. She was
a
member of Calvary United Methodist Church and was a homemaker.
She is survived by a daughter, Laverne W. Fuller of South Boston; a
son, Butch Winall of Alton; grandchildren, Stephen A. Novak,
Jennifer
N. Toms, Julie N. Cruz, Katie Winall and six great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were held Wednesday, April 23 at Calvary United
Methodist Church with Rev. Billy Johnson officiating. Burial
followed
in the church cemetery.
ROXBORO, NC - Algie Lee "Dick" Shotwell, 78, of 5935A, Virgilina
Road
died Wednesday, April 23, 2008 at Person Memorial Hospital. He was
born in Person County, a son of the late Eugene Thomas and Lora
Turner
Shotwell. He was married to the late Shirley Wilbourne Shotwell and
was a retired carpenter with Marshall Duncan and was a member of
Ephesus Baptist Church.
He is survived by two daughters, Cindy Blalock and Pam Whitlow, both
of
Roxboro, NC; two brothers, Wade Shotwell and Wayne Shotwell, both of
Burlington, NC; five sisters, Doris Page and Frances Zimmerman, both
of
Burlington, NC, Annie Carver of Alton, Wray Long and Jean Gibson,
both
of Roxboro, NC; three grandchildren, Jennifer Whitlow, Kristin
Blalock,
Billy Melton; two step-grandchildren, Kyle Whitlow and Sabrina
Whitlow;
one great-grandson, Ivan Whitlow. He was preceded in death by a
grandson, Michael Blalock.
Graveside services will be held Saturday at 11:00 a.m. at Cherry
Hill
Methodist Church Cemetery with Rev. L.L. Watlington
officiating. The
family will receive friends Friday from 7:00-8:30 p.m. at Brooks &
White Funeral Home, Roxboro, NC.
