Obituaries
Noel Lindy Throckmorton
Mr. Noel Lindy Throckmorton, 76, of 76 Maple Avenue, Halifax died
Sunday, April 15, 2007 at Halifax Regional Hospital. He was born
in
Clover on January 16, 1931, a son of the late W. Vincent
Throckmorton
and Lizzie Nichols Throckmorton and was married to Nita S.
Throckmorton.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by one son, David N.
Throckmorton of Halifax; two daughters, Kathryn T. Shiflett and
husband
Charles of Lynchburg, Jennifer T. Bomar and husband Tony of South
Boston; two granddaughters, Kaitlin Shiflett and Hailey Bomar;
three
sisters, Bercie Glass and husband Jesse of Nathalie, Joyce Jeter
of
Florence, Al and Fran Martin and husband A.G. of Fayetteville, NC.
He
was preceded in death by one sister, Frances Denmeade and two
brothers,
Earl and Woodrow Throckmorton.
Funeral services were held Wednesday, April 18 at Clover Baptist
Church
with Rev. Tom Walker officiating. Burial followed in Clover
Cemetery.
Memorials may be directed to a favorite charity of your choice.
Barbara Stewart White
Mrs. Barbara Stewart White, 71, of 1067 Ash Avenue, South Boston
died
Monday, April 16, 2007 at her home. She was born in Person County,
NC
on December 2, 1935, a daughter of the late William Elijah Stewart
and
Banna Day Stewart and was married to the late Donald McCown White.
She
was a member of Ash Avenue Baptist Church, the American Legion
Post 8
Ladies Auxiliary and was a retired teacher with Halifax County
School
System.
She is survived by two daughters, Donna W. Daniel and husband Mike
of
Halifax, Dianna W. Tiller and husband Billy of South Boston; two
grandchildren, Jami D. Hunt and husband Stephen and Cory A.
Tiller.
Funeral services will be held today at 11:00 a.m. at Ash Avenue
Baptist
Church with Rev. John Eure officiating. Burial will follow in
Halifax
Memorial Gardens. Memorials may be directed to Ash Avenue Baptist

Dorothy A. Coleman
Mrs. Dorothy A. Coleman, 64, of 6137 Howard P. Anderson Road,
Crystal
Hill died Monday, April 16, 2007 at her home. She was born in
Halifax
County on March 17, 1943, a daughter of the late Mr. Louis Dixon
and
Mrs. Janie Jeffress Dixon. She was married to Mr. John M. Coleman,
Sr.
and was a member of Spanish Grove Baptist Church.
In addition to her husband, she is survived by one son, Mr. John
Coleman, Jr. of Fort Hood, TX; three daughters, Mrs. Angela
Jeffress of
Scottsburg, Mrs. Alice Chavis of Portsmouth and Mrs. Karen Penick
of
Halifax; two half-sisters, Mrs. Deloris Morton and Mrs. Helen
Jeffreys,
both of South Boston; one half-brother, Mr. Alexander Morton of
Richmond; one foster sister, Mrs. Earlene Medley of South Boston;
two
foster brothers, Mr. William Bouldin and Mr. James Bouldin, both
of
South Boston; 11 grandchildren, three sons-in-law, one
daughter-in-law,
one brother-in-law, other relatives and friends.
Funeral services will be held today at 1:00 p.m. at Spanish Grove
Baptist Church with Rev. William Coleman officiating. Burial will
follow in the church cemetery. Memorials may be directed to
Halifax
Regional Hospice or the American Cancer Society.
Mary Chandler Richardson
Mrs. Mary Chandler Richardson, 89, of German Creek Road, South
Boston
died Tuesday, April 17, 2007 at Halifax Regional Hospital. She was
born in North Carolina on September 29, 1917 and was married to
the
late Mr. James Richardson and was a member of Dan River Bethel
Baptist
Church.
She is survived by one daughter, Mrs. Virginia Carr of Halifax;
one
son, Mr. James Richardson of South Boston; one sister, Mrs. Bessie
Coleman of South Boston; 12 grandchildren, 17 great-grandchildren,
one
great-great-grandson; one son-in-law, Mr. Wayne Carr, one
daughter-in-law, Mrs. Carolyn Richardson; devoted friend, Mrs.
Carolyn
Richardson; other relatives and friends. She was preceded in death
by
one daughter, Mrs. Mae Emma Crawley.
Funeral services will be held Saturday, April 21 at 1:00 p.m. at
Dan
River Bethel Baptist Church with Rev. Dwight Wilkerson
officiating.
Burial will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive
friends at 2000 German Creek Road, South Boston.
Katherine Hundley Greer
Katherine Hundley Greer, 80, of South Boston died April 18, 2007.
She
was preceded in death by her parents, Mr. John T.T. Hundley, Jr.
and
Katherine Swann Hundley. She was born in Lynchburg, VA on July 29,
1926. She is survived by her husband of 59 years, James Willard
Greer,
and four children, Katherine Walker Greer, James Willard Greer,
II,
John Hundley Greer and Elizabeth Willson Greer Caldwell and her
husband, David Caldwell. She is also survived by her brother, John
T.T. Hundley, III and her sister-in-law, Patricia Hundley, ten
grandchildren and one great-grandchild. She graduated from
Longwood
College in 1947 and received a Master's degree in Reading from the
University of Virginia in 1975. She taught at C.H. Friend
Elementary
School for 17 years. She was an active member of First
Presbyterian
Church. A memorial service will be held Saturday, April 21 at 11
o'clock a.m. at the First Presbyterian Church conducted by Rev.
Elizabeth Greer Caldwell. In lieu of flowers, memorial
contributions
may be made to the Katherine H. Greer and J. Willard Greer
Scholarship
Fund at W&L University, Lexington, VA 24450, or Halifax County
Humane
Society, P.O. Box 969, South Boston, VA 24592.
. Gracie Mae Carrington
Mrs. Gracie Mae Carrington, 87, of Nathalie died April 16, 2007 in
Nathalie. She was born in Halifax County, a daughter of the late
Mr.
Richard Jennings and Mrs. Hattie Scott Jennings and was married to
the
late Mr. Eugene Carrington.
She is survived by four daughters, Iona (Junior) Jennings of
Nathalie,
Irene (Thomas) Jeffress of Bethel, CT, Jean Carrington and
Isabelle
Jennings of Alexandria; one son, Henry (Pattie) Carrington of
Nathalie;
two sisters, a twin, Lacy Drew of Brookneal and Betty Patridge of
Philadelphia, PA; two sisters-in-law, Mable Walker and Irene
Baldwin;
25 grandchildren, 46 great-grandchildren, four
great-great-grandchildren; devoted friend, Clarine Taylor of
Nathalie;
other relatives and friends.
Funeral services will be held Friday, April 20 at 11:00 a.m. at
New
Shiloh Baptist Church with Rev. Sylvester Crawley officiating.
Burial
will follow in the church cemetery.
Gordon Watt Jennings
Mr. Gordon Watt Jennings, 87, of Leesburg, formerly of Halifax
County,
died Thursday, April 12, 2007 at Inova Loudoun Hospital. He was
born
in Halifax County on January 10, 1920, a son of the late Mr. Hiram
Jennings and Mrs. Grace Elizabeth Spaggins Jennings and was
married to
the late Mrs. Gladys Elizabeth Bennett Jennings.
He is survived by three daughters, Mrs. Florence Burgess of
Washington,
DC, Ms. Mary Elizabeth Jennings of Hyattsville, MD and Ms. Regina
Jennings of Leesburg; one son, Mr. Hiram Jennings of Nathalie; one
daughter-in-law, Mrs. Patricia Jennings; seven grandchildren and
other
relatives and friends.
Funeral services will be held Saturday, April 21 at 12:30 p.m. at
New
Shiloh Baptist Church with Rev. Sylvester Crawley officiating.
Burial
will follow in the church cemetery. Memorials may be directed to
Capital Hospice, P.O. Box 1576, Merrifield, VA 22116-1576.
