OBITUARIES
William Wallace Clark
Mr. William Wallace Clark, 64, of 1424 Beard Street, South Boston,
died Thursday, April 3, 2008 at his home. He was born in Halifax
County on May 20, 1943, a son of the late Ms. Mary Clark Chappell
and Mr. Milton Wyatt. He was married to the late Mrs. Elsie Irving
Clark, was a member of Piney Grove Baptist Church, a former employee
of J.P. Stevens Converter and retired from the Town of South Boston
in 2005. He is survived by two daughters, Ms. LaTonya F. Clark of
Richmond and Ms. Felicia Hughes of South Boston; two sons, Mr.
Anthony E. Clark of Richmond and Mr. Quentin W. Clark of South
Boston; one grandson, Mr. Anthony R. Hutherson of Goldsboro, NC; one
god-granddaughter, Ms. Jada N. Davis of Halifax; three sisters, Mrs.
Thelma Chappell of South Boston, Mrs. Mary Lee Brandon of
Washington, DC and Mrs. Lucille C. Jones of Pennsauken, NJ; three
brothers, Mr. Sandra "Doc" Wyatt of South Boston, Mr. Richard
Chappell, Jr. and Mr. George Chappell, both
of Baltimore, MD; one uncle, six aunts, two sisters-in-law, Mrs.
Charlene Chappell and Mrs. Shirley Wyatt, other relatives and
friends. He was preceded in death by two sisters, Mrs. Roxie Clark
Scott and Mrs. Patricia Ann Wyatt. Funeral services were held
Wednesday, April 9 at Mizpah Presbyterian Church with Rev. George
Wilson officiating. Memorials may be directed to Mizpah
Presbyterian Church, 308 Ragland Street, South Boston, VA
24592.
Bernice Leon Younger
Mr. Bernice Leon Younger, 78, of 5089 Bold Springs Road, South
Boston died Saturday, April 5, 2008 at his home. He was born in
Halifax County on September 26, 1929, a son of the late Mr. Extra
Coleman Younger and Mrs. Ollie Crawley Younger. He was married to
the late Mrs. Louise Terry Younger, was a member of Dan River Bethel
Baptist Church and was a Korean War Army Veteran. He is survived by
one daughter, Mrs. Ollie Y. Gosier of South Boston; three sisters,
Mrs. Odella Williams of Roanoke, Mrs. Gracie Terry and Mrs. Lucy
Beard, both of South Boston; one brother, Mr. Johnny Younger of
South Boston; one son-in-law, Mr. Kevin Gosier; five sisters-in-law,
Mrs. Verley Terry, Mrs. Bessie Mae Edmonds, Mrs. Sue Alice Logan,
Mrs. Frances Logan, Mrs. Elvira Johns; one brother-in-law, Mr.
Matthew Logan, other relatives and friends. Funeral services will be
held today at 2:00 p.m. at Dan River Bethel Baptist Church with Rev.
Dwight Wilkerson officiating. Burial will follow in the church
cemetery with military rites by American Legion Post 99.
Harry Hazelwood
Mr. Harry Hazelwood, Jr., 71, of Amherst and formerly of Chase City,
died April 8, 2008. He was the son of the late Roller and Gracie
Hazelwood and was a retired employee of D.B.L. Construction. He is
survived by his brothers, Joe Hazelwood of Clover, Mac Hazelwood of
Kenbridge, Hampton Hazelwood of Scottsburg, Bradley Hazelwood and
Jackie Hazelwood of Red Oak, Victor Hazelwood of Skipwith;, Glen
Hazelwood of Chase City; sisters, Rachel Higgins of Red Oak, Nellie
Snead of Scottsburg, Doris Hazelwood of Boydton, Carolyn Wright of
Red Oak. He was preceded in death by three brothers, Isaac and
Jessie Hazelwood and Ricky Clay and a devoted friend, Eva Mason. The
family will receive friends 7:00-8:30 Friday evening at Wood Funeral
Service, Chase City. Services will be private. Memorials may be
directed to Hospice of the Hills, 3300 Rivermont Avenue, Lynchburg,
VA 24503.
George Lee Compton
Rev. George Lee Compton, 80, of 184 Buffalo Road, Clarksville died
Tuesday, April 8, 2008 at MeadowView Terrace, Clarksville. He was
born in Halifax County on June 6, 1927, son of the late John Henry
Compton
and Macey Bray Compton and was married to the late Frances Vaden
Compton. He was a member of Centerville Baptist Church and a
retired Baptist minister. He is survived by three brothers, John
Henry Compton of Henderson, NC, Clarence Compton of Salisbury, NC
and Frank Compton of Mexia, TX; one sister, Lillie Mae Atallah of
Belton, TX. He was preceded in death by brothers Robert T. Compton
and James Lewis Compton and sister, Mary Frances Compton. Funeral
services will be held Saturday, April 12 at Brooks Funeral Home with
Rev. Bill Wingard and Rev. Bill Winstead officiating. Burial will
follow in Oak Ridge Cemetery. The family will receive friends
Saturday from 1:00-2:00 p.m. at Brooks Funeral Home.
Edna Henry Drumwright
Mrs. Edna Henry Drumwright of 2001 College Street, South Boston died
April 6, 2008 at Berry Hill Nursing Home at the age of 87. Born in
Pittsylvania County on March 6, 1921, she was the daughter of the
late Mr. Julius Henry and Mrs. Lucy Anne Wilson Henry. She was
married to the late Mr. Ivance Drumwright and was a member of
Ebenezer CME Church. Mrs. Drumwright is survived by two sons, Mr.
Albert Drumwright of Clarksville and Mr. Larry Drumwright of South
Boston, a sister, Mrs. Sarah Edmondson of Danville, two
grandchildren, three great
grandchildren, a daughter-in-law, Mrs. Phyllis Drumwright, a devoted
friend, Mrs. Virginia Williams and a host of nieces, nephews, other
relatives and friends. She was preceded in death by a sister, Mrs.
Lucille Bullock and four brothers, Pat, Leslie, Conway and Woodrow
Henry. A funeral service for Mrs. Drumwright will be conducted on
Saturday, April 12 at 12 noon at the Crawford House Chapel in
Halifax. Burial will follow in Oak Ridge Cemetery. Public viewing
for family and friends will be at Jeffress Funeral Home in South
Boston on Friday from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. The family will receive
friends at the home, 2001 College Street. South Boston.
