Lorene Gravitt Nelson
Lorene Gravitt Nelson, 87, of 1048 Carolina Avenue, Virgilina died
Monday, March 24, 2008 at her home. She was born in Virgilina on
June
17, 1920. She was married to the late Robie James Nelson and was a
member of Union Christian Church.
She is survived by one daughter, Shellie Nelson Bellairs and husband
Del of Raleigh, NC; two sons, James Allen Nelson and wife Vivian of
Roanoke and Ira Bran Nelson and wife Sharon of South Boston;
grandchildren, Teri Loree Bellairs and friend Lance Buchholz, Dwayne
Alan Nelson and wife Kim, David Victor Nelson and wife Nikki, Laura
Nelson Woods and husband Patrick, Jeffrey Allen Nelson and fiancé
April
Feeser, Michael Thomas Nelson and wife Debra; great-grandchildren,
Mollie Mckenzie Woods, Emily Anne Woods, Katherine "Kate" Leigh
Nelson.
She was preceded in death by several brothers and sisters.
Funeral services will be held today at 2:00 p.m. at Brooks Funeral
Home
Chapel with Rev. Jimmy Pulliam officiating. Burial will follow in
the
Virgilina Cemetery. Memorials may be directed to the Halifax

Joseph Lagar Newman
Mr. Joseph Lagar Newman of Maryland, formerly of Halifax County,
died
Friday, March 21, 2008 at the age of 57. Born in Halifax County on
September 20, 1950, he was the son of the late Mr. Belvie William
Newman and Mrs. Julia Rogers Newman.
Mr. Newman is survived by Mrs. Helena Newman, two daughters, Ms. Joy
Newman of Upper Marlboro, MD and Ms. Ashley Newman of Cheltenham,
MD,
four brothers, Mr. Belvie Newman of Hampton, Mr. Arliss Newman of
Raleigh, NC, Mr. Andrew Newman of Charlotte, NC and Mr. Truman
Newman
of Danville, four sisters, Mrs. Dorothy G. Passley of South Boston,
Mrs. Callie Parker of Raleigh, NC, Mrs. Millie Spicely of Wilson and
Mrs. Julia Gay of Upper Marlboro, MD, two brothers-in-law, Mr. John
Parker and Mr. Preston Spicely, three sisters-in-law, Mrs. Betty
Newman, Mrs. Thelma Newman and Mrs. Barbara Newman, two aunts and a
host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
A funeral service for Mr. Newman will be conducted Friday, March 28
at
2 p.m. at Dan River Bethel Baptist Church with Rev. Dwight Wilkerson
officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. The family
will
receive friends at Jeffress Funeral Home Chapel on Thursday from 7
to 8
p.m and at all other times at the home of Mrs. Dorothy Passley, 1024
Newman Drive, South Boston.
Rosa Alice Griffin Hite,
Mrs. Rosa Alice Griffin Hite, age 100, of Buffalo
Junction died Wednesday, March 26, 2008 at her home. Born October
12,
1907 in Mecklenburg County, she was the daughter of the late Robert
H.
“Heck” Griffin and Rosa Owen Griffin. Mrs. Hite worked with
Burlington
Mills for over twenty-five years prior to retiring in 1972, and was
a
member of the Buffalo Baptist Tabernacle.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her
husband,
Overland Grey “Dick” Hite in 1971, her son, Ryland Winn Hite in
2004,
her son-in-law, Carlton S. Bowen in 2007, two infant sons, as well
as
six brothers and two sisters.
Surviving are her daughter, Joan Hite Bowen of Buffalo Junction; a
daughter-in-law, Marjorie Murray Hite of Clarksville; a
granddaughter,
Karen Hite Overton and husband, Anthony, and their children, David,
Michelle and Thomas Grey Overton, all of Buffalo Junction and a
grandson, Russell C. Bowen and wife Lauren and their sons, Tyler,
Zach
and Cole Bowen, all of Raleigh, NC.
Funeral services will be held Saturday, March 29 at 2 o’clock in the
Chapel of Watkins Cooper Lyon Funeral Home with the Reverend Dr.
David
Pruett and the Reverend Bill Weeks officiating. Interment will
follow
in the Gravel Hill Cemetery.
The family will receive friends Friday evening from 7 till 8:30 p.m.
at
the Watkins Cooper Lyon Funeral Home in Clarksville.

Lorenzo Orange "Brew" Cardwell
Mr. Lorenzo Orange "Brew" Cardwell died Thursday, March 20, 2008.
The
son of the late Lazarus Cardwell and Fannie B. Cardwell, he was born
August 8, 1911 and was 96 at the time of his death. He was a member
of
Williams Temple CME Church and was a retired tobacco farmer. He was
first married to the late Ester Mae Terry and later to Ophelia E.
Medley.
Mr. Cardwell is survived by five daughters, Ruth S. Crawley, Willie
Mae
Ragsdale, Celestine W. Sutphin (Floyd), Rev. Shirley Cardwell and
Brenda C. Spraggins (Michael) all of South Boston and four sons,
Jerry
Cardwell of Seatpleasant, MD, Douglas Cardwell of Washington, DC and
Willard Cardwell (Jacqueline) and James "Buck" Cardwell of South
Boston, a stepson, Mr. David L. Medley (Yvonne) of South Boston and
a
sister, Mamie Sizer of Philadelphia, PA, five sisters-in-law, Irene
M.
Hankins, Mattie Newman (Harold) of South Boston, Pauline Montogmery
(Ivory) of Conn., Elizabeth Cardwell of Southern Pines, NC, Jane
Medley
of Patterson, New Jersey and two brothers-in-law, Albert Medley
(Betty)
of Washington, DC and Willie F. Medley (Ella Mae) of South Boston.
He
is also survived by 21 grandchildren, two step grandchildren, 32
great
grandchildren and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. He
was preceded in death by two sons, Fredderick Cardwell and Thomas
Lee
Cardwell, Sr., two grandsons, one granddaughter and one great
grandson.
A funeral service for Mr. Cardwell was conducted on Sunday, March 23
at
2 p.m. at Williams Temple CME Church with burial following in the
church cemetery.
