Obituaries
Irene Rogers Ford
Ms. Irene Rogers Ford, 80, of 2224 Huell Matthews Highway,
South Boston
died Sunday, March 16, 2008 at Lynchburg General Hospital.
She was born
in Boydton on June 6, 1927, daughter of the late Walter Lee
Rogers and
Jessie Irene Thompson Rogers and was married to the late
George Wyche
Ford, Sr. She was a member of Shady Grove United Methodist
Church and
United Methodist Women, was a member of American Legion Post
8
Auxiliary and was a volunteer with the Good Samaritan and
Wishing Well
at Halifax Regional Hospital. Ms. Ford was also a retired
beautician
and former owner of Ednes Beauty Shop.
She is survived by two sons, Doug Ford of South Boston and
G. Wyche
Ford, Jr. of Anchorage, AK; sisters, Edith Cannon and Ethel
Faison,
both of Emporia, Doris Gregory of Chase City, Isla Boyd of
Richmond,
Geneva Collins of Oak Island, NC, Rachel Thompson of Tyler,
TX;
brother, Dennis Rogers of Boydton; and grandson, Chase Ford
of
Anchorage, AK. She was preceded in death by a brother,
George Rogers.
Funeral services will be held Friday, March 21 at 11:00 a.m.
at Shady
Grove United Methodist Church with Rev. L. Raymond McGarr
officiating.
Burial will follow in the church cemetery. The family will
receive
friends tonight from 6:00-8:00 p.m. at Brooks Funeral Home.
John Jasper Quarles
Mr. John Jasper Quarles, 91, of 4210 Clarkston Road,
Nathalie died
Sunday, March 16, 2008 at his home. He was born in Halifax
County on
June 15, 1916, son of the late Mr. Willie Quarles and Mrs.
Josephine
Logan Quarles. He was married to Mrs. Mable Clements
Quarles and was a
member of Brown's Memorial Church of God in Christ.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by six daughters,
Mrs.
Josephine Benjamin of South Ozone Park, NY, Mrs. Cordelia
Edwards and
Mrs. Pat Edwards, both of Durham, NC, Mrs. Connie Granger of
Lexington
Park, MD, Mrs. Octavia Torres and Mrs. Mereal Hughes, both
of Richmond;
six sons, Mr. John Robert Quarles of Halifax, Mr. Irving
Quarles of
North Carolina, Mr. Willie Sydnor, Jr. and Mr. Glen Clements
of
Nathalie, Mr. Junious Quarles of New York and Mr. Kelly
Quarles of
Maryland; one stepson, Mr. Johnny Clements of the home; two
sisters,
Mrs. Georgia Garrett of Richmond and Mrs. Richie Smith of
Nathalie; 14
grandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren, four
great-great-grandchildren;
four sons-in-law, Mr. Brian Edwards, Mr. Brent Edwards, Mr.
Geraldo
Torres and Mr. Leroy Hughes; two daughters-in-law, Mrs.
Doris Quarles
and Mrs. Betty Quarles; other relatives and friends.
Funeral services were held Wednesday, March 19 at Brown's
Memorial
Church of God in Christ with Rev. Elder William Mosby, Jr.
officiating.
Burial followed in the church cemetery.
Pearl Smith Reynolds
Mrs. Pearl Smith Reynolds, 69, of 1011 Chestnut Creek Road,
Halifax
died Monday, March 17, 2008 at Lynchburg General
Hospital. She was
born in Roanoke on April 15, 1938, daughter of the late Mr.
Henry Smith
and Mrs. Mary Snellings Smith. She was married to Mr. Clyde
Reynolds
and was a member of County Line Baptist Church.
In addition to her husband, she is survived by one son, Mr.
Michael
Arthur Smith of Clifton Forge; three brothers, Mr. Tommy
Smith of
Roanoke, Mr. Richard Smith of Richmond, Mr. Andrew Smith of
Vinton; one
grandchild; her brother and sisters-in-laws, Mr. and Mrs.
Arthur and
Margaret Reynolds of Nathalie, Dr. and Mrs. Lawrence and
Irene Clark of
Raleigh, NC, Mr. and Rev. Clifton and Florence Reynolds of
Zuni and Mr.
and Mrs. John and Shirley Reynolds of Roanoke; other
relatives and
friends.
Memorial services will be held Friday, March 21 at 11:00
a.m. at County
Line Baptist Church with Rev. Otis Dillard officiating. The
family will
receive friends at her home.
Lynwood Wayne Slayton
Mr. Lynwood Wayne Slayton, 59, of 2088 Sandy Beach Road,
South Boston
died Monday, March 17, 2008 at Halifax Regional
Hospital. He was born
in Danville on June 25, 1948, son of Nadine Bohannon Slayton
and the
late Lynwood David Slayton and was married to the late
Florence Marie
Weatherford Slayton. He was a member of Mt. Tabor Baptist
Church, a
retired construction worker and an Army veteran.
In addition to his mother, he is survived daughters,
Chrystal Slayton
Harris of South Boston, Cynthia Slayton White of Richmond,
Candice
Slayton of Nathalie; one brother, Jamie Slayton of Vernon
Hill; four
grandchildren and one nephew.
Funeral services will be held today at 3:00 p.m. at Brooks
Funeral Home
Chapel with Rev. Carl E. Burger officiating. Burial will
follow in the
Slayton Family Cemetery, Vernon Hill.
Bessie Petty Faulkner
Bessie Petty Faulkner, 81, of 6071 L. P. Bailey Memorial
Highway,
Halifax died on Saturday, March 15, 2008, in her home. She
is the
daughter of the late Charlie and Lillian (Harris) Petty and
was a
member of both the Owens Grove and the Murphy's Grove
Baptist Churches.
She is survived by two children, Mrs. Royse D. (Calden)
Bumphus, of
Silver Spring, MD; Mr. Aundra R. Faulkner, of the home; two
siblings,
Mrs. Lillian P. (Richard) Hodges of Colonie, NY and the
Reverend Dr.
Charles L. (Mae Frances) Petty of Detroit, MI; five
grandchildren: Dr.
Tracy V. Faulkner (Dr. Tan-Lucien H. Mohammed), Lt. Calvin
E. Bumphus,
Sgt. Nicole V. (Randy) Dailey, J. Keith (Stephanie)
Faulkner, Jewel D.
Faulkner; four great-grandchildren; a host of nieces,
nephews,
relatives and devoted friends.
Funeral services will be held Saturday, March 22 at 11:00
a.m. at
Murphy's Grove Baptist Church with burial to follow in the
church
cemetery. Visitation will be held Friday, March 21 from
6:00-8:00 p.m.

Louis Elmer Conner
Mr. Louis Elmer Conner, Jr., 36, of Virginia Beach died
Tuesday, March
17, 2008 at his home. He was born in South Boston on
October 28, 1971,
son of Louis E. Conner, Sr. and Linda Day Conner. He was a
member of
First Baptist Church of South Boston, a graduate of the
University of
Virginia and the Appalachian School of Law. He was an
attorney with
the Chris Falk Law Firm, Chesapeake and the Southside
Utility Company.
In addition to his parents, he is survived by one sister,
Edie L.
Dawson of Danville; two nephews, Christopher Davidson of
Danville and
Justin Davidson of Florida; an uncle, Don O. Conner of South
Boston; a
great-nephew, Isaiah Davidson of Danville.
Graveside services will be held Friday, March 21 at 2:00
p.m. at Oak
Ridge Cemetery with Rev. Stephanie Powell and Rev. Jocelyn
Emerson

John Wilfred Carr
Mr. John Wilfred Carr, 67, of 928 Ash Avenue, South Boston
died
Tuesday, March 18, 2008 at his home. He was born in
Alexandria on
January 16, 1941, son of the late Fred Carr and Margaret
Lacy Carr and
was married to Alice Bell Carr. He was a member of Ash
Avenue Baptist
Church.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by three daughters,
Kim Ballard
and husband Mark of Danville, KY, Donna Teresa Carr of South
Boston,
Tracy Carr of Halifax; three grandchildren, Brittany Carr,
Lane and
Clay Ballard; one sister, Janie Sarkozi of Reva; two
brothers, Bruce
Carr of Smyrna, GA and Louie Carr of Culpepper.
Funeral services will be held Friday, March 21 at 3:00 p.m.
at South
Boston Church of God with Rev. Bruce Hagy

Mattie Lee Williams
Mattie Lee Williams, 82, of Manassas, died Sunday, March 16,
2008 at
her home. She was born September 1, 295 and was a member of
Manassas
Presbyterian Church.
She is survived by her husband, Raymond P. Williams, Jr.;
sons, Walter
Neely of Vinton, Peter Williams of Manassas; daughters,
Ellen
McEldowney and husband John of Charleston, WVA, Penny
Abernathy and
husband Eric of Bristow; sister, Rosamond Brown of Michigan;
brother,
Leonard Collie of Verona and grandchildren John McEldowney,
Nathan
Abernathy, Brooke Abernathy, other relatives and
friends. She was
preceded in death by brothers Felix Collie, Maynard Collie
and sister
Hilda Bush.
Funeral services will be held Friday, March 21 at 11:00 a.m.
at
Manassas Presbyterian Church with Rev. Skip Ferguson
officiating.
Burial will follow at Quantico National Cemetery.
Teresa Ellen Burton
Teresa Ellen Burton died on March 18, 2008, surrounded by
her loving
family. Her death follows a brave and cheerful fight against
non-Hodgkin's Lymphoma. She was born in South Boston on
March 20, 1957,
the cherished youngest child of Betty Crews Burton and John
Edward
Burton, who died in 1986. Teresa is survived by her husband,
John
Wagener Bloxham; and their treasured dogs and cats in their
Goochland
home. She is survived by her loving sister and lifelong best
friend,
Mary Ruth Burton and her husband, Rich McClain; along with
Mary Ruth's
children, Burton Fuller and Ruth Harrison Fuller, who were
truly part
Teresa's. Other survivors include her brothers and
sisters-in-law, John
Burton and wife, Kay, of South Boston, Don Burton and wife,
Sonya, of
Asheboro, NC; sisters, Lynn Burton and partner, Sylvia
Lindsey, of
Richmond, Meredith Bowman and her husband, Doug, of South
Boston;
Teresa's nephews and their wives, Ward and Tabitha Burton of
Halifax,
Brian and Judith Burton of South Boston, Jeff and Kim Burton
of
Charlotte; and all their beautiful children, Jeb, Sarah,
Ashton,
Alexander, Paige and Harrison. She is survived by three
half-sisters,
Barbara Oakes of Richmond, Jean Centner and Doris Robertson
of
Tennessee. She is survived by her loving in-laws, John and
Doris Savage
of Charlottesville and Dr. Jack Bloxham and his wife, Beth.
Based on
her keen intellect and high scores, she was invited to
attend several
universities after her junior year at Halifax County High
School. She
attended Appalachian State University, later transferring to
Virginia
Commonwealth University, where she received a B.A. in
English and
post-baccalaureate degree in Accounting. She started a small
business
handling accounts for creative businesses and restaurants in
the Fan
area and later managed restaurants with Alan delForn. For
many years,
she worked for James River Corporation where she worked in
tax,
information systems and human resources implementing systems
across the
U.S. and in Canada. At the time of her death, she was a
systems analyst
for Bon Secours Health System. Visitation will be on
Thursday from 5:30
to 8 p.m. at the Burton/McClain home. Memorial services will
be held
outside at her church, St. John's Episcopal Church,
Columbia, VA at 2
p.m. on Friday, March 21. A graveside service will be held
at the
family plot in Oak Ridge Cemetery, South Boston, VA on
Saturday, March
22, at 11 a.m. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions
may be made
to Best Friends Animal Society, 5001 Angel Canyon Road,
Kanab, Utah
84741 or another animal protection organization of your
choice. The
family wishes to thank Teresa's many faithful friends along
with the
caring nurses and doctors at Massey Cancer Center and the
Virginia
Cancer Institute. Also, to honor Teresa, please enjoy a book
by a new
author and then pass it along to a friend, as she did
hundreds of
times.
Hank Sherwin Hite
Mr. Hank Sherwin Hite, 44, died March 19, 2008 at his
residence. He was
born and reared in Halifax County and was a graduate of
Halifax County
High School with the Class of 1982. A member of Aarons Creek
Baptist
Church, he had worked for Virginia Homes and for the past 10
years had
been employed with Clarksville Painting.
A memorial service will be held on Friday at 11 a.m. in the
chapel at
Watkins Cooper Lyon Funeral Home in Clarksville.
He is survived by his wife, Tammy F. Hite of Chase City,
sons Shawn Lee
Hite of Baskerville and Christopher Scott Hite of Chase
City, sister,
Janet Hite Eastwood of Roxboro, NC, his mother and
step-father, Maxine
and Walter Thomas of Virgilina, girlfriend, Linda Bailey of
Clarksville
and stepson, Travis Berger, also of Clarksville. He was
preceded in
