Obituaries

Oscar Stover Tuck
Mr. Oscar Stover Tuck, 92, of Durham, NC, formerly of Halifax County,
died Sunday, March 9, 2008 at Durham VA Medical Center.  He was born in
Halifax County on September 17, 1914, a son of the late Henry A. Tuck
and Sylvia Rickman Tuck.  He was a member of Revelation Baptist Church
and an Army Veteran of World War II.
He is survived by two sisters, Lillian Rebecca Kidd of Silver Springs,
MD, Edith Ray of Morehead City, NC, and a number of nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held today at 11:00 a.m. at Powell Funeral
Home Chapel with Rev. Don Bryant officiating.  Burial will follow in
Oak Ridge Cemetery.
 
Willie Thomas Holt
Mr. Willie Thomas Holt, 28, of 1187 Huell Matthews Highway, South
Boston died Monday, March 10, 2008 at Halifax Regional Hospital.  He
was born in South Boston on January 4, 1980, a son of Edward Thomas
Holt and Barbara Cole Holt.  He was a member of Southside Baptist
Church, was a 1999 graduate of Halifax County High School and a 28 year
member of Woodmen of the World.
In addition to his parents, he is survived by a brother, Allen Holt and
wife Mindy Trammell of Virgilina; aunt, Brenda Thaxton; uncles, Edward
Cole and wife Edith, Timmy Cole and wife Regina, William H. Holt and
Bobby R. Holt.  He was preceded in death by a sister, Lee Ann Holt and
his grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Fred Cole and Mr. and Mrs. Willie S.
Holt. Funeral services were held Wednesday, March 12 at Southside Baptist
Church with Rev. Don Bryant officiating.  Burial followed in the Shady
Grove UMC Cemetery.  Memorials may be directed to the American Diabetes
Association, Southside Baptist Church or the Shady Grove UMC Cemetery
Fund.
 
Susie Powell Neal
Mrs. Susie Powell Neal, 83, of Landover, MD, formerly of Halifax
County, died in Maryland.  She was born March 5, 1925 in Halifax
County, a daughter of the late Mr. Extra Powell and Mrs. Judith Powell
and was married to the late Mr. Richard Donald Neal.
She is survived by one daughter, Mrs. Nancy Neal Jones; two sons, Mr.
Harry Neal and Mr. Michael Neal; one brother, Rev. Andrew Powell
(Janice Powell); four sisters, Mrs. Vernessia, Mrs. Barbara, Mrs. Jean
and Mrs. Dorothy; three grandchildren, one son-in-law, other relatives
and friends.  She was preceded in death by one brother, Mr. Clarence
Powell. Funeral services were held Thursday, March 6 in Landover, MD.
 
Leon Hugo Farmer
Mr. Leon Hugo Farmer, 91, of Wagstaff Lane, South Boston died March 10,
2008 at The Woodview.  He was born in Halifax County on August 13,
1916, a son of the late Mr. James Edward Farmer and Mrs. Sally Lawson
Farmer and was a member of First Baptist Church, Ferry Street.
He is survived by one son, Mr. Charlie Farmer of South Boston; one
grandson, Mr. Charles McBride of Hartford, CO; four granddaughters,
Mrs. Gia McBride, Mrs. Stacey Perry, Mrs. Rita Blatche, Ms. Stacey
Farmer; seven great-grandchildren, other relatives and friends.  He was
preceded in death by one son, Mr. Bobby L. Farmer, three brothers, Mr.
Edward Farmer, Jr., Mr. Charlie L. Farmer and Mr. Herman Farmer.
Funeral services will be held Sunday, March 16 at 2:00 p.m. at First
Baptist Church, Ferry Street with Rev. Haywood Jennings officiating.
Burial will follow in the Farmer Family Cemetery.  Public viewing will
be held Saturday from 12:00-6:00 p.m. at Jeffress Funeral Home Chapel.
Mrs. Grace Yvonne Stanfield Trimble
Mrs. Grace Yvonne Stanfield Trimble, 62, of Bronx, NY, formerly of
Halifax County, died Saturday, March 8, 2008.  She was born in Halifax
County on June 26, 1945, a daughter of the late Mr. Albert Nick
Stanfield and Mrs. Bertha McCargo Stanfield.  She was married to Mr.
Charles Trimble and was a member of Emanuel Baptist Church, NY.
In addition to her husband, she is survived by two children, Mr. Gary
Trimble and Mrs. Ginger Buckley; five grandchildren; her step-mother,
Mrs. Gracie Stanfield of South Boston; five brothers, Mr. Albert
Stanfield, Mr. Philmore Lester, Mr. Leon Stanfield, all of South
Boston, Mr. Jerome Satterfield of Hampton, Mr. Billy Chandler of
Salisbury, MD; eight sisters, Mrs. Bertha Rogers and Miss Lucille
Stanfield, both of South Boston, Ms. Karen Carden of Scottsburg, Ms.
Marie Walton and Mrs. Atha Ridges, both of Bronx, NY, Mrs. Marjorie
Carrington of Newport News, Mrs. Martha Mitchell, Mrs. Geri Stan and
Ms. Barbara Columbus of Salisbury, MD; five brothers-in-law, five
sisters-in-law, other relatives and friends, included Ms. Annie
Logan-Johnson.
Funeral services will be held Friday, March 14 at 2:00 p.m. at Jeters
Chapel Baptist Church with Rev. Antonio Brown officiating.  Burial will
follow in the church cemetery.
 
Nettie Tuck Snead
Nettie Tuck Snead, 83, of 206 S. Main Street, Clover died Tuesday,
March 11, 2008 at Halifax Regional Hospital.  She was born in Halifax
County on November 25, 1924, a daughter of the late Peter Tuck and
Lottie Powell Tuck Newcomb and was married to the late Lafayette Snead.
  She was a member of Clover Baptist Church.
She is survived by a sister, Florence T. Newcomb of Clover, other
relatives and friends.  She was preceded in death by two brothers,
Melvin Tuck and Henry M. Tuck and a sister, Lennie Tuck.
Funeral services will be held Friday, March 14 at 2:00 p.m. at Brooks
Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Aubrey Heath officiating.  Burial will
follow in Clover Cemetery.  Memorials may be directed to Clover
Volunteer Fire Department, P.O. Box 199, Clover, VA 24534.  The family
will meet at Brooks Funeral Home tonight from 7:00-8:30 p.m.
 
Ollie Catherine Rock
Mrs. Ollie Catherine Rock, 64, of Bayou Vista, LA died Monday, March
10, 2008 at Terrebonne General Medical Center.  She was born in Halifax
County on August 2, 1943, a daughter of the late Willie Lee Hazelwood
and Annie King Hazelwood and was married to Joseph Rock.  She was a
member of Bayou Vista Community Fellowship Church.
In addition to her husband, she is survived by two sons, Kent M. East
and wife Susan of Clover, Jackie East of Berwick, LA; step-son, Troy
Michael Rock of Metairie, LA; step-daughters, Wendy Marie Gauthier and
husband Mike of Metairie, LA and Lynnette Rock and husband Tim of PA;
brothers, Bradley Hazelwood and wife Jean of Halifax, Elderidge
Hazelwood of Scottsburg; sisters, Daisy Franklin of Scottsburg, Barbara
Hazelwood and husband Joe of Clover, Ida Conner and husband Mitchell of
Halifax; grandchild, Cathy Lee East, five great-grandchildren.  She was
preceded in death by a sister, Carol Sue Hazelwood and son, Ricky Lee
East. Graveside services will be held Saturday, March 15 at 2:00 p.m. at
Clover Cemetery with Rev. Lloyd Moore officiating.  The family will
meet at Brooks Funeral Home on Friday, March 14 from 7:00-8:30 p.m.
 

Frances Brandon Jeffress

Mrs. Frances Brandon Jeffress of Philadelphia, PA, formerly of Halifax
County, died Monday, March 10, 2008 in Philadelphia at the age of 83.
Born in Halifax County on April 8, 1924, she was the daughter of the
late Ms. Betty Ann Brandon and was married to the late Mr. George
Jeffress and was a member of St. Mark Baptist Church.
Mrs. Jeffress is survived by two daughters, Mrs. Dorothy Darden and
Mrs. Gladys Newman, both of Philadelphia PA, 11 grandchildren, 10 great
grandchildren, a sister-in-law, Mrs. Lena Brandon of North Carolina and
a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. She was
preceded in death by a son, Mr. Jimmie Jeffress.
A funeral service for Mrs. Jeffress will be held Saturday, March 15 at
11 a.m. at St. Mark Baptist Church with Rev. Herbert Pettiford
officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
 
Virginia Lipscomb Strignano
Mrs. Virginia Lipscomb Strignano of Plantation, Florida, formerly of
Halifax County, died Monday, March 11, 2008 at the age of 94. Born in
Halifax County on April 23, 1913, she was the daughter of the late Mr.
Henry P. Lipscomb and Mrs. Susie Cunningham Lipscomb. She was married
to the late Mr. Salvatore Strignano.
Mrs. Strignano is survived by her niece and son-in-law, Mrs. Michele
Holland and Mr. Robert Holland of Orlando, FL, her great niece and
nephew, Ms. Rashida A. Holland of Tallahassee, FL and Mr. Kiar J.
Holland of Miami, FL, her cousins, Mr. Tonnie Villines, Mrs. Audrey
Villines and Ms. Grace Villines, all of Richmond, Mrs. Sally Samuels
and family of South Boston, Ms. Ramona Bell and family of Philadelphia,
PA, Ms. Irma Wigingham and family of North Carolina and Mr. Joseph
Crawley and family of South Boston. She was preceded in death by a
brother, Mr. Henry P. Lipscomb, Jr. who died March 4, 2008.
A funeral service for Ms. Strignano will be held Saturday, March 15 at
3 p.m. at the Crossroad Baptist Church in Turbeville with Rev. John T.
Hubbard officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. The
family will receive friends at the church on Saturday.
