Obituaries

Mrs. Virginia Lloyd Loftis

Mrs. Virginia Lloyd Loftis of 2204 Eastover Drive, South Boston died
Sunday, March 9, 2008 at her home. Born on February 25, 1925 in
Mecklenburg County, she was 83 at the time of her death. A member of
Ash Avenue Baptist Church, she was a former employee of Faulkner &
Lawson Drug Store.
Mrs. Loftis is survived by two sons, Clifton "Junior" Lloyd, Jr. and
wife Sherrie, Bobby G. Lloyd and wife Dolores and daughter, Peggy L.
Vassar and husband Jimmy, all of South Boston, a granddaughter, Misty
Lloyd Dickerson and two grandsons, Matt and Steve Lloyd and great
grandchildren, Haley and Dane Dickerson. Also surviving is a sister,
Viola Boaz of Virginia Beach.  She was preceded in death by her
husband, Clifton Lloyd, Sr. and her parents, Nannie Newton and Junious
G. Newton.
A graveside service will be conducted at Nelson Baptist Church cemetery
on Tuesday, March 11 at 2 p.m. with the Rev. John Eure officiating. The
family will receive friends on Monday, March 10 from 7 to 8:30 p.m. and
at other  times at the home, 2204 Eastover Drive, South Boston. Those

Mrs. Mannie Louise Allen Coleman
Mrs. Mannie Louise Allen Coleman, 93, of South Boston died Tuesday,
March 4, 2008 at The Woodview Nursing Home. She was born in Halifax
County on January 4, 1915, a daughter of the late Mr. Richard Allen and
Mrs. Lillian Chaffer Allen.  She was married to the late Mr. Algie
Coleman, Jr. and was a member of St. James Baptist Church.
She is survived by three daughters, Ms. Nannie Coleman of South Boston,
Mrs. Minnie C. Foy of Tuckahoe, NY and Ms. Marion Coleman of Yonkers,
NY; three sons: Mr. Robert Coleman and Mr. Stephen Coleman, both of
Yonkers, NY, and Mr. Clinton "Phil" Coleman of Alexandria; 10
grandchildren; 17 great grandchildren; one niece; three nephews and a
host of other relatives and friends.  She was preceded in death by one
son, Charles E. Coleman; two sisters: Elizabeth Crews and Nannie Allen;
and two brothers: James Allen and Richard Allen, Jr.
Funeral services will be held today at 1:00 p.m. at St. James Baptist
Church with Rev. Byrd Blackwell officiating.  Burial will follow in the
church cemetery.

 

Bonnie Lou Clay McKinney
Mrs. Bonnie Lou Clay McKinney, 61, of 3175 Oak Level Road, Halifax died
Thursday, March 6, 2008 at Berry Hill Health and Rehab.  She was born
in Halifax County on April 8, 1946, a daughter of the late William
Herman Clay and Ada Lovelace Clay and was married to Willie Lee
McKinney.  She was a member of Catawba Baptist Church.
In addition to her husband, she is survived by one daughter, Patsy Luke
of Williamsburg; four sons, twins Len Clay of South Boston and Glenn
Clay and wife Janet of South Boston, George McKinney and wife Cathy of
Cluster Springs and Addie McKinney and wife Deborah of South Boston;
four sisters, Corine Myers of South Boston, Estelle Hodges of Nathalie,
Patty Clay and Lillian Crews, both of South Boston; four brothers,
Stuart Clay of Altavista, Bobby Clay of Nathalie, Ernest Clay of
Halifax and Floyd Clay of Clover and 10 grandchildren.  She was
preceded in death by one son, Melvin Edward McKinney and one sister,
Sterling Ingram.
Graveside services were held Saturday, March 8 at Oakland Cemetery,
Scottsburg, with Rev. Don Bryant and Rev. Richard Saunders officiating.

 

James William Hazelwood
Mr. James William Hazelwood, 65, of 1140 Mt. Laurel Road, Clover died
Wednesday, March 5, 2008 at Halifax Regional Hospital.  He was born in
Halifax County on March 14, 1942, a son of the late William T.
Hazelwood and Ellis Martin Hazelwood and was a retired dairy farmer.
He is survived by three sisters, Margaret Seamster of Skipwith, Carrie
Wilmouth and Mary Newcomb, both of Clover; three brothers, Sam
Hazelwood of South Boston, Ronald Hazelwood and Roger Hazelwood, both
of Clover.
Funeral services were held Sunday, March 9 at Church of God of Prophecy
with Rev. Stephen Byrd and Rev. Courtney Coffer officiating.  Burial
followed in the church cemetery.

 

Cynthia Dixon Guthrie
Mrs. Cynthia Dixon Guthrie, 42, of 1725 Burtis Avenue, South Boston
died Wednesday, March 6, 2008 at Halifax Regional Hospital.  She was
born in Halifax County on June 22, 1965, a daughter of Reverend William
Dixon and Mrs. Thelma Brooks Dixon.  She was married to Mr. David A.
Guthrie and was a member of First Baptist Church, Ferry Street.
In addition to her parents and husband, she is survived by one
daughter, Dominique Nicole Guthrie of South Boston; one brother, Mr.
William Dixon, Jr. and wife Sharon of Richmond; her maternal
grandparents, Mr. John and Gracie Brooks of South Boston; her paternal
grandfather, Mr. George Coleman of Java; her mother-in-law, Mrs. Gladys
Harris and husband Sonny of Scottsburg; her father-in-law, Mr. Peter
Guthrie of South Boston; two nieces, two nephews, other relatives and
friends.  She was preceded in death by one sister, Deborah Dixon and
her grandmother, Dora Coleman.
Funeral services were held Sunday, March 9 at First Baptist Church,
Ferry Street with Rev. Wallace Pierce officiating.  Burial followed in
Oak Ridge Cemetery.

 

Henry P. Lipscomb, Jr
Mr. Henry P. Lipscomb, Jr. of New York, NY, formerly of Halifax County,
died March 4, 2008 in Flushing, New York at the age of 90. Born in
Halifax County on July 22, 1917, he was the son of the late Mr. Henry
P. Lipscomb, Sr. and Mrs. Susie Cunningham Lipscmb. He was a graduate
of Virginia State University and later attended New York Law School
where he graduated in 1942. For many years, he practiced law along with
his father in Jamaica, NY. In 1948 he was appointed Assistant Attorney
General of New York State where he retired in 1977.
Mr. Lipscomb is survived by his daughter and son-in-law, Mrs. Michele
Holland and her husband Robert of Orlando, FL, his grandchildren, Ms.
Rashida A. Holland of Tallahassee, FL and Mr. Kiar J. Holland of Miami,
FL, a sister, Mrs. Virginia L. Stringnano of Plantation FL, his
cousins, Mr. Tonnie Villines and family of Richmond, Mrs. Sally Saumels
and family of South Boston, Ms. Ramona Bell and family of Philadelphia,
PA, Ms. Irma Wigingham and family of North Carolina and the Crawley
family of South Boston.
A funeral service for Mr. Lipscmb will be conducted on Monday, March 10
at 3 p.m. at Crossroads Baptist Church in Turbeville with the Rev. John
T. Hubbard officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. The
fmamly will receive friends at the church on Monday.

 

Etta Melinda King Martin
Mrs. Etta Melinda King Martin of South Boston died Friday, March 7,
2008 at Halifax Regional Hospital. Born in Charlotte County on January
3, 1920, she was 88 at the time of her death. She was a daughter of the
late Joseph King and Minnie Newcomb King and was married to the late
Leonard George Martin. She was a member of the Church of God of
Prophesy.
Mrs. Martin is survived by four daughters, Ruth M. Smith and husband
Vernon and Edna S. Martin and husband Andrew, all of Chase City, Lessie
M. Hazelwood and husband James of Alton and Louise M. Womack of Crystal
Hill, eighteen great grandchildren and six great grandchildren. Also
surviving are a sister, Virginia Bridges of Greenville and a brother
Elgie King of Scottsburg. She was preceded in death by a daughter,
Mildred Hazelwood, a grandson, Marvin Wayne Cash, three brothers,
Louis, John and Paul King and two sisters, Hattie McCloud and Sarah
Duffie.
A graveside service was held Sunday, March 9 at 2 p.m. at Halifax
Memorial Gardens with the Rev. Frank Baldwin officiating.

 

Nancy Norman Henderson,
Mrs. Nancy Norman Henderson, formerly of Grubby Road, Halifax died
March 7, 2008 at the home of her son in Oxford, NC. She was born
November 9, 1922 in South Boston and was 85 at the time of her death.
She was a daughter of the late Warner W. Norman and Mary Lena Rye
Norman and was married to the late Robert Neal Henderson, Sr. She was a
former employee of the Halifax Cotton Mill and was a member of St.
John's Episcopal Church where she was a member of the Altar Society.
Mrs. Henderson is survived by three sons, Robert N. Henderson, Jr. and
wife, Ellie of Oxford, NC, William "Bill" Henderson and wife Patsy of
Halifax and Gary Lee Henderson and wife, Arlene of Gladys and four
grandchildren, Tammy Smith of Chase City, Heather Schneck of
Kernersville, NC and Gary Henderson, Jr. and Amber Henderson, both of
Lynchburg and three great grandchildren. Also surviving are three
sisters, Gladys Cavanaugh, Virginia Patterson and Elizabeth Thaxton,
all of South Boston and two brothers, Walter Norman of Bracey and Bruce
Norman of South Boston. She was preceded in  death by a son, Charles
Edward Henderson and two sisters, Mary Lena Satterfield and Sara Gibson
and by two brothers, Warner "Dub" Norman and A. G. Norman.
A graveside service was held Sunday, March 9 at 3 p.m. at St. John's
Episcopal Church with the Rev. Jack Nietert officiating. The family is
receiving friends at the home of her sister, Elizabeth Thaxton, 510
Forest Drive, South Boston and at the home of her son, Billy Henderson,
1016 Woodgrove Trail, Halifax. For memorials please consider the St.

Dorothy Jane Harris Sims
Mrs. Dorothy Jane Harris Sims of Edmunds Street, South Boston died
Friday, March 7, 2008 at Halifax Regional Hospital at the age of 79.
Mrs. Sims was born in Halifax County on September 1, 1928 and was the
daughter of the late Mr. George Harris and Mrs. Eva Jane Wiley Harris.
She was married to Mr. George Stover Sims, Sr. and was a member of
Crossroad Baptist Church.
Mrs. Sims is survived by her husband of the home, a daughter, Mrs.
Sarah Jones of Hyatsville, MD, four sons, Mr. Charles W. Sims of South
Boston, Mr. George S. Sims. Jr. of Milton, NC, Mr. Edward L. Sims and
Mr. Raymond E. Sims, both of South Boston, eight grandchildren one
great grandchild, three sisters, Mrs. Euna Britton and Mrs. Ester
Bryant, both of Baltimore, MD and Mrs. Sarah Marable of Hampton, two
brothers, Mr. Lewis Harris of Alton and Mr. Thomas Harris of Paterson,
NJ, a son-in-law, four daughters-in-law, and a host of nieces, nephews,
other relatives and friends including the devoted Mrs. Mildred Brandon.
In addition to her parents Mrs. Sims was preceded in death by two
brothers, Mr. William Harris and Mr. George Harris.
A funeral service for Mrs. Sims will be held Wednesday, March 12 at 2
p.m. at the Crossroad Baptist Church with the Rev. John T. Hubbard
officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. The family will
be receiving friends at the residence, 321 Edmunds Street, South
Boston.
