Obituaries

Ardelia Ann Oliver Fields
Mrs. Ardelia Ann Oliver Fields, 97, of 5158 Philpott Road, South Boston
died Saturday, March 1, 2008 in Fayetteville, NC.  She was born in
Halifax County on April 11, 1910, a daughter of the late Mr. William
Huel Oliver and Mrs. Pearl Bland Oliver.  She was married to the late
Mr. Bailey John Fields, Sr. and was a member of Crossroad Baptist
Church.
She is survived by three sons, Mr. Bailey J. Fields, Jr. of
Fayetteville, NC, Mr. William Robinson of Queens, NY and Mr. Paul
Hodges of Brooklyn, NY; one god-daughter, Mrs. Juanita Hinton of
Newport News; four grandchildren, Marquita A. Fields, Bailey J. Fields,
III, Evelyn Robinson and Cynthia Robinson; other relatives and friends.
  She was preceded in death by three sisters, Mrs. Grace Daniel, Mrs.
Hazel Thompson and Mrs. Francis Oliver and one brother, Mr. William
Oliver.
Funeral services will be held today at 2:00 p.m. at Crossroad Baptist
Church with Rev. Nelson Stamps officiating.  Burial will follow in the
church cemetery.

 

Mr. Bassie C. Barbour
Mr. Bassie C. Barbour, 90, of Maryland, formerly of Nathalie, died
February 26, 2008 in Takoma Park, MD.  He was the son of the late Mr.
Bossie and Mrs. Lizzie Barbour and was married to Mrs. Roxie A.
Barbour.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by a son, Marshall Barbour
(Shirley), two daughters, Annie Barbour and Mattie Hill (Damon); two
grandchildren, Arlene Butler (Kenny) and Monica Barbour; three
great-grandchildren, Janee Brooks, Andra Brooks, Donovan Hill, all of
Maryland; one sister, Mrs. Violet Lane of Wilmington, DE; other
relatives and friends.
Funeral services were held Tuesday, March 4 at Jeffress Funeral Home,
Brookneal, with Bishop Anthony Miller officiating.  Burial followed in
the Barbour Family Cemetery, Nathalie.
 
Mrs. Reva Elliott Jones
Mrs. Reva Elliott Jones, 94, of 1015 Crestview Trail, South Boston died
Sunday, March 2, 2008 at her home.  She was born in Gretna on August
29, 1913, a daughter of the late Vincent and Sallie Elliott and was
married to the late Walter McKinley Jones.  She was a member of Harmony
United Methodist Church and attended Glenwood United Methodist Church.
She is survived by one son, Ronnie Jones of South Boston; one daughter,
LaJanice J. Sizemore of South Boston; one brother, Millard Elliott of
Danville; a granddaughter, Merry Lynn Styles and two great-grandsons,
Matthew Styles and Paul Styles.
Funeral services were held Wednesday, March 5 at Brooks Funeral Home
with Rev. Bob Woodfin officiating.  Burial followed in Oak Ridge
Cemetery.

 

James Still "Skinny" Vaughan
Mr. James Still "Skinny" Vaughan, 71, of 3115 Jones Ferry Road, South
Boston died Tuesday, March 4, 2008 at Halifax Regional Hospital.  He
was born in Halifax County on July 20, 1936, son of the late Walter
Smith Vaughan and Katie Wilmouth Still Vaughan and was married to June
Clardy Vaughan.  He was a member of Mountain Road Baptist Church where
he was a former deacon.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by two daughters, Janet Vaughan
Carlton and husband Travis of Powhatan and Catherine Vaughan Crews and
husband Keith of Halifax; two sons, James Still Vaughan, Jr. of South
Boston, Charles Edward "Eddie" Vaughan and wife Susan of South Boston;
five grandchildren, Vince Conner, Ashley Conner, Katie and Keith Crews,
Peyton Vaughan.  He was preceded in death by two brothers, Walter Smith
Vaughan, Jr. and William Joseph Vaughan.
Funeral services will be held Friday, March 7 at 2:00 p.m. at Mountain
Road Baptist Church with Rev. Andy Patterson officiating.  Burial will
follow in the church cemetery.  The family will receive friends tonight
from 7:00-8:30 p.m. at Powell Funeral Home.  Memorials may be directed

Glen Obie Womack
Mr. Glen Obie Womack, 56, of 1215 Waltman Trail, Vernon Hill died
Monday, March 3, 2008 at Halifax Regional Hospital.  He was born in
Halifax County on July 3, 1951, a son of Mr. Onzie Obie Womack and the
late Mrs. Mary Edmonds Womack.  He was a member of New Vernon Baptist
Church.
In addition to his father, he is survived by two sisters, Mrs. Emma
Sutphin of Newport News and Mrs. Grindle Martin of Halifax; four
brothers, Mr. Onzie Womack, Jr. of Vernon Hill, Mr. Robert Womack, Mr.
James Womack and Mr. John Womack, all of Halifax; one brother-in-law,
Mr. Charles Martin; three sisters-in-law, Mrs. Mary Womack, Mrs.
Barbara Womack and Mrs. Deborah Womack; a devoted friend, Ms. Nancy
Kirby; other relatives and friends.
Funeral services will be held Saturday, March 8 at 1:00 p.m. at New
Vernon Baptist Church with Elder William Howerton officiating.  Burial
will follow in the church cemetery.  The family will receive friends at
the home.

 

Mary Texanna Andrews
Miss Mary Texanna Andrews of 12007 Mountain Road, Vernon Hill died
Wednesday, March 5, 2008 at Berry Hill Nursing Home. Born October 9,
1932 she was the daughter of Miller Ragsdale Andrews and Thelma Whitlow
Andrews. She was a member of the Mount Vernon Baptist Church.
Miss Andrews is survived by a sister, Ruth A. Rutherford and husband
James of Vernon Hill.
A graveside service for Miss Andrews will be held Saturday, March 8 at
2 p.m. at Mount Vernon Baptist Church cemetery with the Rev. Bill
Wilkins officiating. The family will receive friends at the home 12007
Mountain Road, Vernon Hill. For memorials please consider the Oak Level
Voluteer Fire Department, c/o Jerry Moore 2080 Swain Road, Halifax
