Obituaries

Gertrude B. Wilkerson
 
Mrs. Gertrude Buchanan Wilkerson of 1184 Alphonse Dairy Road, South
Boston died Friday, February 29, 2008 at her home. Born in Dinwiddie
County on October 8, 1913, she was 94 at the time of her death. She was
a member of Mountain Creek Baptist Church in Cornwall, NC and was a
retiree of Sales Knitting Company. She had also worked as a sitter.
Mrs. Wilkerson is survived by three daughters, Mary Lavern Humphries of
Roxboro, NC, Nell B. Thaxton and Willie B. Wilson, both of South Boston
and a son, Paige T. Buchanan, also of South Boston, 17 grandchildren,
24 great grandchildren, eight step great grandchildren, three great
great grandchildren and three step great great grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her first husband, Oscar Paige Buchanan
and her second husband, Ike Wilkerson, her parents, Charlie Ladd and
Hallie Shotwell Ladd, two sons, Oscar C. Buchanan and Thomas Edison
Buchanan, a sister, five brothers and a grandson, Kenneth Ray Wilson.
A funeral service for Mrs. Wilkerson was conducted on Sunday, March 2
at 3 p.m. at Brooks Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Lamar Wheeler
officiating. Burial followed in the Virgilina Cemetery. The family
requests that in lieu of flowers memorials be made to the Halifax
County Cancer Association, P. O. Box 875, South Boston, VA 24592.
 
Hal Isaac Barksdale
 
Mr. Hal Isaac Barksdale of Alder Trail, South Boston died Saturday,
March 1 at Halifax Regional Hospital at the age of 45. Born in Halifax
County on March 5, 1962, he was the son of the late Mr. Howard Daniel
Barksdale and Mrs. Ida Venable Barksdale. He was married to Mrs. Rosa
Clay Barksdale and was a member of the First Baptist Church of News
Ferry.
Mr. Barksdale is survived by his wife of the home, two brothers, Mr.
Frank G. Ballou of South Boston and Mr. Howard I. Barksdale of
Baltimore, MD, a sister, Mrs. Ruby B. Leigh of Halifax, three
brothers-in-law, Rev. Louis S. Leigh, Sr., Mr. Freddie Clay and Mr.
Larry Clay, five sisters-in-law, Ms. Rebecca Ballou, Ms. Carolyn
Ballou, Ms. Mary Traynham, Ms. Shirley Clay and Ms. Elsie Clay, a step
daughter, Ms. Brandie Richardson, two step grandchildren, three aunts,
Mrs. Josephine Logan, Mrs. Myrtle Carter and Mrs. Amanda Dorsey, an
uncle, Mr. Morrell Garner and a host of nieces, nephews, other
relatives and friends including the devoted Mr Earl Hart.
A funeral service for Mr. Barksdale will be held Wednesday, March 5 at
1 p.m. at First Baptist Church of News Ferry with Rev. Ronnie King
officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
Public viewing for family and friends will be Tuesday, March 4 from 10
a.m. until 8 p.m. at the Crawford House Chapel in Halifax and the
family will be receiving friends at the home of Rev. and Mrs. Louis S.
Leigh, 2230 Mountain Road, Halifax.
Myrtle Lee
Satterfield
 
Myrtle Lee Satterfield of 103 Rosehill Drive, South Boston died Sunday,
March 2, 2008 at The Woodview. Born July 3, 1920 in Halifax County, she
was 87 at the time of her death. She was a member of Olive Branch
United Methodist Church and was a homemaker.
Ms. Satterfield is survived by a sister, Sallie S. Carter of Halifax
and two brothers, Keith T. Satterfield and Wilson Satterfield, both of
Alton and a number of nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her
parents, Samuel Elam Satterfield and Sallie Fannie Carter Satterfield.
Graveside services for Ms. Satterfield will be conducted on Monday,
March 3 at 11 a.m. at Olive Branch UMC Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Olive Branch UMC
Cemetery Fund, Turbeville Volunteer Fire Department or the Halifax

Laura Torrence Rutledge
 
Mrs. Laura Torrence Rutledge of 2066 Cole Lane, Scottsburg died March
1, 2008 at her home. Born in Campbell County on September 25, 1917, she
was 90 at the time of her death. She was the daughter of the late
Charlie Torrence and Eunice Hendricks Torrence and was married to the
late Andrew Dall Rutledge, Sr. She was a member of the New Chapel
Baptist Church of Rustburg.
Mrs. Rutledge is survived by two daughters, Carolyn Jean Rutledge Clark
and husband Rayford of Phenix and Linda Marie Rutledge Crosby and
husband, William L. of Scottsburg and one son, Andrew Dall Rutledge,
Jr.  and wife Linda of Long Island, a step daughter, Margaret ÒTillieÓ
Rutledge Marshall of Raleigh, NC, two sisters, Mary Jane Wilmouth of
Rustburg and Joyce Ernest of Lynchburg, a brother, Lyle Torrence of
Lynchburg, seven grandchildren, Diane Clark Miller of Morrisville, NC,
Jason Wayne Clark of Phenix, Cynthia ÒCindyÓ  Brown and Courtney Andrew
Crosby, both of Halifax, Christopher Lee Crosby of Scottsburg, Christy
Reynolds and Megan Rutledge, both of Long Island, three great
grandchildren, Ashleigh Nicole Foster and Whitney Marie Foster, both of
Halifax and Hunter Reynolds of Long Island.
A funeral service for Mrs. Rutledge will be conducted Tuesday, March 4
at 2 p.m. at New Chapel Baptist Church, Rustburg. Burial will follow in
the church cemetery. Visitation will be held at Powell Funeral Home
Monday evening from 7 until 8:30 p.m. and at other times at her home,
2066 Cole Lane, Scottsburg.
 
Jerry Dee Ballou
 
Mr. Jerry Dee Ballou of Logan Road, Java, died Thursday, February 28,
2008 at Halifax Regional Hospital at the age of 43.Born in Halifax
County on March 10, 1964, he was the son of the late Mr. Prunious D.
Ballou and Mrs. Beverly Rosa Edmonds Ballou. He was a member of the
Peaceful Tabernacle Baptist Church.
Mr. Ballou is survived by two sisters, Ms. Brenda Ballou of Alton and
Ms. Carolyn Ballou of South Boston, two brothers, Mr. Perry Ballou of
Clarksville and Mr. Lawrence Ballou of South Boston and a host of
nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
A graveside service for Mr. Ballou will be held Tuesday, March 4 at 11
a.m. at the Peaceful Tabernacle Baptist Church cemetery with the Rev.
Jackie Stamps officiating. The family will receive friends at the
gravesite on Tuesday.
