Mrs. Hazel Winn Carmichael,
Mrs. Hazel Winn Carmichael, 77, of 3009 Cherry Hill Church Road,
South
Boston died Sunday, February 17, 2008 at Halifax Regional Hospital.
She was born in Roxboro, NC on January 15, 1931, a daughter of the
late
George Edward Winn and Mattie Slaughter Winn and was married to the
late Harry J. Carmichael. She was a member of Mount Cana United
Methodist Church and was a homemaker.
She is survived by two daughters, Katherine C. Whitt and husband
Warren
of South Boston, Joan C. Benson of Roanoke; brothers, George Winn,
Jr.,
Charles Winn and Billy Winn, all of Richmond; sisters, Frances
Jackson
of Chase City, Barbara Jean Wade of Bumpass and Gloria Winn; six
grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were held Wednesday, February 20 at Brooks Funeral
Home Chapel with Rev. Dana Mitchell Cook officiating. Burial
followed
in Shady Grove U.M.C. Cemetery. Memorials may be directed to the
American Diabetes Association, P.O. Box 2680, North Canton, OH
44720.
Mr. Thomas Kent McDowell
Mr. Thomas Kent McDowell, Sr., 87, of Chatham Road, Vernon Hill died
Monday, February 18, 2008 at Halifax Regional Hospital. He was born
in
Halifax County on September 12, 1920, a son of the late Alvin Walker
McDowell, Sr. and Hester Kent McDowell and was married for over 65
years to Dorothy Reaves McDowell. He was a member of County Line
Baptist Church where he was a deacon, Sunday school teacher and past
Superintendent; was a former member of the Halifax County School
Board,
having served for over 25 years. He was a tobacco and cattle farmer
as
well as owner/operator of a tobacco warehouse and was a World War II
Navy Veteran.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by two daughters, Patricia
M.
Taylor and husband Robert of Honaker, Betsy M. Nissley and husband
Dennis of Crozet; two sons, Thomas Kent McDowell, Jr. and wife
Phyllis,
and Michael H. McDowell and wife Wanda, all of Vernon Hill; nine
grandchildren, Thomas Brian Taylor, Anne Marie Gillespie, Kevin Wade
Toms, Kent Wilson Toms, Gregory Kent McDowell, Melissa Denise
Colwell,
Angela Diane Collins, Bridget Ellen McDowell, Michael Weston
McDowell;
seven great-grandchildren, two step-grandchildren, Brian Dale
Tanksley
and Brandon Drew Tanksley and three step-great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were held Wednesday, February 20 at County Line
Baptist Church with Rev. Dr. John Campbell and Rev. Doug Gibson
officiating. Burial followed in the church cemetery with Military
Rites. Memorials may be directed to the County Line Baptist Church,
13146 Chatham Road, Java, VA 24565.
Sara Newcomb Bridges
Sara Newcomb Bridges, 33, of 2201 Buckshoal Road, Virgilina died
Sunday, February 17, 2008. She was born in Halifax County on
October
14, 1974, a daughter of Carl Newcomb of Virgilina and the late Jane
Walker Newcomb. She was of the Baptist faith and a homemaker.
In addition to her father, she is survived by her husband, Jeffrey
Bridges of South Boston; a daughter, Sierra Nicole Williams of
Texas;
sons, Dakota Wayne Williams of Virgilina, Lane Neal Bridges and
Hunter
Dale Bridges, both of South Boston.
Funeral services will be held today at 2:00 p.m. at Brooks Funeral
Home
Chapel with Rev. Jack Stewart officiating. Burial will follow in
Oak
Ridge Cemetery.
Victor Carrington Self
Victor Carrington Self, Jr., 37, of 9593 Hwy. 96N, Oxford, NC died
Sunday, February 17, 2008. He was born in Harrisburg, PA on
September
8, 1970, a son of Brenda Price Self of Virgilina and the late Victor
Carrington Self, Sr.
In addition to his mother, he is survived by his grandmother, Etta
D.
Price of Virgilina; sister, Tracy Self Greenway of Oxford, NC;
niece,
Brittany Bowling and nephew, Dylan Bowling; and girlfriend,
Charlotte
Wilborn of Clover
Funeral services will be held today at 2:00 p.m. at Calvary Baptist
Church with interment in Virgilina Cemetery. Memorials may be

Winnie Wilborn Newby
Winnie Wilborn Newby, 84, of 1062 Wallace Cole Road, South Boston
died
Tuesday, February 19, 2008 at Halifax Regional Hospital. She was
born
in Halifax County on July 6, 1923, a daughter of the late Herbert
Wilborn and Lillie Conner Wilborn and was married to the late Walter
Lee Newby. She was a member of Ash Avenue Baptist Church and was a
retired employee of J.P. Stevens.
She is survived by sisters Lula Wilborne of South Boston and Betty
Wazeka and husband Bobby of South Boston and a number of nieces and
nephews. She was preceded in death by sisters Margaret Bane, Martha
Newby, Janie Sue Frazier and Barbara Puryear and a brother, William
Wilborn.
Funeral services will be held today at 4:00 p.m. at Brooks Funeral
Home
Chapel with Rev. John Eure officiating. Burial will follow in Oak
Ridge Cemetery.
Mr. Jerry Andre Boyd
Mr. Jerry Andre Boyd, 47, of Clover, died Saturday, February 16,
2008
at Halifax Regional Hospital. He was born in Baltimore, MD on May
19,
1960, son of Mr. Sandy Boyd and Mrs. Mary Wooden Boyd and was a
member
of St. Matthew Baptist Church.
In addition to his parents, he is survived by one son, Mr. Darius
Jones; four brothers, Mr. Gabriel Wooden of Danville, Mr. Eric Boyd,
Mr. Carl Boyd and Mr. Paul Boyd, all of Baltimore, MD; one sister,
Mrs.
Marcia Boyd Cox; one brother-in-law, Mr. Anthony Cox; one
sister-in-law, Mrs. Debra Wooden; other relatives and friends.
Funeral services will be held today at 12:00 noon at St. Matthew
Baptist Church with Rev. Alfred L. Chandler officiating. Burial
will
follow in the church cemetery.
Mr. Joseph Lovelace Tucker
Mr. Joseph Lovelace Tucker, 56, of 1056 Fox Lane, Nathalie died
Monday,
February 18, 2008. He was born in Halifax County on October 24,
1951,
son of Mrs. Emma Lovelace Tucker and the late Mr. Joseph Tucker. He
was a United States Army Veteran.
In addition to his mother, he is survived by one son, Mr. Kevin
Davis
of Amherst; one sister, Mrs. Thelma Stovall of Dover, DE; two
brothers,
Mr. Willie Tucker of Wilmington, DE and Mr. Arthur Tucker of Dover,
DE;
three grandchildren, two great-grandchildren; three
step-grandchildren;
one daughter-in-law, Mrs. Deana Davis; three sisters-in-law, Mrs.
Rosa
Lee Tucker, Mrs. Ann Tucker and Mrs. Sarah Tucker; one
brother-in-law,
Mr. Augusta Stovall; one aunt, a devoted friend Ms. Ann Womack of
Halifax; other relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by
two
brothers, Mr. Roy Tucker and Mr. Clarence Tucker.
Funeral services will be held Saturday, February 23 at 2:00 p.m. at
Crawford House Chapel with Rev. Chester Spruill officiating. Burial
will follow in Millstone Baptist Church Cemetery with military rites
by
American Legion Post 99. The family will receive friends Friday
from
10:00 a.m.-8:00 p.m. at Crawford House, Halifax.
Mrs. Elizabeth Margaret Weatherford Barksdale
Mrs. Elizabeth Margaret Weatherford Barksdale, 84, of 1027 Barksdale
Drive, Halifax died Thursday, February 14, 2008 at her home. She
was
born in North Carolina on October 24, 1924, a daughter of the late
Luther Cole Weatherford and Jenette "Nettie" Marshall
Weatherford. She
was married to the late Thomas Hula Barksdale and was a member of
Mt.
Vernon Baptist Church.
She is survived by one daughter, Nancy B. Francis of Halifax; one
son,
Ray Barksdale of Halifax; six grandchildren and 13
great-grandchildren;
three brothers, Clifton Weatherford of Danville, Billy Weatherford
of
Martinsville, James Weatherford of Halifax; four sisters, Lottie
Farmer
and Helen Mitchell, both of Danville, Dolly Richardson of Halifax
and
Joan Barker of Danville. She was preceded in death by two brothers,
Earl and Calvin Weatherford and three sisters, Annie Ladd, Mabel
Edmunds and Gladys Mayes.
Funeral services were held Sunday, February 17 at Powell Funeral

Halifax
Memorial Gardens.
Mr. Eddie "Billy" Penick.
Mr.Eddie "Billy" Penick, 64, of Brooklyn, NY, formerly of Halifax
County,
died in New York. He was born February 22, 1943 in Halifax County,
a
son of the late Mr. George C. Penick and Mrs. Lillian Chandler
Penick.
He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Diane Penick; one daughter, Ms.
Gwendolyn Penick of Glen Burnie, MD; one son, Mr. Tyson Penick of
Amityville, NY; four brothers, General Grand Chandler, Mr. William
Penick, Mr. Alexander Penick, Mr. Charles Penick, all of Halifax;
four
sisters, Ms. Dorothy Penick of Brooklyn, NY, Mrs. Ernestine Phillip
of
Queens, NY, Mrs. Denise Stewart of Clover and Mrs. Leola Carden of
Georgia; two grandchildren, a devoted sister-in-law Mrs. Sofia
Henderson, other relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by
two brothers, Mr. John Henry Chandler and Mr. James Chandler and one
sister, Mrs. Edith Croker.
Funeral services were held Wednesday, February 20 in New York.
