Obituaries

Mr. Thomas George Sydnor

Mr. Thomas George Sydnor of Colorado Street, Virgilina died February
12, 2008 at his home at the age of 54. Born in Washington, DC on
November 3, 1954, he was the son of Mr. Alvah Thomas Sydnor and Mrs.
Corinne Great Sydnor. He was employed by the Halifax County Public
Schools. For many years Mr. Sydnor lived in Northern Virginia where he
was employed by the Fairfax County Public Schools.
Mr. Sydnor is survived by his parents of Atlantic Beach, NC, a sister,
Karen Dudding of Gainesville, FL, two nephews, Dallas Dudding of
Stafford and Darryl Dudding of Tampa, FL and a niece, Karla Dudding-Nix
of Lexington, KY.
A memorial service for Mr. Sydnor will be conducted on Monday, February
18 at 11 a.m. at Union Christian Church in Virgilina.
 
 Mr. Jack Carter
Mr. Jack Carter, 48, of Roanoke, formerly of Halifax County, died
Tuesday, February 12, 2008 at Roanoke Memorial Hospital.  He was born
in Halifax County on February 3, 1960, a son of the late Mr. William
Lester Carter and Mrs. May Emma Petty Carter.
He is survived by one son, Mr. Justin Hamlett of South Boston; one
sister, Ms. Elizabeth Carter of South Boston; two grandchildren,
Trevion Hamlett and Jada Hamlett; four nephews, other relatives and
friends.  He was preceded in death by two brothers, Mr. Andrew Carter
and Mr. Galore Carter and one grandchild, Jamarcus Hamlett.
Funeral services were private.
 Mr. Kenneth Carlyle Lacks
Mr. Kenneth Carlyle Lacks, 42, of 1020 Woods Creek Lane, Scottsburg
died Thursday, February 14, 2008 at UVA Medical Center.  He was born in
Halifax County on April 15, 1965, a son of Bea Guill Lacks and Marlow
Lacks of South Boston.  He was a member of Grace Baptist Church and a
carpenter working with Sterling and Michael Lacks.
In addition to his parents, he is survived by a daughter, Kristin
Amanda Lacks of South Boston; a son, Daniel Steven Lacks of South
Boston; one sister, Donna L. McCann of Virgilina; one brother, Rickie
K. Lacks of Ringgold; his fiance', Angela Seamster and her children,
Kelly Wayne, Heather and Jonathan and her granddaughter, Karli.
Funeral services were held Saturday, February 16 at Grace Baptist
Church with Rev. Jack Stewart and Rev. Dave Cline officiating.  Burial
followed in the church cemetery.  Memorials may be directed to the
Halifax County Cancer Association, P.O. Box 875, South Boston, VA
24592.
 Mrs. Elizabeth Margaret Weatherford
Mrs. Elizabeth Margaret Weatherford, 84, of 1027 Barksdale Drive,
Halifax died Thursday, February 14, 2008 at her home.  She was born in
North Carolina on October 24, 1924, a daughter of the late Luther Cole
Weatherford and Jenette "Nettie" Marshall Weatherford.  She was married
to the late Thomas Hula Barksdale and a member of Mt. Vernon Baptist
Church.
She is survived by one daughter, Nancy B. Francis of Halifax; one son,
Ray Barksdale of Halifax; six grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren;
three brothers, Clifton Weatherford of Danville, Billy Weatherford of
Martinsville, James Weatherford of Halifax; four sisters, Lottie Farmer
and Helen Mitchell, both of Danville, Dolly Richardson of Halifax and
Joan Barker of Danville.  She was preceded in death by two brothers,
Earl and Calvin Weatherford and three sisters, Annie Ladd, Mabel
Edmunds and Gladys Mayes.
Funeral services were held Sunday, February 17 at Powell Funeral Home
Chapel with Rev. Jeaux Simmons officiating.  Burial followed in Halifax
Memorial Gardens.
 
 Mrs. Priscilla Jordan
Mrs. Priscilla Jordan, 43, wife of Emmett Jordan, died Friday, February
15, 2008 at Halifax Regional Hospital.  The daughter of Carolyn G.
Winstead of Clarksville and Jay Deal of South Boston, Priscilla was a
graduate of Bluestone High School.  She had worked in retail and most
recently was a private duty nurse.
Funeral services were held Sunday at Buffalo Baptist Church, of which
she was a member, with the Reverends Jim McAlister and Gregory Thomas
officiating.  Interment followed in the church cemetery.
In addition to her husband and parents, Priscilla is survived by
daughters, Sarah and Samantha Jordan and son, Jonathan Jordan, all of
Nelson.  She is also survived by brothers, Tony Deal of Virgilina,
Chris Deal of South Boston, and Ronnie Winstead of Skipwith.
 
 Stanley D. Whitt
Stanley D. Whitt, 47, of Knightdale, NC, died February 16, 2008, after
a short but brave battle with pancreatic cancer. Born June 21, 1960, in
South Boston, Virginia, he was a graduate of Danville Community
College, Danville, Virginia and James Madison University, Harrisonburg,
Virginia.  He was employed by RBC Centura as a Delivery Systems Data
Manager.
Stan served his community as a member of the Knightdale Land Use Review
Board for seven years, and was active as a coach for his children's
sports teams in the Knightdale Parks and Recreation Leagues for many
years.  He was an avid sports fan and enjoyed playing golf and third
base for the St. James United Methodist Church softball team for many
years.
He was preceded in death by his maternal and paternal grandparents and
his brother Michael.
He is survived by his wife of 22 years, Ellen and his children Eric and
Meredith all of the home.  He is also survived by his parents, Lacy and
Joyce Whitt, and his sister and brother-in-law Becky and Ricky
Hutcherson, all of South Boston, Virginia.  He is also survived by his
niece Shawn Short and her husband Eric their children Patrick and
Brooklyn, Nathalie, Virginia.  He also leaves behind many great
friends, his golfing buddies and the members of his college fraternity,
Theta Chi.
We would like to extend our gratitude and thanks to the residents of
his hometown, South Boston, Virginia, the members of St. James United
Methodist Church, Raleigh, NC, the members of Trinity United Methodist
Church, Raleigh, NC, the employees of RBC Centura and the residents of
the Green Pines neighborhood, Knightdale, NC, for their unwavering
prayers and support during the last 5 1/2 months.
A memorial service will be held at 11:00 a.m., Monday, February 18,
2008, at St. James United Methodist Church, 3808 St. James Church Rd.,
Raleigh, NC, 27604 with visitation following in the church fellowship
hall.

 Mrs. Mary Lizzie Gooch
  Mrs. Mary Lizzie Gooch, 89, of Clarksville entered eternal rest
Thursday, February 14, 2008 at Chase City Nursing and Rehabilitation,
Chase City.
Mrs. Gooch was born in Mecklenburg County, on June 7, 1918 to the late
James and Hallie Carter Royster. She attended the schools of
Mecklenburg County and was a member of New Liberty Baptist Church,
Clarksville. She was a homemaker who enjoyed quilting, pets walking and
fishing.
Mrs. Gooch was preceded in death by her husband, Roy Gooch Sr., two
sons, Isadore and Larvester Gooch and one daughter, Doretha Gooch
Morse.
Cherishing her memories are three sons, Roy Gooch Jr., and Ricky White
both of Clarksville,  and Rev. William Gooch Hicks of Richmond; three
grandchildren, Rodney Gooch, Isadore Brown and Tonya Gooch Hawkins;
five great-grandchildren, one sister-in-law, Bertha Royster of
Summerton, SC; two daughters-in-law, Joyce and Shirley Gooch, one
devoted nephew, Arthur Royster and a vast number of other loving
relatives and caring friends.
Funeral services for Mrs. Gooch will be conducted 1:00 P.M. Tuesday,
February 19, 2008 at the chapel of C.H. Harris Funeral Home and
Cremation Service, Clarksville with Rev. H.F. Peace, officiating.
Burial will follow in New Liberty Baptist Church Cemetery, Clarksville.

 Mrs. Frances J. Naeyaert
Mrs. Frances J. Naeyaert, 85, a long time resident of Bonita Springs,
passed away Thursday, February 14, 2008 after a brief illness. She had
been a resident of Bonita Springs since 1957 coming from LaPeer,
Michigan. She was born January 1, 1923 in Detroit, MI, a daughter of
the late Joseph and Marie (nee Yeschner) Mayberger. She was the wife of
the late Raymond E. Naeyaert  who passed away in 1992. She was a former
volunteer for the Clean-Up Bonita campaign.
Survivors include her son, David (Joyce) Naeyaert, the ìCinnamon Roll
Bun Man,î of Bonita Springs, FL, two daughters, Sherry (Omar) Botana of
Estero, FL and Lorraine Healey of Spartenburg, SC, two brothers, Edwrad
Mayberger and Harold Mayberger, both of Deroit, one sister, Lucille
Vance, also of Detroit, nine grandchildren and five great
grandchildren.
A funeral service will be held Tuesday, February 19 at 1 p.m. at Walter
Shikanyís Bonita Funeral Home, 28300 Tamiami Trail with Rev. Hugh J.
McGuigan, pastor of Our Lady of Light Catholic Community, officiating.
Burial will follow in Naples Memorial Gardens. In lieu of flowers,
memorials are suggested to Joanneís House of Hope Hospice, 372000
Imperial Pkwy, Bonita Springs FL 34135.

 

 Mr. Charlie Martin Hogg
Mr. Charlie Martin Hogg, Jr. of 621 Berry Hill Road, South Boston died
Sunday, February 17, 2008 at Halifax Regional Hospital. Born on October
15, 1946 in Everett, WA, he was 61 at the time of his death.
He is survived by three brothers, David Hogg of Warner Robins, GA,
Timothy Hogg of Florida and Ricky Hogg of Nathalie and a sister, Janice
Williams of Cary, NC. He was preceded in death by his parents, Charlie
M. Hogg, Sr. and Peggy  Georginia Whittingham Hogg and two sisters,
Sherry Hogg and Lori Hogg.
A private service will be held in Georgia at a later date. The family
requests that in lieu of flowers, memorials be made to the Southside

Mr. Wyatt McGellan Poindexter, age 71 of Nathalie, died February 14,
2008 in South Boston. He was the son of the late Mr. Jesse Poindexter
and Mrs. Jimmy Shipps Poindexter.
Mr. Poindexter is survived by three sisters, Mrs. Lee Vanison and Ms
Geraldine Poindexter of Nathalie and Mrs. Carlyle Keller of Cambria
Heights, NY, a brother, Mr. Charles S. Poindexter of Odenton, MD.
A memorial service for Mr. Poindexter will be held Monday, February 18
at 1 p.m. at the chapel of Jeffress Funeral Home and Cremation Service
in Brookneal with the Rev. Robert Tucker officiating. Condolences may
