Nathaniel Thomas (Dick) Powell
Nathaniel Thomas (Dick) Powell, 79, of Amherst, VA, died peacefully
in
his home, Athlone Farm, on Tuesday, February 5, 2008.
Born in Halifax County, VA, he was the son of the late Annie
Lovelace
Powell and John Edward Powell.
He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Alice Howell Powell, and
their
three daughters: Pamela Powell Williamson (husband Jerry) of Boone,
NC,
Rebecca Powell OíConnell (husband Kevin) of Columbia, SC, and Celia
Powell Liebl (husband Rex) of Raleigh, NC. One of Dick's greatest
joys
was his five grandchildren: Shannon O'Connell Van Heest (husband
Kyle)
of Enid, OK, Brent O'Connell, Samuel Liebl, Rebecca O'Connell, and
Joseph Liebl. Surviving him also are his brother, William Morton
Powell (wife Jayne) of Athens, GA, his sister, Sylvia McLaughlin, of
Halifax, VA; along with three sisters-in-law, Betty Howell, Libby
Howell, and Robbie Howell; and two brothers-in-law, Robert Howell,
and
Milton Perry.
Dick was predeceased by his brother, John Edward Powell, Jr., and
two
sisters: Louise DeVito and Virginia Swisher.
Dick proudly served his country as an Army Officer during the Korean
War. He received his B.S. degree at Virginia Polytechnic Institute
and
his M.S. and Ph.D. degrees from N.C. State University. Dr. Powell's
career is reflected by the many honors and awards he received as a
professor of Plant Pathology and Genetics at N.C. State
University. In
addition to eight outstanding teacher awards, he was named "Fellow"
in
his professional society — American Phytopathological Society,
received
a Certificate of Merit for his research, the Distinguished Alumnus
Award from VPI, and a Phillip Morris Distinguished Professorship at
N.C
State University.
Dick was a member of Western Boulevard Presbyterian Church in
Raleigh,
NC, and was faithful in attendance at St. Mark's Episcopal Church in
Clifford, VA, where a memorial service will be conducted at 11:00
a.m.
on Friday, February 8, 2008. His home will be open from 4:00 — 6:00
p.m. on Thursday, February 7 for family and friends to gather. In
lieu
of flowers, memorials may be sent to St. Mark's Episcopal Church
designated "Memorial Garden Fund" to honor Dick's love of nature and
gardening or a charity of your choice.
Dick was a strong, yet kind and gentle man who was loved and
respected
wherever he went. A positive man, unwavering in his faith, who
believed
in the goodness of others, he was devoted to his family and they to
him. He will be much missed in this world but not forgotten; absent
in
body but present in spirit.

Mrs. Nancy Cloutier Collier
Mrs. Nancy Cloutier Collier, 71, of 3061 Volens Road, Nathalie died
Saturday, February 2, 2008 at Halifax Regional Hospital. She was
born
in Louisville, KY on September 29, 1936, a daughter of the late
Francis
Monroe Cloutier and Lillian Cloutier and was married to the late
Richard Reber Collier.
She is survived by one daughter, Joyce C. Frank of Nathalie; one
son,
Kenneth Paul Collier and wife Beth of Nathalie; one sister, Ida C.
Lynch of Louisville, KY; eight grandchildren and four
great-grandchildren.
Memorial services will be held today at 2:00 p.m. at Powell Funeral
Home Chapel with Rev. Vance Midgett officiating.
Mrs. Ruth Guill Heath
Mrs. Ruth Guill Heath, 93, of 6224 Dryburg Road, Scottsburg died
Monday, February 4, 2008 at Halifax Regional Hospital. She was born
in
Halifax County on December 14, 1914, a daughter of the late Charlie
R.
Guill and Mary Will Snead Guill and was married to the late Hinton
James Heath, Sr. She was a member of Fork Baptist Church and was
active with the Senior Baptist Women.
She is survived by three daughters, Ann H. Chaney and husband Ed of
South Boston, Deborah H. Walden of Halifax, Janet H. Blevins and
husband Jay of Scottsburg; three sons, Hinton Heath, Jr. and wife
Betty
of Clover, Aubrey Heath and wife Margie of Scottsburg, Glen Heath
and
wife Linda of Memphis, TN; nine grandchildren, 11
great-grandchildren,
one great-great-grandchild; one sister, Beatrice "Tina" Barker of
Scottsburg. She was preceded in death by one grandson, Curtis
Heath,
one great-grandson, Kevin Hatcher, one son-in-law, David Walden,
four
brothers, Joe, Charlie, John and Guy Guill and one sister, Elizabeth
"Lizzie" Snead.
Funeral services will be held Friday, February 8 at 2:00 p.m. at
Fork
Baptist Church with Rev. Jim Bunce and Rev. Jason Murray
officiating.
Burial will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive
friends tonight from 7:00-8:30 p.m. at Powell Funeral
Home. Memorials
may be directed to Fork Baptist Church Cemetery Fund or the Gideon's
International.
Mrs. Isla Nelson Bagbey
Mrs. Isla Nelson Bagbey, 78, wife of Floyd Allen Bagbey, died
Monday,
February 4, 2008 at Halifax Regional Hospital. A daughter of the
late
John Irby and Berta Lowery Nelson, Isla was born and reared in
Halifax
County. She was a graduate of Oak Hill High School and a member of
the
first graduating class of Halifax-South Boston School of Nursing.
Isla’s nursing career spanned 58 years and during those years, she
was
employed with South Boston Hospital, Halifax Regional Hospital, The
Fuller-Roberts Clinic and Prompt Medical. In addition to nursing,
Isla
loved to farm and be the “neighborhood nurse.” She was a member of
Amis Chapel Baptist Church where she was active in the WMU.
A funeral service was held at 11 AM Wednesday at Amis Chapel Baptist
Church with the Reverends Ron Craddock, Jim McAlister and Gene
Brooks
officiating. In addition to her husband of 59 years, Isla is
survived
by a daughter and son-in-law, Wanda and R. Michael Harris of
Raleigh,
NC; a son and daughter-in-law, Bobby and Sherryl Bagbey of Buffalo
Junction; brothers, Roosevelt Nelson of Nelson, Irby Nelson of South
Hill, J. Robert Nelson of Virgilina; and sisters, Mary N. Weary of
Buffalo Junction, Virgie McCann of Roxboro, NC, Nannie Taylor and
Lucy
Nelson, both of Richmond. Also surviving are grandchildren, Bryan
Harris and his wife, Jessica, and Heather H. Totty and her husband,
Stephen, both of Raleigh, NC, Shannon Bagbey of Clarksville and
Robbie
Bagbey of Roxboro and great grandchildren, Haley Harris, Craig Totty,
and Austin Harris. Isla was preceded in death by her brother, James
D.
