Mr. Earl Brooks Phillips
Mr. Earl Brooks Phillips, 69, of 3015 Virgie Cole Road, South Boston
died Sunday, January 27, 2008 at Brian Center, Fincastle.  He was born
May 29, 1938 in Halifax County, a son of the late Roy Edmund Phillips
and Neville Cole Phillips and was married to Marie Norwood Phillips.
He formerly attended Grace Baptist Church, was a member of the Hyco
Hunting Club and a retired employee of Burlington Industries, Inc.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by one daughter, Lisa Crawford
of South Boston; two sons, Scott Phillips of South Boston and Kevin
Phillips of New Mexico; grandchildren, Casey Crawford, Jayse Phillips
and great-grandchildren, Camden Crawford, Nathan Crawford and friends
Jennifer Reagan, Robin Throckmorton, Christine Rippee, Carolyn Hale.
He was preceded in death by two brothers, Pervis Phillips and Curly
Phillips.
Funeral services will be held today at 2:00 p.m. at Brooks Funeral Home
Chapel with Rev. Dave Cline officiating.  Burial will follow in Grace
Baptist Church Cemetery.

 

 Mr. Drewey "Poochie" Elam Greene
Mr. Drewey "Poochie" Elam Greene, 72, of 7199 Hunting Creek Road,
Clover died Monday, January 28, 2008 at his home.  He was born in
Halifax County on February 15, 1935, a son of the late Mr. Alfred
Greene and Mrs. Bettie Cousins Greene.  He was married to Mrs. Dorothy
G. Greene, was a member of Bethel Grove Baptist Church and was a former
employee of Halifax County Public Schools.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by one daughter, Ms. Darlene
Downey of Danville; three sons, Mr. David Greene of Roxboro, NC, Mr.
Danny Greene and Mr. Derrick Greene, both of Clover; one sister, Mrs.
Nancy Ashton of Ft. Washington, MD; two brothers, Mr. Alfred Greene of
Maryland and Mr. George Greene of Clinton, MD; 11 grandchildren, five
great-grandchildren; one aunt, Mrs. Judy Hendricks of Nathalie, other
relatives and friends.
Funeral services will be held today at 1:00 p.m. at Bethel Grove
Baptist Church with Rev. William Hicks officiating.  Burial will follow
in the church cemetery.
 
 

Mr. Robert Lynn "Dusty" Carey, II

Mr. Robert Lynn "Dusty" Carey, II, 19, of 6091 James D. Hagood Highway,

Scottsburg died Sunday, January 27, 2008 in Halifax County.  He was
born in Halifax County on November 26, 1988 and was the son of Robert
Lynn "Smokey" Carey and Penny Hall Carey.  He was a member of South
Boston Church of God, a student at DCC, loved to skateboard, was a
former member of Halifax County High School Marching Band and worked at
Tractor Supply Company.
In addition to his parents, he is survived by one brother, Dakota Carey
of Scottsburg; maternal grandparents, Louis and Betty Jean Brewer of
Scottsburg, Robert Joe Hall and wife Maggie of Ewing; paternal
grandmother, Mary Todaro of Smithfield, NC; three aunts, Celeste and
George Owens, Annette and Howard Frazier, Alma and Candido Fernandez;
and a number of cousins and friends.  He was preceded in death by two
grandfathers, Leo Todaro and Robert "Baldy" Carey and two
great-grandmothers, Georgia High and Ophie Hall.
Funeral services will be held today at 2:00 p.m. at South Boston Church
of God with Rev. Bruce Hagy and Rev. D.G. Fox officiating.  Burial will
follow in the Carey Family Cemetery, Scottsburg.

 

Jewel Cox Martin
Jewel Cox Martin, 91, of 103 Rosehill Drive, South Boston died
Wednesday, January 30, 2008 at The Woodview.  She was born in Carroll
County on September 23, 1916, daughter of the late Emmitt "E.B." and
Maude Blevins Cox and was married to the late Lucas "Dutch" Martin.
She was a member of Kingdom Hall of Jehovah's Witnesses and was a
homemaker.
She is survived by one daughter, Geraldine M. Conner of South Boston;
one granddaughter, Kelly C. Clayton and one grandson, Miles Conner;
four great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.  She was
preceded in death by a daughter, Janice Martin Whitt, grandson Kevin
Gaylord Parton and a number of brothers and sisters.
Funeral services will be held Friday, February 1 at 2:00 p.m. at Brooks
Funeral Home with Doug Stacy officiating.  Burial will follow in
Halifax Memorial Gardens.  The family will receive friends tonight from
7:00-8:30 p.m. at Brooks Funeral Home.
