Obituaries Mr. Leslie Bernard "L.B." Shields
Mr. Leslie Bernard "L.B." Shields of 326 Berry Hill Road, South
Boston
died Saturday, January 26, 2008 at his home. Born in Halifax County
on
March 10, 1925, he was 82 at the time of his death. He was the son
of
the late Luther Shields and Nanny Sue Shields and was married to
Doris
Royal Shields.
Mr. Shields is survived by his wife of the home, a son, Kenneth D.
Shields of South Boston, two daughters, Carol S. Robertson of
Asheville, NC and Cathy S. Simpson of South Boston, two
grandchildren,
Rhonda Rbginnis of Asheville and Jason Simpson of South Boston and
one
great grandchild, Andrew McCraw of Asheville, NC.
A graveside service for Mr. Shields will be conducted on Tuesday,
January 29 at 11 a.m. at Oak Ridge cemetery with the Rev. Don Bryant
officiating. The family will be at the home, 226 Berry Hill Road,
South
Boston.
Mrs. Janie Kate Barker Kaywood
Mrs. Janie Kate Barker Kaywood of South Boston died Friday, January
25,
2008 at her home. Born in Rogersville, Tennessee on February 5,
1920,
she was 87 at the time of her death. She was the daughter of the
late
Eddie Barker and May Brooks Barker and was married to the late Henry
E.
Kaywood. She was of the Baptist faith.
Mrs. Kaywood is survived by three sons, Kenny Barker and wife Norma
of
Ashland, Elbert Junior Kaywood and wife, Lucy and Danny Lee Kaywood
and
wife, Glennis, all of South Boston and a daughter Janie Louise Smith
and husband Robert L. Smith of South Boston, sixteen grandchildren
and
eleven great grandchildren.
A funeral service for Mrs. Kaywood will be held on Monday, January
28
at 11 a.m. at Powell Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. William
Coghill
officiating. Burial will follow in Oak Ridge cemetery.
Mabel Stevens Bowen
Mabel Stevens Bowen, 85, of 3148 Rip Rap Road, Virgilina died
Wednesday, January 23, 2008 at Halifax Regional Hospital. She was
born
in Halifax County on April 18, 1922, a daughter of the late Claude
L.
Stevens and Nadie Huffman Stevens. She was married to the late
James
Aubrey Bowen, was a homemaker and a member of Union Christian
Church.
She is survived by five sons, Claude D. Farmer and wife Yvonne of
Ringgold, Robert E. Farmer and wife Lorine of South Boston, Donald
Wayne Bowen and wife Paulette of Virgilina, Beverly A. Bowen and
wife
Jan of Buffalo Junction, Larry D. Bowen and wife Robin of
Clarksville;
devoted nephew, Woodroe Stevens and wife Frances of Danville; 14
grandchildren, 23 great-grandchildren, three
great-great-grandchildren,
nieces and nephews, other relatives and friends. She was preceded
in
death by two granddaughters, Veronica Bowen Miller and Tina Marie
Wray
and a great-grandson, Brian Robert Farmer.
Funeral services were held Saturday, January 26 at Union Christian
Church with Rev. Jimmy Pulliam officiating. Burial followed in
North
Fork Baptist Church Cemetery. Memorials may be directed to a
charity
of your choice.
Mrs. Mary Coleman Brown
Mrs. Mary Coleman Brown, 81, of 1020 Gatha's Trail, Halifax died
Tuesday, January 22, 2008 at Halifax Regional Hospital. She was
born
in Halifax County on August 8, 1926, a daughter of the late Mr. John
Thomas Coleman and Mrs. Sarah Jane Lacks Coleman. She was married
to
the late Mr. Qually Stewart Brown and was a member of Ellis Creek
Baptist Church.
She is survived by one daughter, Mrs. Sarah Judkins of Halifax; one
brother, Mr. Paul Coleman of Vernon Hill; six sisters, Ms. Katherine
Coleman of Vernon Hill, Mrs. Pauline Cousins of Teaneck, NJ, Mrs.
Lenora Bowman of Manhattan, NY, Ms. Pearl Coleman of New York, Ms.
Estelle Coleman and Mrs. Eva Bates, both of South Boston; two
grandchildren, one great-grandson; two sisters-in-law, Mrs. Sandra
Coleman and Mrs. Ernestine Coleman; one son-in-law, Mr. Leigh R.
Judkins; other relatives and friends.
Funeral services will be held today at 1:00 p.m. at Ellis Creek
Baptist
Church with Rev. Bruce Featherston officiating. Burial will follow
in
the church cemetery.
Billy Joe Oakley
FRANKLIN - Billy Joe Oakley, 46, died January 23, 2008. Born and
raised in Greensboro, NC, he was an employee of ATC Panels, Franklin
and attended Black Creek Baptist Church.
He is survived by his son, Clay Oakley of Sedley; his mother, Annie
Stewart Daniel of South Boston; three sisters, Pam Durham of
Danville,
Penny Oakley and Melanie Ruholl, both of Monroe, NC; and four
brothers,
Andy Oakley of Greensboro, NC, Todd Oakley of New Jersey, Lee Oakley
of
Monroe, NC and Chris Baucom of Lawndale, NC.
Funeral services will be held today at Black Creek Baptist Church
with
Rev. Greg Kitts and Rev. Jack Stewart officiating. Burial will
follow
in the church cemetery.
Mrs. Sally Stevens Smith
Mrs. Sally Stevens Smith, 89, of 103 Rosehill Drive, South Boston
died
Thursday, January 24, 2008 at Halifax Regional Hospital. She was
born
July 29, 1918, a daughter of the late Mamie D. Owen Stevens and
Daniel
Jacob Stevens and was married to the late Manuel Cooper Smith. She
was
a member of Bethel Baptist Church and was a retired employee of
Craddock & Terry.
She is survived by granddaughters, Debbie Woltz and husband Stephen
of
Virgilina, Danette Mitchell and husband Cabell of Danville; one
grandson, Donald Clyde Burton and wife Sherry of Bremerton, WA; one
sister, Elizabeth S. Bane of Madison Heights; one brother, Frank
Stevens of South Boston; great-granddaughters, Jamie Burton, Dana
Mitchell, Stormi Woltz and great-grandsons, Sean Burton, Stevie
Woltz.
She was preceded in death by daughters Helen Smith King and Betty
Jean
Smith, sister Nellie Glass and brothers Daniel Jacob "Jr." Stevens,
John Stevens, Walter Stevens, James Hagood "Doc" Stevens, Charlie
Stevens, Millard Stevens.
Graveside services were held Sunday, January 27 at Bethel Baptist
Church Cemetery with Rev. Bill McEntire officiating.
Helena Anne Motley Cox
Helena Anne Motley Cox, 89, of Halifax died January 24, 2008. She
was
born January 4, 1919 in Chatham, a daughter of the late Lee Ackle
Motley and Minnie Anne Shelton Motley and was married to Samuel
"Sam"
P. Cox. She was a member of Fairview United Methodist Church,
Danville, was an associate member of Halifax United Methodist Church
and retired from Coates Elementary School, Danville.
She is survived by one daughter, Doris Anne C. "D.A." Powell and
husband Douglas of Halifax; three grandchildren, Daniel W. Powell
and
wife Katina of Powhatan, Donald W. Powell and wife Karen of Roanoke,
Deanne Helenea P. Shaw and husband Kelly of Halifax; five
great-grandchildren, Caleb Shaw, Nathan Powell, Hannah Anne Shaw,
Rebecca Shaw and Alexander Powell; nieces, nephews, other relatives
and
friends. She was preceded in death by one son, Samuel R. Cox and
two
sisters and four brothers.
Graveside services were held Sunday at Danville Memorial Gardens
with
Rev. Randall Williams, Linwood Daniel and Rev. Bob Gochenour
officiating. Memorial services will be held today at 2:00 p.m. at
Halifax United Methodist Church. Memorials may be directed to the
Halifax United Methodist Church Memorial Fund or a charity of your
choice.
Deacon Naman Bradley
Deacon Naman Bradley, 70, of Nathalie died January 23, 2008 in South
Boston. He was the son of the late Mr. Charlie Bradley and Mrs.
Priscilla Black Bradley. He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Elnora
Bradley of the home, four sons, Alan (Polly) of Clinton, Maryland,
Walter (Peggy) of Naruna, Naman Fitzgerald (Denise) of Rustburg,
Vincent (Shela) of Goldsboro, NC, two daughters, Deborah Miller
(Gideon) of Java, and Agnes Wright (Edmond) of Temple Hills,
Maryland,
twelve grandchildren, two great grandchildren, three sisters, Alice
Robertson (Jessie) of Landover, Maryland, Minnie Hamlett (Jessie) of
Brookneal, Dorothy Boyd of Wilmington, Delaware, one uncle, Ocie
Black
(Sarah) of Baltimore, Maryland, one aunt, Mrs. Mary Black of
Nathalie,
his mother-in-law, Evangelist Ada Tucker. sisters-in-law and
brothers-in-law, Hallie Bradley of Nathalie, Mary Lena Fields
(Bishop
Allen), Jeanette Saunders, Diane Tucker, Gracie Scales, Evangelist
Alice Fields (Earl), Joyce Snow (Robert), Virginia May (Jeff), John
Tucker, Walter Tucker, and Ronald Earl, all of Wilmington, Delaware
and
a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
A funeral service for Deacon Bradley was held Sunday, January 27 at
2
p.m. at the Second Buffalo Baptist Church in Nathalie with Rev.
Sandy
Palmer officiating with burial following in the church cemetery.
