Obituaries

Mr. John Stevenson Hopkins

Mr. John Stevenson Hopkins, 82, of 2041 Philpott Road, South Boston
died Sunday, January 20, 2007 at Halifax Regional Hospital.  He was
born in Amelia County on August 4, 1925, a son of the late Walter J.
Hopkins and Jerry Hudson Hopkins, was married to the late Ruby Alley
Hopkins and an Army World War II veteran.
He is survived by two sisters, Nancy H. Beverly and Eunice H. Clark,
both of South Boston; and several nieces and nephews.  He was preceded
in death by sisters Estelle Beverly, Fannie Childress, Mary Hamilton,
Patricia Hopkins and brothers Lewis Hopkins, Albert Hopkins, Junior
Hopkins and Emmitt Hopkins.
Funeral services were held Wednesday, January 23 at Brooks Funeral Home
Chapel with Rev. Norman Talley officiating.  Burial followed in
Highland Burial Park, Danville.  Memorials may be directed to the
Halifax County Humane Society, P.O. Box 969, South Boston, VA 24592.

 

Mr. Clarence William Guthrie
Mr. Clarence William Guthrie, 83, of 2034 Pierces Trail, Nathalie died
Sunday, January 20, 2008 at The Woodview.  He was born in Halifax
County on February 4, 1924, a son of the late Lee Thomas Guthrie and
Daisy Cothran Guthrie and was an Army veteran of World War II.
He is survived by two brothers, Stuart Wilson Guthrie of Nathalie and
Charlie Thomas Guthrie and wife Jean of South Boston; one
sister-in-law, Mary Harris Guthrie of Nathalie.  He was preceded in
death by one sister, Beatrice G. Davis.
Graveside services were held Wednesday, January 23 at Liberty Christian
Church Cemetery with Rev. Dwight Moore officiating.  Memorials may be
directed to the Liberty Christian Church Cemetery Fund.

 

Mr. Gary Thomas Ligon,
Mr. Gary Thomas Ligon, 35, of 1425 Moore Street, South Boston died
January 13, 2008 at Halifax Regional Hospital.  He was born in South
Boston on March 13, 1972, a son of  Frances Heath Ligon and Aubrey G.
Ligon.
He is survived by his father, Aubrey G. Ligon of Scottsburg and at the
time of his death, he was also survived by his mother, Frances Heath
Ligon who died on January 16, 2008.
Memorial services will be held Friday, January 25 at 12:00 noon at
Powell Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Randall Williams officiating.

Ms. Frances Heath Ligon
Ms. Frances Heath Ligon, 70, of 1425 Moore Street, South Boston died
January 16, 2008 at Halifax Regional Hospital.  She was born in Halifax
County on August 28, 1937, a daughter of the late Horace Hofer Heath
and Winifred Lester Heath Crabtree and was a member of Halifax United
Methodist Church.
She is survived by one brother, Horace Lester Heath and wife Donna of
Wilmington, NC.  She was preceded in death by her son, Gary Thomas
Ligon.
Memorial services will be held Friday, January 25 at 12:00 noon at
Powell Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Randall Williams officiating.

Mary Bass Eubank
Mary Bass Eubank, 90, of 1035 Virginia Avenue, Clarksville died Monday,
January 21, 2008 at Halifax Regional Hospital.  She was born in
Mecklenburg County on April 9, 1917, a daughter of the late Samuel
Alfred Bass and Minnie Bet Woltz Bass and was married to the late
William Robert Eubank. She was the oldest member attending Gravel Hill
Baptist Church, was a charter member and past president of the Women's
Missionary Union and a member of the Grand Oldies Club and retired
employee of Lake Sleepwear.
She is survived by one son, Samuel Herbert Eubank and wife Susie J. of
Clarksville; one daughter, Mary Scott Booth and husband Douglas M. of
Clarksville; eight grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren, five
nieces and two nephews.  She was preceded in death by one son, William
Aubrey Eubank.
Funeral services were held Wednesday, January 23 at Gravel Hill Baptist
Church with Rev. Scott Day officiating.  Burial followed in the church
cemetery.  Memorials may be directed to the Mecklenburg County Rescue
Squad, P.O. Box 1539, Clarksville, VA 23927.
 
Mr. Stanley Alonzo Strange
Mr. Stanley Alonzo Strange, 48, of Roxboro, NC, formerly of Halifax
County, died Saturday, January 19, 2008 at his home.  He was born in
Halifax County on December 3, 1959, a son of the late Mr. Douglas
Strange and Mrs. Mary Watkins Strange and was married to Mrs. Toni
Bowman Strange.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by one daughter, Mrs. Marlena
Pheney of Washington, DC; two sons, Mr. Demaine Broodie and Mr. Quintin
Strange, both of Washington, DC; one step-daughter, Mrs. Trina Torian
of Roxboro, NC; three brothers, Mr. Brian Strange, Mr. Moses Miller,
Jr. and Mr. Lamont Miller, all of South Boston; six grandchildren; his
grandmother, Mrs. Elsie Strange of South Boston; one daughter-in-law,
Mrs. Tiffany Broodie; two sons-in-law, Mr. Carlton Pheney and Mr.
Robert Torian; five sisters-in-law, three brothers-in-law, three
uncles, seven nieces, other relatives and friends.
Funeral services will be held Saturday, January 26 at 2:00 p.m. at
Greater Mayfield Apostolic Church with Elder Bernard Wilkerson
officiating.  Burial will follow in Oak Ridge Cemetery.  The family
will receive friends at 1126 Sinai Road, South Boston.
 
Mr. Willie Anthony Crews
Mr. Willie Anthony Crews, 53, of 1211 Blue Rock Trail, Vernon Hill died
Monday, January 21, 2008 at Halifax Regional Hospital.  He was born in
Halifax County on March 6, 1954, a son of Mrs. Marie Glass Crews and
the late Mr. Willie Eddie Crews.  He was married to Mrs. Carolyn
Edmunds Crews and was a member of New Zion Baptist Church.
In addition to his wife and mother, he is survived by three daughters,
Ms. Jessica Crews of Atlanta, GA, Ms. Tandra Crews and Ms. Jobina
Crews, both of Vernon Hill; five sisters, Mrs. Karen Brown of Garner,
NC, Mrs. Venessa Powell and Mrs. Janice Powell, both of Nathalie, Ms.
Thelma Crews and Mrs. Yevette Bethel, both of South Boston; three
brothers, Mr. Clarence Crews of Hartford, CT, Mr. Keith Crews of
Scottsburg and Mr. James Crews of South Boston; two grandchildren,
Ge'Quan Crews and Jahshii Kerr; three brothers-in-law, three
sisters-in-law, devoted friends Mr. Roberts Perkins, Mr. Tracey Powell
and Mr. Bernard Barksdale, other relatives and friends.
Funeral services will be held Friday, January 25 at 1:00 p.m. at New
Zion Baptist Church with Rev. Willie N. Yancey officiating.  Burial
will follow in the church cemetery.  The family will receive friends at
1211 Blue Rock Trail, Vernon Hill.
