Obituaries

Mr. Robert "Buster" William Stevens

Mr. Robert "Buster" William Stevens, 96, of 1176 Hyco Road, South
Boston died Wednesday, January 16, 2008 at Berry Hill Nursing Home.  He
was born in Halifax County on October 20, 1911, a son of the late
Thomas Ellis Stevens and Nora Price Stevens and was married to the late
Norma E. Wilson Stevens.  He was a member of First Baptist Church,
South Boston, an Army veteran having served in World War II and was
retired from Spencer Lumber Company.
He is survived by two sisters, Mary S. Barnes and Gladys D. Dodson,
both of Halifax; one brother, Archer T. Stevens of Moore, SC; six
nieces, Mary B. Magnotto, Monica D. Conner, Becky S. Pugh, Carolyn S.
Snyder, Nancy S. Dement, Patricia S. Petras; one nephew, Thomas E.
Stevens, and a number of great-nieces and nephews.  He was preceded in
death by two sisters, Hilda S. Power and Reba Jeanett Stevens and two
brothers, John B. Stevens and Charles Melvin Stevens.
Graveside services were held Saturday, January 19 at Halifax Memorial
Gardens with Rev. David Slabach officiating.

 

Mrs. Lillian Ferguson Terry
Mrs. Lillian Ferguson Terry, 78, of 2000 College Street, South Boston
died Wednesday, January 16, 2008 at her home.  She was born in Halifax
County on January 19, 1929, a daughter of the late Mr. Lloyd Ferguson
and Mrs. Peachie Geneva Williams Bailey.  She was married to the late
Mr. George Douglas Terry and was a member of Mt. Olive Baptist Church.
She is survived by one daughter, Mrs. Geneva Tucker of Vernon Hill; one
son, Mr. Bobby Ferguson of Raleigh, NC; 11 grandchildren, 16
great-grandchildren; one son-in-law, Mr. Theodore Tucker of Vernon
Hill; one daughter-in-law, Mrs. Valerie Ferguson of Raleigh, NC, other
relatives and friends.
Funeral services were held Sunday, January 20 at Crawford House Chapel,
Halifax, with Rev. Evon Bush officiating.  Burial followed in Mt.
Pleasant C.M.E. Church Cemetery.

 

 

 

Mr. Thomas Willard "Rex" Layne

GREENSBORO, NC - Mr. Thomas Willard "Rex" Layne, 75, of 5407 Forest
Oaks Drive died Thursday, January 17, 2008 at Beacon Place in
Greensboro.  He was born in Red House, Campbell County on September 8,
1932, a son of the late Thomas Richard and Ella White Layne.  He was a
Mason, a veteran of the US Navy, was employed by Western Electric and
later Lucent Technologies.
He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Beulah W. "BeBe" Layne of Danville; a
brother, Mr. Leonard Layne of Lynchburg; sister, Mrs. Elizabeth Layne
Wright of Vernon Hill; other relatives and friends.  He was preceded in
death by brothers Charlie Layne, Raleigh Layne, Acie Layne and sister,
Mrs. Frances Brightwell Matthews.
A service of remembrance was held Sunday at Boone-Reynolds Funeral Home
Chapel in Eden. Interment will be held at a later date. Memorials may
be directed to Beacon Place at Hospice of Greensboro, 2502 Summit
Avenue, Greensboro, NC 27405.
