Obituaries

Mrs. Ada Linwood Strickland Guthrie

Mrs. Ada Linwood Strickland Guthrie, age 91, of Alchie Lane, Nathalie
died Saturday, January 12, 2008 at St. Mary's Hospital in Richmond.
A funeral service for Mrs. Guthrie will be conducted on Wednesday,
January 16 at 2 p.m. at the First Baptist Church of Millstone. The
family requests that memorial contributions may be made to the Liberty
Volunteer Fire Department of the First Baptist Church of Millstone.
Visitation will be held at Powell Funeral Home on Tuesday evening from
7 until 8:30 p.m.

 

 Mr. John Knight "Jack" Poole
Mr. John Knight "Jack" Poole, Sr., 83, of 13301 Virgilina Road, died
Saturday, January 12, 2008 at his home. Born in Halifax County, Mr.
Poole was the son of the late James Link and Mary Holt Poole. He
retired from Burlington Industries and attended High View Baptist
Church. He served in the US Navy during WWII and was a lifetime member
of the VFW. He was also an avid hunter and fisherman.
Mr. Poole is survived by his wife, Lucy Stigall Poole, two sons, Jimmy
Earl Poole and wife, Eady of Rocky Mount, John K. Poole, Jr. ad wife,
Lynn of Hillsborough, a daughter, Sandi Hughes and husband Donnie of
Halifax, a sister, Joyce Davis of Greensboro, four grandchildren, Jay
Poole and wife, Hania, Heath Crews, Seth Poole and Leslie Hughes. He
was preceded in death by his brother, Barton Poole and his sister,
Gladys Madden.
A funeral service will be held Monday at 2 p.m. at High View Baptist
Church with Pastor Tommy Faust officiating. Burial will follow in the
church cemetery.

 

 Mr. Oliver Oscar Clark
Mr. Oliver Oscar Clark of Clover (the Mt. Laurel community) died
Thursday, January 10 in Westbury, NY at the age of 87. Born in Halifax
County on July 9, 1920, he was the son of the late Mr. Oliver Clark and
Mrs. Mary Ellen Clark. He was married to the late Mrs. Catherine Brown
Clark and was a member of Bethel Grove Baptist Church. Mr.. Clark was a
World War II Army veteran and was employed by Universal Carting Company
in new York for over forty years.
Mr. Clark is survived by two daughters, Mrs.. Gail Lawrence of
Westbury, NY and Mrs. Elsie Brown of the Bronx, NY, five sisters, Ms.
Louise Clark of Baltimore, MD, Ms. Ruth Clark of Hollis, NY, Mrs.
Loretta Garrett of South Boston, Mrs. Dorothy McDaniel of St. Albans,
NY and Mrs. Patty Brown of Clover, a brother, Mr. Disney Clark of
Clover, five grandchildren, a son-in-law, Mr. James Lawrence, four
sisters-in-law, Mrs. Edna Clark, Mrs. Mamie Clark, Mrs. Josephine
Wilborne and Mrs. Eva Hendricks, two brothers-in-law, Mr. Louis
McDaniel and Mr. Lilton Garrett, a devoted friend, Mrs. Minnie Stewart
and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. In addition
to his parents and wife, Mr. Clark was preceded in death by his son,
Alan, a sister Elizabeth and two brothers, Otis and Davis.
A funeral service for Mr. Clark will be held Tuesday, January 15 at  1
p.m. at Bethel Grove Baptist Church with the Rev. William Hicks
officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery with military
honors by American Legion Post 99. The family will receive friends at
the Crawford House Chapel in Halifax on Monday evening from 7 until 8
p.m.
 Mrs. Mary Williams Mills
Mrs. Mary Williams Mills of 1064 Sinai Road, South Boston died
Thursday, January 10, 2008 at Halifax Regional Hospital at the age of
91. Born in Halifax County on September 8, 1916, she was the daughter
of the late Mr. Pleasant Williams and Mrs. Rosa Owens Williams. She was
married to the late Mr. Ernest Jake Mills, Sr. and was a member of the
Union grove CME Church.
Mrs. Mills is survived by four daughters, Mrs. Betsy M. Edmunds, Mrs.
Mary Dixon, Mrs. Rebecca Ballou and Rev. Shirley Woody, all of South
Boston, two sons, Mr. Ernest Mills, Jr. of South Boston and Mr. Willie
Howard Mills of Halifax, two sisters, Mrs. Annie C. Davis of Halifax
and Mrs. Rosa Lee Muse of Bronx, NY, 18 grandchildren, 26 great
grandchildren and one great great granddaughter, two sons-in-law, Mr.
Wayne Dixon and Mr. Calvin T. Woody, Jr. a daughter-in-law, Mrs.
Dorothy Mills and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and
friends. She was preceded in death by a daughter, Ms. Adell Mills and a
son, Mr. James Mills, three sisters and four brothers.
A funeral service for Mrs.  Mills will be conducted on Monday, January
14 at 2 p.m. at the Union Grove CME Church with the Rev. Larry Brown
officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. The family is
receiving friends at the home, 1064 Sinai Road, South Boston.

 

 Mrs. JoAnn Baker Gupton
Mrs. JoAnn Baker Gupton, 55, wife of Frank A. Gupton, died January 11,
2008 at her home. A daughter of the late Ollie Mae Baker, JoAnn was a
homemaker.
In addition to her husband, Mrs. Gupton is survived by a daughter,
Tammie Wiliams and her husband Rusty of Wilton, NC, a brother, Ricky
Brantley of Roxboro, NC and grandchildren, Janey and Wesley Williams.
A memorial service for Mrs. Gupton will be held at 11 a. m. Monday,
January 14 in the chapel of Watkins Cooper Lyon Funeral Home with the
Rev. Bill McEntire officiating. Online condolences may be expressed to

 Mrs. Christine Bertha Womack Olds
Mrs. Christine Bertha Womack Olds, 85, of 1017 Joe Jackson Trail,
Halifax died January 9, 2008 at Berry Hill Nursing Home.  She was born
in Halifax County on March 6, 1922, a daughter of the late Mr. Irvin
Womack and Mrs. Nannie Sue Tucker.  She was married to the late Mr.
Garland Edward Olds and was a member of New Zion Baptist Church.
She is survived by one daughter, Mrs. Sue Traynham of Halifax; 16
grandchildren, 31 great-grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren; two
daughters-in-law, Mrs. Cheryl Olds and Mrs. Bertha Olds; other
relatives and friends.  She was preceded in death by one daughter, Mrs.
Ruby Jenifer and four sons, Mr. Samuel Olds, Mr. Preston Olds, Mr.
Donnie Olds and Mr. James Olds.
Funeral services will be held today at 1:00 p.m. at New Zion Baptist
Church with Rev. Willie N. Yancey officiating.  Burial will follow in
the church cemetery.

 

 Mrs. Sandra "Sandy" Wade Crews
Mrs. Sandra "Sandy" Wade Crews, 48, of 3102 Green Valley Road, Clover
died January 11, 2008 at Duke University Medical Center.  She was born
in Halifax County on January 25, 1959, a daughter of Willie Lee Wade
and Bernice Newcomb Wade and was married to Cecil Bruce "Bubba" Crews.
She was of the Methodist faith.
In addition to her husband and parents, she is survived by one brother,
Willie Lee "Billy" Wade, Jr. of Clover; a niece and nephew, Jordan Wade
and Jarrett Wade.
Funeral services were held Sunday, January 13 at Powell Funeral Home
with Rev. Bonnie Pizzeck officiating.  Burial followed in Clover
Cemetery.  Memorials may be directed to the Halifax County Humane
Society, P.O. Box 969, South Boston, VA 24592.
