Obituaries
Haley Ann Duckett, 26 days old, died Saturday, December 29, 2007 at
Duke University Medical Center. She was born December 3, 2007 in South
Boston, a daughter of Kandance Irby of Alton and Michael Duckett of
South Boston.
She is survived by her maternal grandfather, Walter Irby of Alton, her
maternal grandmother, Patricia Irby of Alton, her paternal grandmother,
Debbie Duckett of South Boston; an uncle, Walter "Buddy" Irby, Jr. of
Alton; great-grandmothers, Brenda Rowland of Philadelphia, PA, Ruth
Irby of Roxboro, NC and Mary Ann Duckett of Hendersonville, NC.
Graveside services will be held today at 2:00 p.m. at Harmony United
Methodist Church Cemetery with Rev. John Eure officiating.
Mrs. Vernelle Davis Johns
Mrs. Vernelle Davis Johns, 57, of 1187 Owens Mill Road, Nathalie died
December 31, 2007 at Halifax Regional Hospital. She was born in
Pittsylvania County on April 15, 1948, a daughter of Madeline Waller
Clay and the late Swanson Roland Clay, Sr. She was married to the late
Payton L. Johns and was a member of Buffalo Baptist Church.
In addition to her mother, she is survived by one daughter, Betty
Katherine Worley of Nathalie; two brothers, Herbert Clay of Mt. Airy
and Swanson R. Clay, Jr. of Roxboro, NC; one sister, Margie Seamster of
Gretna; two adopted daughters, Sherry Tuck of Virgilina and Melinda
Terry of Nathalie and three grandchildren. She was preceded in death
by one son, Charles E. Davis, Jr.
Graveside services will be held today at 4:00 p.m. at Mulberry Baptist
Church with Rev. Alfred Rimmer officiating. Memorials may be directed
to the American Diabetes Association, 530 Main Street, Suite 200,
Richmond, VA 23219.
Mr. Jerry Wayne Rice
Mr. Jerry Wayne Rice, 38, of 1091 Cluster Springs Road, South Boston
died Monday, December 31, 2007 at Winchester Medical Center. He was
born in Halifax County on August 16, 1969, a son of Linda H. Rice and
Earl F. Rice of South Boston. He was a Navy veteran and kitchen
manager and chef at Brookside Family Restaurant.
In addition to his parents, he is survived by his longtime girlfriend
Susan Axell of Luray; two sisters, Tina R. Smith and husband Jamie of
Virgilina, Shelly Rice of Danville; nephew, J.D. Smith, other relatives
and friends.
Graveside services will be held Friday, January 4 at 2:00 p.m. at
Halifax Memorial Gardens with Larry Rice officiating. The family will
receive friends tonight from 7:00-8:30 p.m. at Brooks Funeral Home.
