Obituaries

Mr. Edward "Ned" Parker Snead

Mr. Edward "Ned" Parker Snead, 83, of South Boston died Saturday, April
21, 2007 at Halifax Regional Hospital. He was born in Halifax County
on October 13, 1923, a son of the late Harry Snead and Virginia Bomar
Snead and was married to the late Sally Coleman Snead. He was a World
War II Army veteran, a Mason and retired from the Virginia ABC Board.
He is survived by one daughter, Sarah Snead of Crimora; two
grandchildren, Nathaniel "Nat" Snead and Becca Snead; one
daughter-in-law, Brenda Snead; one brother, Harry Snead of Buffalo
Junction; three sisters, Mary Ann Reeves of South Hill, Bobbie
Sheffield of Red Oak and Nancy Brady of Finchley. He was preceded in
death by one son, Pat Snead and two sisters, Dorothy Holt and Jean
Thompson.
Graveside services were held April 25 at Grace Episcopal Church
Cemetery with Rev. Dr. Michael Parnell conducting the service.
 
 
 Mrs. Essie Pearl Priddy Layton,
Mrs. Essie Pearl Priddy Layton, 90, of 1077 Lennig Road, Nathalie died
Monday, April 23, 2007 at The Woodview. She was born in Rockingham
County, NC on September 29, 1016, a daughter of the late Alonzon
Richard Priddy and Phoebe Elizabeth Branson Priddy and was married to
the late Shubal Arthur Layton. She was of the Methodist faith and
attended Rehoboth Methodist Church.
She is survived by one daughter, Doris Layton Jackson of Nathalie; five
grandchildren, Darryll Layton, Jennifer Jackson, Christy Lloyd, Thomas
Jackson, Jason Jackson and seven great-grandchildren.
Memorial services will be held Saturday, April 28 at 11:00 a.m. at
Powell Funeral Home Chapel.

 

 Mrs. Vanie Daniel Williams
Mrs. Vanie Daniel Williams, 83, widow of Richard Elliott Williams, died
Monday, April 23, 2007 in South Boston. The daughter of Alfred and
Matilda Daniel, she was employed with Burlington Industries for 26
years, retiring in 1989. She also worked part time with the Patchwork
House.
She is survived by daughters, Linda W. Shotwell of Rockhill, SC and
Dolores Kennedy of South Hill, and a son, Richard Eugene Williams of
South Boston; brothers, Robert Daniel of Spartenburg, SC, George Daniel
of Virgilina, and Jeff Daniel of Richmond; three grandchildren and
three great grandchildren.
Funeral services were held Wednesday at Buffalo Baptist Tabernacle with
Dr. David Pruett officiating. Interment followed in Oakhurst Cemetery.

 

 Mr. Berman Lee Woodson
Mr. Berman Lee Woodson, 85, of 1913 Crawley Avenue, South Boston died
Friday, April 20, 2007 at Halifax Regional Hospital. He was born in
Halifax County on October 26, 1921, a son of the late Rev. John Woodson
and Mrs. Mary Coleman Woodson and was married to Mrs. Loyola F.
Woodson. He was a member of Mt. Olive Baptist Church and was a
longtime employee of Boston Lumber Company.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by one daughter, Mrs. Mary E.
McWilliams of Mitchellville, MD; one son, Mr. Berman L. Woodson, Jr. of
Silver Spring, MD; one sister, Ms. Hattie B. Woodson of Washington, DC;
one son-in-law, Mr. David A. McWilliams, Sr.; one daughter-in-law, Mrs.
Annie Mae Woodson; four grandchildren and other relatives and friends.
Funeral services will be held today at 11:00 a.m. at St. Paschal
Catholic Church with Father Steve Antes officiating. Burial will
follow in Oak Ridge Cemetery.

 

 Mr. Elijah Cheek
Mr. Elijah Cheek, 83, of 3169 Bold Springs Road, South Boston died
April 21, 2007 at his home. He was born in Halifax County on November
10, 1923, a son of the late Mr. Roy Cheek and Mrs. Elizabeth Jordan
Cheek and was married to the late Mrs. Rose Scott Cheek. He was a
member of Dan River View Missionary Baptist Church and was a World War
II Navy veteran.
He is survived by two daughters, Mrs. Evelyn C. Luna and Mrs. Gwendolen
C. Hedgepeth, both of Richmond; three sons, Mr. Elijah Ladaniel Cheek
of Pikesville, MD, Mr. Ernest Wayne Cheek, Sr. of South Boston and the
Honorable Mr. David Eugene Cheek of Richmond; three sisters, Mrs. Alma
C. Powell of Martinsville, Mrs. Edna Duncan of Passaic, NJ and Mrs.
Elsie Harrison of High Point, NC; three brothers, Mr. Calvin Cheek, Mr.
Jasper Cheek and Mr. Charles Cheek, all of South Boston; 15
grandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren; one son-in-law, Mr. Kelly
Hedgepeth; one sister-in-law, other relatives and friends. He was
preceded in death by one daughter, Mrs. Veronica C. Oliver and one
brother, Mr. Marshall Cheek.
Funeral services will be held today at 2:00 p.m. at Dan River Bethel
Baptist Church with Rev. B.B. Blackwell officiating. Burial will
follow in the church cemetery.
 
 Charlotte Lee (Tee) Hodges Stillman
Charlotte Lee (Tee) Hodges Stillman, 87, of Sutherlin, wife of the late
John Hammond Stillman, passed away Monday, April 23, 2007. Born
October 2, 1919, she was the daughter of Carson William Hodges and
Georgia Dudley Derrick Hodges. She is survived by her six children:
John (Jack) Hammond Stillman, Jr. and his wife, Judy, of Atlanta,
Carson Williams (Bill) Stillman, and his wife, Nancy, of South Boston,
Virginia (Jill) Hiner and her husband, Lucien (Butch) of Richmond,
Elizabeth Lawson Greenwood and her husband, Jerry, of Wilmington, NC,
Scott Traynham Stillman and his wife, Lisa, of Atlanta; and Ann Emory
Brewer and husband John of Richmond. Mrs. Stillman is also survived by
one sister, Hilda Moody of Richmond. In addition to her husband she
was preceded in death by one sister, Virginia Bowers. Ten
grandchildren survive as well as eleven great grandchildren.
Until becoming disabled Mrs. Stillman lived in the home place (Oak
Circle which was erected in 1848) her entire life. She graduated from
Wilson Memorial High School and attended both Westhampton (University
of Richmond) and Mary Washington University. She taught at the old
Elwood School near her home several years and was a librarian at the
Halifax County Public Library 27 years. After retirement she served as
a volunteer for the Halifax County Literacy Program.
In 1967 she was selected by the South Boston Retail Merchants
Association and South Boston Woman's Club Mother of the Year. Arbor
Baptist Church was her home church her entire life. There she served
as WMU director, Sunday school director and teacher.
A funeral service will be held at Arbor Baptist Church on Thursday,
April 26 at 2:00 p.m. with Rev. Thomas Wright officiating. The family
received visitors at Powell Funeral Home Wednesday evening from 7 to

 Mr. Frank Traynham
Mr. Frank Traynham, 56, of West Haven, CT, formerly of Halifax County,
died Monday, April 23, 2007. He was born in Halifax County on November
12, 1950, a son of the Mrs. Lottie Jones Traynham and the late Mr.
Bennie Traynham and was a member of Pleasant Grove Baptist Church.
In addition to his mother, he is survived by one sister, Mrs. Hattie T.
Britton of Clover; four brothers, Mr. Roy Traynham of Crystal Hill, Mr.
Howard Jones of Baltimore, MD, Mr. Walter Traynham and Mr. Rickey
Traynham, both of New Haven, CT; three grandchildren, four
sisters-in-law, one brother-in-law, two aunts, other relatives and
friends. He was preceded in death by one daughter, Ms. Tywanna Nixon,
two sisters, Ms. Viola Traynham and Ms. Elnora Traynham and three
brothers, Mr. Roger Traynham, Mr. William Traynham and Mr. James
Traynham.
Funeral services will be held Saturday, April 28 at 2:00 p.m. at
Pleasant Grove Baptist Church with Rev. Ronald Claiborne officiating.
Burial will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive
friends at 5118 Newbill School Road, Clover.

 

 Mrs. Berta Murphy Farmer
Mrs. Berta Murphy Farmer, 81, of 406 Oak Lane, South Boston died
Wednesday, April 25, 2007 at Halifax Regional Hospital. Born in Halifax
County on February 19, 1926, she was the daughter of the late Ernest
Murphy and Eva Wilborn Murphy and was married to the late Henry Scott
Farmer. She was a homemaker and a charter member of the South Boston
Church of God.
Mrs. Farmer is survived by a son, Ronnie Hayes of Halifax, a daughter,
Carolyn Conner of South Boston, three sisters, Anna M. Blanks of Alton,
Marie M. Garrett of Martinsville and Margaret Edwards of Arden, NC,
three grandsons Timothy Conner of South Boston and Ronnie Hayes, Jr.
and Michael Johns, both of Halifax and a granddaughter, Michelle Johns,
also of Halifax. She was preceded in death by a brother, Watson C.
Murphy.
A funeral service for Mrs. Farmer will be conducted on Saturday, April
28 at 3 p.m. at the South Boston Church of God with the Rev. Bruce Hagy
officiating. Burial will follow in Halifax Memorial Gardens. The family

Mr. Wayne Edward Hoy

Mr. Wayne Edward Hoy, 67, died Wednesday, April 25, 2007. He was raised
in Clover.
He is survived by his wife of 48 years, Elsie Covington Hoy, two
children and their spouses, Hunter Wayne Hoy and wife, Donna K. and Jo
Ellen H. Gray and husband, George W.; two brothers Terry H. Hoy and
Thomas L. Hoy, four grandchildren, Taylor Hoy, Chad Hoy, Chase Gray and
Hailey Hoy, an aunt, Louise S. Collins; and several nieces and nephews.
Mr. Hoy was a retired school teacher and coach for the Henrico County
School System for 33 years and 32 years at Douglas S. Freeman High
School. He also served as director of Kanawha Recreation Association
for 30 years. He was a member of Tuckahoe Masonic Lodge No. 347, the
Scottish Rite Bodies and also ACCA Temple Shrine (Klown Unit). Remains
rest at the West Chapel of the Bennett Funeral Home, 11020 W. Broad
Street, Richmond. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. on
Thursday and Friday, where funeral services will be conducted Saturday
at 11 a.m. with interment at Greenwood Memorial Gardens. Memorial
contributions may be made to the Shriners Hospital for Crippled
Children, 3551 N. Broad, St., Philadelphia, Pa 19140.
 

Mrs. Judy Harris Warren

Mrs. Judy Harris Warren of 753 Edwin Robertson Road, Roxboro, NC died
Tuesday, April 24, 2007 at Duke University Medical Center at the age of
80. Born in Halifax County on March 12, 1927 to the late Mr Elijah
Harris and Mrs. Amanda Pointer Harris, she was married to the late Mr.
Weldon U. Warren and was a member of St. Mark Baptist Church.
Mrs. Warren is survived by a daughter, Mrs. Ruby Rogers of Roxboro, NC,
two sons, Mr. Cecil L. Harris and Mr. Lawrence L. Harris, both of
Roxboro, NC, seven grandchildren, 13, great grandchildren, a
daughter-in-law, Mrs. Jacqueline Harris and a host of nieces, nephews,
other relatives and friends. She was preceded ind eath by two sisters,
Mrs. Ruth Royster and Mrs. Berta Mitchell, seven brothers, Mr. Willie
Harris, Mr. Elijah Harris, Mr. Richard Harris, Mr. Ralph Harris, Mr.
Claude Harris, Mr. Grant Harris and Mr. John Harris.
A funeral service for Mrs. Warren will be conducted on Saturday, April
28 at 11 a.m. at St. Mark Baptist Church with the Rev. Herbert
Pettiford officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. The
family will receive friends at the home, 753 Edwin Robertson Road,
Roxboro, NC,
