Obituaries Mr. Carl Benjamin Compton
Mr. Carl Benjamin Compton of 1035 Dove Lane, Scottsburg died
Saturday,
April 7, 2007 at his home. Born in Halifax County on March 10,
1926, he
was 81 at the time of his death. He was the son of the late
Charlie
Compton and Fannie Chafin Compton and was married to the late
Janie
Elizabeth McDaniel Compton. He was a member of the Bethel Baptist
Church and was a WWII Army veteran.
Mr. Compton is survived by three sons, Tommy Compton and wife,
Rose
Lane of Scottsburg, Steve Compton and wife Susan of Chesterfield
and
Anthony Compton and wife Charlotte of Scottsburg and eight
grandchildren, Kimberly, Tina, Alan, Dana, Kelly, Brian, Jamie and
Kelli and fourteen great grandchildren with a special thanks to
Ann
Williams. Graveside services for Mr. Compton will be conducted on
Monday, April 9 at 11 a.m. at Bethel Baptist Church cemetery with the
Rev. Tom Walker officiating. The family will receive friends at his
home, 1035 Dove
Lane, Scottsburg.
Mrs. Martha Smith Barnes
Mrs. Martha Smith Barnes of 1083 Bagwell Drive, Scottsburg died
Friday,
April 6, 2007 at her home. Born in Halifax County on November 17,
1923,
she was 83 at the time of her death. She was the daughter of the
late
Harold Morgan Smith and Isabel Clay Smith. She was of the Baptist
faith.Mrs. Barnes is survived by a daughter, Margie Bowers and
husband Harold of South Boston, two sisters, Bessie Wilmouth and Frances
King, both of Scottsburg and a brother, William Smith of Richmond, a
granddaughter,
Sheryl McWilliams of Topsham, Maine and one great granddaughter,
Jasmine McWilliams of Topsham, Maine.She was preceded in death by
two brothers, Frank and Freddie Smith and a sister, Mary Smith.Graveside
services for Mrs. Barnes will be conducted on Monday, April 9 at 11 a.m.
at Antioch Baptist Church cemetery with the Rev. Daniel Darrikhuma
officiating. The family will receive friends at the home of Margie and
Harold Bowers, 601 Forest Drive, South Boston. For memorials please

Mr. Roger Lindberg Traynham
Mr. Roger Lindberg Traynham of 213 Leigh Street, South Boston died
Friday, April 6, 2007 at Halifax Regional Hospital at the age of
31.
Born in Queens, New York on October 12, 1975 to the late Mr. Roger
Lindberg Traynham, Sr. and Mrs. Marthetta Williams Traynham, he
was a
member of El-Bethel Cathedral Ministries.
Mr. Traynham is survived by a brother, Mr. Reginald Traynham of
South
Boston, an uncle, Mr. Joseph Traynham of South Boston, two aunts,
Ms.
Minnie Traynham of Crystal Hill and Mrs. Ada Traynham of
Arlington, a
niece, Ms. Armgonii Traynham of South Boston and a devoted friend,
Ms.
LaFaye Owen of South Boston, and a host of cousins, other
relatives and
friends.A funeral service for Mr. Traynham will be conducted
Tuesday, April 10
at 11 a.m. at the Crawford House Chapel in Halifax with Bishop
John
Williams officiating. Burial will follow in the Crystal Hill
Baptist

Mr. James Arthur Faulkner
Mr. James Arthur Faulkner of South Boston died Thursday, April 5,
2007
at his home at the age of 70. Born in Halifax County on February
18,
1937, he was the son of Mrs. Lillian Guthrie Faulkner and the late
Mr.
William Faulkner. He was first married to the late Mrs. Donna Ward
Faulkner and later to Mrs. Shirley Tyree Faulkner. He was a member
of
Mt. Olive Baptist Church.
Mr. Faulkner is survived by his wife of the home, one daughter,
Mrs.
Valerie Williams of Yonkers, NY, two granddaughters, Ms. Jaranea
Davis
of Elmsford, NY and Ms. Jazzomd Opie of New Canton, a grandson,
Mr.
John Riley Farmer of Elmsford, NY, his mother of South Boston, a
brother, Mr. William Faulkner of South Boston, a son-in-law, Mr.
William Opie of New Canton, five brothers-in-law, Mr. Finnie Tyree
and
Mr. John Tyree, both of Chrleston, WV, Mr. Gilbert Tyree of
Birmingham, AL, Mr. Jackie Cook of Rochester, NY and Mr. David
Tyree of
Yonkers, NY, six sisters-in-law, Mrs. Eva Tucker and Mrs. Ruth
Whitehead, both of Mount Vernon, NY, Mrs. Dorothy Tyree of
Rochester,
NY, Mrs. Charlotte White and Mrs. Katie Tyree, both of Charleston,
WV
and Mrs. Ida Cook of Columbia, SC and a host of nieces, nephews,
cousins, other relatives and friends.
Mr. Faulkner was preceded in death by a daughter, Mrs. Sharon Ward
Opie.
A funeral service for Mr. Faulkner will be conducted Tuesday,
April 10
at 1 p.m. at Mt. Olive Baptist Church with the Rev. Sandy Palmer
officiating. Burial will follow in the Rose Garden cemetery. At
the
family’s request, there will be no public viewing. In lieu of
floral
arrangements, the family requests donations to the Halifax County
Cancer Association, 1710 Jeffress Boulevard, South Boston, VA

Mr. Harry Wilson Clark
Mr. Harry Wilson Clark, 88, of 7190 Oak Level Road, Halifax died
Wednesday, April 4, 2007 at the home of his daughter. He was born
in
Halifax County on September 3, 1918, a son of the late Alpha Beta
Clark
and Flossie C. Clark and was married to the late Miriam Young
Clark.
He was a member of Dan River Baptist Church, serving on the board
of
deacons, Sunday school superintendent and usher and was a World
War II
Army veteran. He is survived by one son, Dale Young Clark and wife
Wanda of Marietta, GA; one daughter, Susan C. Hoskins and husband Randy
of Halifax; one brother, Allen Berkley Clark of Fallbrooks, CA; one
sister, Lois Inez Clark of Halifax; five grandchildren, David, Aaron and
Bradley Clark,
Melanie Hoskins, Miriam Hoskins. He was preceded in death by three
sisters, Elease Childrey, Elva Alexander and Hazel Lovelace and
one
brother, Earl G. Clark.Funeral services were held Saturday, April
7 at 11:00 a.m. at Dan River Baptist Church with Rev. Doug Gibson
officiating. Burial followed in the church cemetery. Memorials may be

Anna Marie Leach Whitefield Oakes
Anna Marie Leach Whitefield Oakes, 80, of Stephens City died
Thursday,
April 5, 2007 at her residence. She was born April 22, 1926 in
Brushey
Run, WV, a daughter of Lester Marshall and Susannah Randall Leach.
She
was a retired United States Postal worker and a member of Rosedale
Baptist Church, Winchester. She was married to John Thomson
Whitfield
and then the late Robert Henry Oakes, formerly of South Boston.
She is survived by three daughters, Lillias Susan Kelley of
Frederick,
MD, Jeannene Marie Mitchell of Chambersburg, PA and Velma Louise
Whitefield of West Palm Beach, FL; a son, William Lester
Whitefield of
Mt. Airy, MD; a step-daughter, Carol Ann Fisher of Phoenix, AZ;
eight
grandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren, and three great-great
grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a brother, Charles
Randall
Leach.Funeral services were held Saturday, April 7 at Rosedale
Baptist Church
with Rev. David Martin officiating. Burial followed in Old Stone
Cemetery in Frederick County, Virginia.
