Obituaries Ms. Geneva Yvonne Fowlkes
Ms. Geneva Yvonne Fowlkes, 84, of Baltimore, MD died March 25,
2007 at
Sinai Hospital, Baltimore.
Graveside services were held Tuesday, April 3 at the Coleman
Family
Cemetery, Virgilina.
Mrs. Barbara Gill-Barksdale
Mrs. Barbara Gill-Barksdale, 65, of New York died Wednesday, March
28,
2007 at Tish Hospital, New York. She was born in Miami, FL on
December
31, 1941, a daughter of the late Ernestine Chess Barker and
Benjamin
Gill and was married to Mr. Willie Lynwood Barksdale and was a
member
of Mt. Lebanon Baptist Church, Brooklyn, NY.
In addition to her husband, she is survived by three aunts, Mrs.
Odessa
Canty, Mrs. Verdella Marshall, Mrs. Wilhemina Davis; one uncle,
Mr.
James Gill, other relatives and friends.
Funeral services were held Wednesday, April 4 at 2:00 p.m. at
Sunflower
Baptist Church with Pastor Robert Tucker officiating. Burial
followed
in Oak Ridge Cemetery.
Mr. Kevin Wayne Talbott
Mr. Kevin Wayne Talbott, 29, of 1057 Paradise Road, Alton died
Sunday,
April 1, 2007. He was born in South Boston on August 18, 1977, a
son
of Curtis Wayne Talbott and Mary Pierce Talbott and was of the
Baptist
faith.
In addition to his parents, he is survived by two sisters, Donna
Talbott of Waynesboro and Tammy T. Child and husband Chad of South
Boston; one brother, Curtis Neil Talbott of South Boston; his
maternal
grandmother, Myrtle Ray of Clarksville; one daughter, Brooklyn
Marie
Talbott of South Boston; a niece and nephew, Lauren and Drew
Tetterton;
and a special friend, Nicole Parker.
Funeral services were held Wednesday, April 4 at 11:00 a.m. at
Powell
Funeral Home with Rev. Jack Stewart and Rev. Richard Saunders
officiating. Burial followed in Halifax Memorial Gardens.
Mrs. Lorine Yancey Granger
Mrs. Lorine Yancey Granger, 80, of 5133 Clays Mill Road,
Scottsburg
died Monday, April 2, 2007 at Halifax Regional Hospital. She was
born
in Halifax County on February 10, 1927, a daughter of the late
James
Henry Yancey and Gertie Smith Yancey and was married to Billy
Marshall
Granger. She was a member of Winns Creek Baptist Church.
In addition to her husband, she is survived by one son, Bill
Granger
and wife Susan of Halifax; one grandson, Drew Granger; one sister,
Jean
Y. Martin of South Boston. She was preceded in death by a
daughter,
Joan Dale Granger and one sister, Lucille Covington.
Funeral services were held Wednesday, April 4 at 2:00 p.m. at
Winns
Creek Baptist Church with Rev. Dr. Tim Madison, Rev. James Kopco
and
Father David Booher officiating. Burial followed in the church
cemetery.
Mr. Otis Bowie Snead
Mr. Otis Bowie Snead, Jr., 85, of 1051 Wolftrap Road, South Boston
died
Monday, April 2, 2007 at Halifax Regional Hospital. He was born in
Halifax County on June 4, 1921, a son of the late Otis Bowie
Snead, Sr.
and Lucy Bell Watts Snead and was married to Violet Ebbert Snead.
He
was a member of Beth Car Baptist Church and Staunton School for
the
Deaf Football Hall of Fame.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by three sons, Darius
Snead and
wife Rachel of South Boston, Dennis H. Snead and wife Angela of
South
Boston, Dan Lloyd Snead and wife Gwynn of Halifax; ten
grandchildren
and seven great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by one
sister,
Mirian S. Atwood.
Graveside services were held Wednesday, April 4 at 2:00 p.m. at
Oakland
Cemetery with Nathan Good officiating.
Rev. Dr. Emmett H. Jeffress
Rev. Dr. Emmett H. Jeffress, 77, of Rensselaer, NY, formerly of
Scottsburg, died March 28, 2007 in New York. He was born in
Halifax
County on February 15, 1930, a son of the late Rev. Henry Jeffress
and
Mrs. Vealer Richardson Jeffress. He was married to Mrs. Dolly M.
Jeffress and was pastor of Wilborn Temple First Church of God in
Christ, Albany, NY and was a United States Army veteran.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by one daughter, Ms.
Louise
Cooper of Danville; one brother, Rev. Freddy Jeffress and
sister-in-law
Edith of Scottsburg; two sisters, Mrs. Gracie Coleman and
brother-in-law Aaron and Mrs. Mary Davenport and brother-in-law
Jake,
all of Scottsburg; three grandchildren, one great-grandchild,
other
relatives and friends.
Funeral services were held Wednesday, April 4 at 11:00 a.m. at
Wilborn
Temple Church, Albany, NY. On Friday, April 6, the remains will
lie-in-state at Crawford House Chapel, Halifax and the family will
receive friends from 11:00 a.m.-1:00 p.m. Thereafter, graveside
services will be held at Spanish Grove on Friday with Military
Rites by
American Legion Post 99.
Mrs. Irene Copley Jones
Mrs. Irene Copley Jones, 89, of 1808 Vaughan Street, South Boston
died
Monday, April 2, 2007 at her home. She was born in Halifax County
on
November 25, 1917, a daughter of the late Bessie Clements Copley
and
Charles O. Copley and was married to the late Leroy Wilson Jones,
Sr.
She was a member of First Baptist Church where she worked with the
nursery for 31 years.
She is survived by one daughter, Ramah Hope Reynolds and husband
Greg
of Vienna; one son, Leroy W. "Butch" Jones of Scottsburg; special
family friends, Katie, Ryan and Jaden DeJarnette, Hick and Heather
Wilson; one grandson, Eric Reynolds; one granddaughter, Kristine
Reynolds; one sister, Doris C. Clarke of Richmond. She was
preceded in
death by one sister, Evelyn Hupp, four brothers Marvin Copley,
Oswald
Copley, Thurman Copley and Charles Copley.
Funeral services will be held today at 2:00 p.m. at Powell Funeral
Home
Chapel with Rev. Dr. Tim Cannon officiating. Burial will follow in
Halifax Memorial Gardens. Memorials may be directed to Patrick
Henry

Mr. Willie Easley Carrington
Mr. Willie Easley Carrington, 79, of 621 Webster Street, South
Boston
died Saturday, March 31, 2007 at Halifax Regional Hospital. He was
born in Halifax County on September 29, 1927, a son of the late
Mr.
Willie F. Carrington and Mrs. Nannie Crawley Carrington.
He is survived by one brother, Mr. Samuel R. Carrington of
Cleveland,
OH; four sisters, Mrs. Elizabeth Gerst and Mrs. Ida Faulkner, both
of
South Boston, Mrs. Susie Buie and Mrs. Mildred Smith, both of
Capitol
Heights, MD; one sister-in-law, Mrs. Ethel Carrington; two nieces,
Mrs.
Jeanne Holmes (Charles) and Mrs. Elizabeth Buckman (Curtis); two
nephews, Mr. James Smith, Jr. and Mr. Samuel Carrington
(Victoria); two
great nieces, one great nephew, other relatives and friends.
Funeral services will be held Saturday, April 7 at 1:00 p.m. at
Jeffress Funeral Home with Rev. Haywood Jennings officiating.
Burial
will follow in Oak Ridge Cemetery. The family will receive friends
at
621 Webster Street, South Boston.
