Mr. Anthony David “Tony” Franklin

Mr. Anthony David “Tony” Franklin of 5063 Clays Mill Road, Scottsburg died Saturday, January 27, 2007 in Halifax County. Born November 10, 1962, he was 44 at the time of his death. He was a sales engineer for Moore’s Electrical & Mechanical and was a member of Riverview Racing Mr. Franklin is survived by his father, David B Franklin and his mother, Priscilla W. Franklin, both of South Boston, his daughter Cathryn Leigh “Katie” Franklin of Scottsburg, a sister, Amanda Franklin Penzer and husband, Chris of Summerfield, NC, his grandmother, Eloise S. Franklin of South Boston, a nephew, Hunter Penzer and a niece, Taylor Penzer, Paula Franklin, Katie’s mother and Lisa Wallace, a special friend and a number of loving aunts, uncles, cousins and friends. He was preceded in death by his grandparents, Auther Clyde and Mildred Talbott Warren and his grandfather Lloyd Belt Franklin. A funeral service for Mr. Franklin will be conducted on Tuesday morning, January 30 at 11 a.m. at McCanless Memorial United Methodist with Rev. Phil Showers and Rev. Don Bryant officiating. Burial will follow in Halifax Memorial Gardens. Mr. Kevin Gaylord Parton

Mr. Kevin Gaylord Parton of 1121 Newton Farm Road, South Boston died Saturday, January 27, 2007 at MCV, Richmond at the age of 49. Born January 6, 1958 in Halifax County, he was a former member of the Halifax County Rescue Squad, the South Boston Volunteer Fire Company and the Cluster Springs Ruritan Club.Mr. Parton is survived by his wife, Debby Hazelwood Parton of the home, a daughter Lindsey Parton Fisher of South Boston, his mother, Janis Martin Whitt of Danville, his father, Thomas Cundiff of Charleston, SC, his granddaughter, Kaylee Jewel Fisher and his grandmother, Jewel Martin, both of South Boston. He was preceded in death by his stepfather, Ken Parton and his grandfather. Lucas “Dutch” Martin.
Funeral arrangements were incomplete at presstime and will be announced later by Brooks Funeral Home.


Ms. Dorothy Rea Hamlett


Ms. Dorothy Rea Hamlett, 68, of Baltimore, MD, formerly of Alton, died Tuesday, January 23, 2007. She was born in Alton, a daughter of the late Mr. John Hamlett and Mrs. Sallie Hamlett.
She is survived by two brothers, Mr. John E. Hamlett of Alton and Mr. A.L.
Hamlett of Greensboro, NC; other relatives and friends.
Funeral services were held Saturday, January 27 in Baltimore, MD.


Mr. Stacy LaPrade


Mr. Stacy LaPrade, 77, of Nathalie died Tuesday, January 23, 2007 at his home. He was the son of the late Mr. Jessie LaPrade and Mrs. Nannie Garland LaPrade.He is survived by one son, Sherman (Barbara) LaPrade; one grandson, Sam LaPrade; one sister, Christine Petty, all of Nathalie; three brothers, Leslie LaPrade of Rock Hill, SC, Paul LaPrade of Oakland, CA and Robert LaPrade of Brooklyn, NY; a devoted companion, Vivian Pringle of Nathalie and her family, Saundra, Cynthia, Wanda, Charles (Angela), Rodney, Edna, Samantha, Courtney, Timothy and Jordan Pringle; two sisters-in-law, Beatrice LaPrade and Jerolean Pannell, other relatives and friends.
Funeral services were held Sunday, January 28 at 2:00 p.m. at New Shiloh Baptist Church with Rev. Sylvester Crawley officiating. Burial followed in the church cemetery.


Mataline "Mattie" Powell Martin


Mataline "Mattie" Powell Martin, 71, of 3031 Clays Mill Road, Halifax died Friday, January 26, 2007 at Halifax Regional Hospital. She was born in Halifax County on August 14, 1935 and was married to the late Joseph L. Martin and was a member of Church of God of Prophecy. She is survived by three daughters, Joyce Guthrie and husband Jackie of Nathalie, Linda King and husband Tommy of Nathalie, Deborah Wooldridge and fiance Kenneth Hammock of Halifax; four sons, Ricky Martin and wife Ann of Roxboro, NC, Willie Martin of Crystal Hill, Jimmy Martin and fiance Deborah of Crystal Hill, Chris Martin and wife Lily Mae of Scottsburg; two brothers, Howard D. Powell of Clover and Wilson Powell of Clover; two sisters, Leola Welch of Randolph and Virginia Welch of South Boston; 16 grandchildren, 25 great-grandchildren; and special friend, William Harris of Nathalie and her devoted nurse, Cheryl Reynolds. She was preceded in death by one son, David Martin, one daughter, Dorothy Mae Martin, one brother Floyd Powell and one sister, Virginia Estelle Seamster. Funeral services were held Sunday, January 28 at 3:00 p.m. at Brooks Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Courtney W. Coffer officiating. Burial followed at Clover Cemetery.


Mrs. Ruby Lee Rocker Younger 


Mrs. Ruby Lee Rocker Younger of South Boston died Monday, January 22, 2007 at The Woodview at the age of 68, A native of Mobile, Alabama she was born November 29, 1938 to the late Mr. Clarence Rocker and Mrs. Alma Burrell Rocker. She was a member of Dan River Bethel Baptist Church.
Mrs. Younger is survived by three sons, Mr. Johnnie Younger, Jr. of Temple, TX, Mr. Kevin Younger and Mr. Spyros Younger, both of Richmond, three sisters, Mrs. Johnnie Mae Campbell of Mobile, AL, Mrs. Barbara Short of Birmingham, AL and Mrs. Maxie Davis of Stafford, seven brothers, Mr.
Earlmere Rocker and Mr. Jerome Rocker, both of Citronelle, AL, Mr. Kenneth Rocker of Winston Salem, NC, Mr. Clarence Rocker of Atlanta, GS, Mr. Larry Rocker of New Orleans, LA, Mr. Ronnie Rocker of Stafford and Mr. Anthony Rocker of Mobile, AL, two brothers-in-law, seven sisters-in-law, a dedicated goddaughter and her mother, Ms. Melissa Clay and Mrs. Shelia Clay and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
A funeral service for Mrs. Younger was conducted on Saturday, January 27, at
1 p.m. at Dan River Bethel Baptist Church with the Rev. Dwight Wilkerson officiating. Burial followed in the church cemetery. Those wishing to give memorial contributions are asked to consider the American Cancer Association in memory of Ruby R. Younger.
