Melissie Cole Carter, 79, of Roxboro, N.C. died December 19, 2006, at Person Memorial Hospital. Born in Person County, Mrs. Carter was the daughter of the late Arthur Chappel and Mammie Wilbourn Cole, and was married to George Raymond Carter. She was a member of Mill Creek Baptist Church, the Todd Sunday School Class and sang in the church choir.Survivors include her husband; one daughter, Nancy Carter Hall and husband, Kenneth, of Sutherlin; three brothers, Arthur Cole of Mebane, N.C., Robert Fred Cole of Roxboro and Dandy Cole of Timberlake, N.C.; three sisters, Nannie Talley and Hattie Mae Warren, both of Alton, and Florence Yarboro of Roxboro; one grandchild, Dianna Wray Hall of Sutherlin; three step-grandchildren; and seven step great-grandchildren. Three sisters preceded Mrs. Carter in death.Funeal services will be held today, December 22, at 2 p.m. at Mill Creek Baptist Church by the Revs. Brian Hager and Tommy Robertson. Cary Lovelace Chandler

Cary Lovelace Chandler, 97, of 2009 Crawford Avenue, Halifax died December 20, 2006, at The Woodview.
Mrs. Chandler was born in Halifax County on February 16, 1909, to the late John Lovelace and Minnie Long Lovelace, and was married to the late Harrison Chandler. She was a member of Berry Hill Baptist Church.Survivors include five daughters, Bonnie Womack of Baltimore, Md., Novella Leigh of South Boston, Gladys Edmonds, Louise Chandler and Thelma Leigh, all of Halifax; three sons, Earl Chandler of Philadelphia, Pa., Lawrence Chandler and John Chandler, both of Halifax; and one sister, Sally Bowman of Pittsburgh, Pa. One son, Roger Chandler and one daughter, Alberta Williamson, preceded Mrs. Chandler in death.Funeral services will be held tomorrow, December 23, at 11 a.m. at Berry Hill Baptist Church with the Rev. Tommy Crews officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.The family will receive friends at the home. Thomas Bernard Cowden Jr.

Thomas Bernard Cowden Jr., 65, of South Boston died December 21, 2006, at Halifax Regional Hospital. He weas born in Red Bank, N.J. on March 24, 1941, the son of the late Thomas Bernard Cowden Sr. and Evelyn Doyd Cowden, and was married to Janet Brady Cowden.Mr. Cowden was a member of St. Paschal’s Catholic Church.
Survivors include his wife; two daughters, Dorothy Cowden of Plymouth, Conn. and Patricia C. Walton of Howell, N.J.; one son, Thomas B. Cowden III of Larkspur, Calif.; and one sister, Dorothy C. Duncan of High Land, N.J. Two brothers, Bruce and Bernie Cowden and one sister, Helen Keefer, preceded Mr. Cowden in death.A memorial service will be held tomorrow, December 23 at 2 p.m. at Powell Funeral Home Chapel with Father Steve Antes officiating.

John Thomas ‘Sye’ DeJarnette

John Thomas ‘Sye’ DeJarnette, 68, of 1921 Alderson Avenue, South Boston died December 18, 2006, at his home.Mr. DeJarnette was born in Halifax County on April 6, 1938, to the late Edward Moses DeJarnette and Louise Woodson DeJarnette. He was a member of Mt. Zion Holiness Church.Survivors include one brother, Joe L. DeJarnette of South Boston; one God-daughter, Zena A. Jeffress of South Boston; and other relatives and friends. Two sisters, Norma Jean Barksdale and Louise Barksdale; and one brother, George E. DeJarnette, preceded him in death.Funeral services for Mr. DeJarnette will be tomorrow, December 23, at 2 p.m. at Crawford House Chapel in Halifax with the Rev. Sandy Palmer officiating. Mary Lawson Hodges

Mary Lawson Hodges, 80, of Virginia Beach died December 20, 2006, at Our Lady of Perpetual Help in Virginia Beach.Mrs. Hodges was born in South Boston on August 30, 1926, the daughter of the late Joseph Stebbins Lawson and Elizabeth Houston Lawson, and was married to the late Alexander Westwood Hodges. She was a retired educator.
Survivors include three daughters, Mary Armistead Hodges Mack of Alexandria, Elizabeth Hodges Sheriff and husband, John, and Anne Westwood Hodges McLaughlin and her husband, Michael, all of Virginia Beach; eight grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; a sister, Margaret Lawson Craighill and her husband, Lloyd, of Lexington; and a sister-in-law, Kathryn Chaffin Lawson of South Boston. One son, Alexander Westwood Hodges Jr.; and one brother, Joseph Stebbins Lawson Jr., preceded Mrs. Hodges in death.Graveside services will be held at the Armistead Family Cemetery, 2042 Armistead Road, Nathalie at noon tomorrow, December 23.The family will receive friends from 1:30 until 3:00 p.m. at Four Oaks Restaurant on Seymour Drive in South Boston.Those wishing to give memorials are asked to consider the Patrick Henry Boys Home, the National Downs Syndrome Society, or the Arthritis Foundation.

Ruby Hite Jones

Funeral services for Ruby Hite Jones, 74, of Clarksville were held Thursday at Clarksville Baptist Church with interment at the Eternity Mausoleum in Oakhurst Cemetery. The Rev. Gregory Randall officiated.She died Tuesday, December 19, at MeadowView Terrace in Clarksville.Mrs. Jones was a daughter of Silas Costello and Hallie Nunn Hite, and the widow of Edward Earl Jones.She worked in retail and administration for many years at Burlington Industries, and at Clarksville Florist and Hite’s Department Store.Surviving Mrs. Jones are sons and daughters-in-law, Edward Earl Jr. and Lucy Jones of Fuquay-Varina, N.C., Jeffrey Hite and Carol Ann Jones of Clarksville, and Todd Scott and Tanya Jones of Nelson.Also surviving is one sister, Gwendolyn H. Christine A. Lewis, 79, of Richmond died December 18, 2006. She was the widow of William A. Lewis Sr. .Survivors include two sons, William A. Lewis Jr. and Thomas L. Lewis and his wife, Betty; her sister, Pauline Rousselle and her husband, Gene; two brothers, Charles Anderson and wife, Frances, and Kenneth Anderson and wife, Thyra; four grandchildren, Erin Ford and husband, Jimmy, Travis, Cara and Drew Lewis.A graveside service for Mrs. Lewis will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, December 27, at Republican Grove Methodist Church Cemetery in Halifax County.

Pearlie E. Logan Sr., 54, of Richmond, formerly of Halifax County, died December 16, 2006. He was born April 9, 1952, to the late James Younger and Irene Logan.Mr. Logan is survived by his friend, Cheryl Eldridge; three sons, Pearlie Logan Jr., Brandon Logan and Brenann Logan; one daughter, Brianna Logan, all of Richmond; one stepdaughter, Barbara Jean; one granddaughter, Kashay of Durham, N.C.; two sisters, Anna Petty of South Boston and Martha Reed of Vernon Hill; one brother, Roosevelt Logan of South Boston; and one brother-in-law, Lewis Reed of Vernon Hill.
Funeral services were held December 21, at 11 a.m. at Mimms Funeral Home Chapel in Richmond.Today, December 22, his remains will lie in state at County Line Baptist Church in Halifax County from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.

Bertha Fisher Motley

Bertha Fisher Motley, 94, of Nathalie died December 20, 2006, at The Woodview. She was born March 2, 1912, in Halifax County the daughter of George William Fisher and Lena Stowe Fisher and was married to Willie Raymond Motley.Mrs. Motley was a member of Catawba Baptist Church.Survivors include two daughters, Virginia M. Anderson and husband, Billy, of Nathalie, and Mary Edness Smith of Norfolk; four grandchildren, Carroll Anderson and wife, Marie, Regina LaPorte and husband, Gary, all of Nathalie, Lorrie Todd and husband, Richard, of Cary, N.C., and Ginger Abreu and husband, Wesley, of Virginia Beach; and five great-grandchildren. Seven brothers, George, Richard, Ocie, Horace, Floyd, Lewis and Roy Fisher; and four sisters, Lydia Fisher, Gracie Dodson, Thelma Wilkerson and Elsie Fisher, preceded Mrs. Motley in death.Funeral services will be held tomorrow, December 23, at 2 p.m. at Catawba Baptist Church with the Revs. Tony Sisk and David Dickerson officiating. Bernard Howard Wilkerson, 89, of 4080 Clays Mill Road, Halifax died December 20, 2006, at Halifax Regional Hospital.Mr. Wilkerson was born in Halifax County on December 9, 1917, to the late Willie Wilkerson and Ellen Foster Wilkerson and was married to the late Susie Penick Wilkerson. He was a member of Traynham Grove Baptist Church.
Survivors include five daughters, Laura W. Dance of Paterson, N.J., Yvonne W. Hankerson of Woodbridge, Althea W. Penick, Susan W. Wyche and Cecil Lorraine W. Dance, all of Halifax; one son, Richard R. Wilkerson of Halifax; 18 grandchildren; 29 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; one daughter-in-law, Emma Wilkerson of Halifax; three sons-in-law, William H. Hankerson of Alexandria, Ledges L. Penick and Lindbergh Wyche Jr., both of Halifax; two sisters-in-law, Mamie White and Amanda Wilkerson, both of Nathalie; and one brother-in-law, Lester Collins of Bennettsville, S.C.One son, Willie Junior Wilkerson; one grandson, Jeffrey Allen Wilkerson; four brothers Arthur, Durrell, Waverly and Willie Wilkerson; and one sister, Laura Wilkerson, preceded Mr. Wilkerson in death.
