Jane Elizabeth Tuck Dodge
Raleigh, NC - Jane Elizabeth Tuck Dodge,
62, of Raleigh and Hampstead, passed away suddenly on Wednesday,
December l3, 2006. Jane
is survived by her beloved husband of 34 years, Michael R. Dodge
and her loving sons; Jonathan and Will Dodge; her mother, Ruby
B. Tuck; her sisters Jean Tuck Brown and Mary Ruth Tuck and her
brother, Bill Tuck. She
was preceded in death by her father, Wilbur H. Tuck, Sr. a great
man and master educator. Jane
held an MAED in counseling from East Carolina University and was
a graduate of Camp Lejune High School.
She was employed by Wake County Schools as a career
development coordinator at Athens High School, Raleigh, N.C. and
formerly at Lakeside High School in Wilmington, N.C., where she
touched the lives of many young students.
She took great pride in the annual career fair, which
partnered with many local businesses to help students decide on
a career path. Jane was an artist, poet, and loved growning beautiful
flowers. She was so
proud of her family's heritage.
She was a true animal lover and leaves behind Nicki,
Rusty, Azure and Sampson, her special family cats.Funeral
services were held on Saturday, December l6, 2006 at 11:00 am at
Mitchell Funeral Home, 600 St. Mary's St., Raleigh, N.C.,
with family receiving friends one hour prior to the service from
10-11 a.m. Graveside
services followed at 3:00 p.m. at the Virgilina Cemetery in

Mrs. Edna Blanks Elliott
Mrs. Edna Blanks Elliott, 86, widow of
Carroll Edward Elliott, Sr. died Thursday, December 14, 2006 in
Halifax Regional Hospital. A native of Buffalo Springs, she was
a graduate of Clarksville High School with the Class of 1937 and
was a member of First Baptist Church and owner/operator of Town
and Country Beauty Salon in South Boston for many years.She is
survived by a son and daughter-in-law, Eddie and Candice Elliott
of Buffalo Junction; sister, Lela B. Walker of Clarksville;
granddaughters, Joanna Elliott and Callie Elliott; and great
granddaughter, Haley Small.
Memorials may be directed to a charity of your
choice.Graveside funeral services were held Sunday at Gravel
Hill Cemetery with Dr. Tim Cannon officiating.
Mrs. Verlie Mae Walker Carter
Mrs. Verlie Mae Walker Carter, 94, widow of
John Thomas Carter, died Friday, December 15, 2006 in Halifax
Regional Hospital. Native to Halifax County, NC, Mrs. Carter
worked at Gill’s Grill for many years.She is survived by a
daughter and son-in-law, Linda and Thomas Bowen of Virgilina;
daughter, Judy Treadway of Rocky Mount; sons and
daughters-in-law, Wayne and Jackie Carter of Limington, Maine
and Vernon and Elizabeth Walker of Wilson, NC; sisters, Rachel
Owen of Victoria, Naomi Beard of Roanoke Rapids and Lurleen
Wilson of Lillington, NC; 11 grandchildren, 20
great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.Graveside
services will be held today at 2:00 p.m. at Union Chapel Baptist
Church Cemetery with the Reverend Bill LaWall officiating.

Mrs. Celeste Jackson Holt, 74, of 609
Easley Street, South Boston died Tuesday, December 12, 2006 at
Prince George Hospital, Cheverly, MD.
She was born in Halifax County on July 4, 1928, daughter
of the late Mr. Thomas Jackson and Mrs. Lillian Jackson.
She was a member of First Baptist Church, South
Boston.She is survived by one daughter, Ms. Avis Jackson of
Washington, DC; three sons, Mr. Frank Williams, Mr. Richard Holt
and Mr. Robert Holt, all of Maryland; two sisters, Mrs. Ruby
Overby of Landover, MD and Mrs. Anne Shorter of Monticlair; one
brother, Mr. Thomas Jackson of Baltimore, MD; 13 grandchildren,
16 great-grandchildren, other relatives and friends.
She was preceded in death by one sister, Mrs. Lillian
Jackson.Funeral services will be held today at 12:00 at First
Baptist Church with Rev. Willie N. Yancey officiating.
Burial will follow in Oak Ridge Cemetery.

Mr. William Archer Walton, Sr., 79, of 2169
Sandy Beach Road, South Boston died the Woodview Wednesday,
December 13, 2006. He
was born in Halifax County on April 12, 1927, son of the late
Mr. Joseph Calvin Walton and Mrs. Bettie Bell Long and was first
married to Mrs. Annie Stovall Curtis and later married the late
Mrs. Mary Owen Walton.He is survived by three daughters, Mrs.
Gail W. Chandler of Omega, Mrs. Glenda M. Wilson of Alton, Ms.
Deborah Williams of Mobile, AL; one son, Mr. William A. Walton,
Jr. of Dumfries; two sisters, Mrs. Fannie Mae Medley of South
Boston and Mrs. Dorothy Featherston of Alton; one brother, Mr.
Charlie Walton of South Boston; 13 grandchildren, 23
great-grandchildren, five great-great-grandchildren; two
sons-in-law, Mr. Charles Chandler and Mr. Herman Williams, other
relatives and friends.Funeral services will be held today at
3:00 p.m. at Crawford House Chapel with Rev. Bruce Featherston
officiating. Burial will follow in Crossroad Baptist Church Cemetery.
Mr. Garland Monroe “Roe”
Cumbie
Mr. Garland Monroe “Roe” Cumbie of
South Boston died Friday, December 15, 2006 at McGuire Veterans
Hospital in Richmond. He was born September 21, 1931 in Halifax
County and was 75 at the time of his death. He was the son of
Willie Cumbie and Bessie Duffy Cumbie and was married to the
late Mildred Terry Cumbie. He was a member of the Mt. Laurel
United Methodist Church and was an Army veteran.Mr. Cumbie is
survived by one daughter, Judith Hodge of Turbeville, two
grandsons, James and Dave Hodge of Turbeville and one great
grandson, Damian James Hodge of Cluster Springs, a special
friend, Doris Conner of Nathalie, a sister, Doris Womack of
Scottsburg and one brother, Don Cumbie of Halifax. A
graveside service for Mr.Cumbie will be held Monday at 2 p.m. at
the Oak Level Presbyterian Church cemetery with the Rev. Jack
Stewart conducting the service. The family will receive friends
at the home ,8098 James D. Hagood Highway, Scottsburg.
Mrs. Lucille R. Hobstetter
Mrs. Lucille R. Hobstetter of South Boston
died Friday, December 15, 2006 at The Woodview Nursing Home.
Born March 17, 1907 in Halifax County, she was 99 at the time of
her death. She was the daughter of Louis Edward Russell and
Sally Luvinia Lewis and was married to the late Bill Hobstetter.
She was a member of the McCanless Memorial United Methodist
Church.Mrs. Hosbtetter is survived by a number of nieces and
nephews. She was preceded in death by four sisters, Peggy Riley,
Mae Carter, Iola Arnold and Elizabeth Conner and two brothers,
Henry Russell and Red Russell.A funeral service for Mrs.
Hobstetter will be conducted on Monday, December 18 at 2 p.m. at
Powell Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Phil Showers
officiating. Burial will follow in the Oak Level Presbyterian
Church cemetery. The family will receive friends one hour prior
to the service at Powell Funeral Home. For memorials, please
