Mr. Irby Whitt Young

Mr. Irby Whitt Young, 85, of Norfolk died November 29, 2006 at Bayside Health Center.  He was born October 14, 1922 in Person County, NC, a son of the late Pattie Whitt Young and James Young.  He was a U.S. Army World War II veteran and retired heavy machine operator for the City of Norfolk.He is survived by his long time friend and caregiver, Frances G. Battle of Norfolk; two sisters, Bettie Baker of Richmond and Elsie Jones of Roxboro, NC; sisters-in-law, Inzy Young, Cleo Procter and June Young.  He was preceded in death by one sister, Gladys Whitt and brothers Elmus Young, Willie Young, Rulford Young and Merritt Young.Funeral services were held Saturday, December 2 at H.D. Oliver Funeral Apartments Chapel with Rev. Donald Oday officiating.  Burial followed in Virgilina Cemetery.

Carroll Grey Mays

A memorial service for Carroll Grey Mays of Halifax will be held Wednesday, December. 6, at Beth Car Baptist Church with the Rev. Dr. Michael Parnell officiating.The family will receive friends in the church social hall following the service.Mr. Mays died Friday, December. 1, at his home.He was born January 16, 1935 in Covington and was 71 years old. He was a son of William Basil Mays and Bertha Craft Mays and was married to Elizabeth Carol Mays.Mr. Mays was a forestry major at Virginia Tech and employed by Westvaco and the Chesapeake Corporation. He was later self-employed as a pulpwood dealer and real estate developer, most recently managing Halifax Square Shopping Center.Mr. Mays served as a captain in the Army and the Reserves. He was the recipient of the Distinguished Rifleman Badge.
In addition to his wife, Mr. Mays is survived by one daughter, Deborah M. Tucciarone and husband Matthew of Amelia, and one son, William
Thomas Mays of Halifax.He was preceded in death by his parents and one brother, James Ellis Mays.

Michael Dwayne Saunders

Graveside services for Michael Dwayne Saunders of Alton will be held Tuesday, December 5 at 2 p.m. at Oak Ridge Cemetery.
Mr. Saunders died Saturday at Halifax Regional Hospital and was 45 years of age at the time of this death. He was born November 11, 1961 in Halifax County, the son of the late James Saunders and Betty Stephens Saunders and was married to Linda Kay Saunders. Mr. Saunders is survived by his wife; two sons, Zachary and James Dean “J.D.” Saunders of Alton; his mother; one sister, Vicky Saunders Pyatt of Greensboro, N.C.; and one nephew, Eron Pyatt of Greensboro.The family will receive friends at the home. Hallie Martin Puckett

Funeral services for Mrs. Hallie Martin Puckett will be held tomorrow, December 5 at 2 p.m., at First Baptist Church of Republican Grove, with the Revs. Shelton Miles and Dr. Melvin Bradshaw conducting the service. Mrs. Puckett, of Nathalie, died Sunday at Halifax Regional Hospital and was 87 years of age at the time of her death.She was born May 24, 1919 in Halifax County, the daughter of Felix Daniel Martin and Mary Emily Powell Martin and was married to the late Harold Thomas Puckett.Mrs. Puckett was a member of the First Baptist Church of Republican Grove.Hallie Martin Puckett is survived by two sons, Martin Thomas Puckett and wife Sharon of Gloucester and Billy Puckett and wife Debbie of South Boston; one grandson, Tony Puckett and wife Wendy of Martinsville; two great-grandchildren, Samantha and T.J. Puckett of Martinsville; and a number of nieces and nephews.The family will receive friends today, December 4, from 7:00 to 8:30 p.m. at Powell Funeral Home and other times at the home of Billy and Debbie Puckett, 4067 Virgie Cole Road, South Boston.
