Mrs. Bessie Green Outlaw Lewis

Mrs. Bessie Green Outlaw Lewis, 89, of Pomona Valley, CA, formerly of South Boston, died at Pomona Valley Hospital.  She was born in Halifax County on May 19, 1917, a daughter of the late Mr. William Glenn and Mrs. Ida Green Threet.  She was first married to the late Mr. Willie Outlaw and later married Mr. John C. Lewis.

She is survived by two daughters, Mrs. Barbara Crichlow of Pomona, CA and Mrs. Clarine Hill of Red Oak; two brothers, Mr. Henry Green of Washington, DC and Mr. Johnny Green of South Boston; six grandchildren, other relatives and friends.  She was preceded in death by three sisters, Ms. Mary Green, Ms. Mildred Green and Ms. Ida Frances Green and two brothers, Mr. Thomas Green and Mr. Joseph Green.

Funeral services will be held Saturday, February 10 at 2:00 p.m. at Jeffress Funeral Home with Rev. Thurman Betts officiating.  Burial will follow in Oak Ridge Cemetery.

Mr. William Claude Womack 

Mr. William Claude Womack, 82, of 1097 Sinai Road, South Boston died Sunday, February 4, 2007 at Halifax Regional Hospital.  He was born in Halifax County on October 30, 1924, a son of the late Mr. Willie Womack and Mrs. Annie Mae Vaden Womack and was married to Mrs. Bernice Davis Womack.  He was a World War II Army veteran and a member of St. Paul C.M.E. Church.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by four daughters, Mrs. Doris Thomas of Washington, DC, Mrs. Carolyn Fleming of Suitland, MD, Ms. Claudette Womack of Herndon and Ms. Annette Womack-Bonner of Virginia Beach; two sons, Mr. Warren L. Davis, Sr. of Ft. Washington, MD and Mr. Claude G. Womack of South Boston; 11 grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren; one brother, Mr. Oscar Womack of Nathalie; three sons-in-law, Mr. Albert Thomas, Mr. Journice Fleming and Mr. Robert C. Bonner; two daughters-in-law, Mrs. Lauri Davis and Mrs. Faye Womack; one aunt, Mrs. Elizabeth Vaden; other relatives and friends.  He was preceded in death by two daughters, Ms. Dianna Womack and Mrs. Vivian Lanier, one granddaughter, Ms. Lea Nicole Davis, one sister, Mrs. Hattie M. Terry and four brothers, Mr. George Womack, Mr. Lawrence Womack, Mr. Ivory Womack and Mr. Austin Womack.

Funeral services were held Wednesday, February 7 at St. Paul C.M.E. Church with Rev. Billy Cherry officiating.  Burial followed in the church cemetery with Military Rites by American Legion Post 99.

 

 Ms. Dorothy Stigall Glascock

Ms. Dorothy Stigall Glascock, 83, widow of Woodson Randall Glascock, died Monday, February 5, 2007 in Clarksville. A native of Person County, NC, and a daughter of the late Willis Johnston and Lena Seate Stigall, she was a graduate of Bethel Hill High School and a member of Union Christian Church all of her adult life. She was retired from Burlington Industries with over 20 years service.

She is survived by daughters, Teresa Elliott of Clarksville and Suellen Horton of Wake Forest, NC; son, Woodson Randall “Randy” Glascock, II of Ocracoke, NC; and sisters, Texie Humphries, Margaret Tuck, and Cordelia Morris, all of Roxboro, NC; and Martha “Tuny” Rice of Virgilina; seven grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.  She was preceded in death by one grandson.

Funeral services were held at Wednesday at Union Christian Church with Rev. Bobby Whitfield and Rev. Norman Talley officiating.  Burial followed in Virgilina Cemetery.

 Mr. Jesse Allen Meeler

Mr. Jesse Allen Meeler, Sr., 84, of 6012 Melon Road, South Boston died Monday, February 5, 2007 at Danville Regional Medical Center.  He was born in Halifax County on October 12, 1922, a son of the late Willie Floyd Meeler and Mary Murray Meeler and was married to Ann Barksdale Meeler.  He was a graduate of Ferrum Jr. College and attended William & Mary until joining the Navy.  He worked for Dan River Mills, York Corporation and Otis Elevator Company.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by two daughters, Mary "Bonnie" Briant of Seattle, WA and Nancy Testerman of Montgomery Village, MD; one son, Jesse Allen Meeler, Jr. of Newton, NJ; seven grandchildren, six great-grandchildren; one sister, Louise Hawley of Durham, NC; four brothers, W.F. Meeler of Norfolk, Wright Meeler of Jackson, MS, Jack Meeler of Alton and Mac Meeler of Sutherlin.  He was preceded in death by two brothers, Charlie Murray Meeler and Francis Meeler.

Funeral services were held Wednesday, February 7 at Mercy Seat Presbyterian Church with Rev. Dr. J. Edmond Melvin, Jr. officiating.  Burial followed in the church cemetery.  Memorials may be directed to Mercy Seat Perpetual Care Cemetery Fund, c/o John Barksdale, 7010 Melon Road, Sutherlin, VA 24594.

 Ms. Janie Daniel Berkley

Ms. Janie Daniel Berkley, 81, of 1403 Hodges Street, South Boston died Sunday, February 4, 2007 at Halifax Regional Hospital.  She was born in Halifax County on August 14, 1925, a daughter of the late Wesley Lafayette Daniel and Lottie Terry Daniel and was married to the late Leonard Ray Berkley.  She was a member of New Covenant Worship Center and was a retired employee of Burlington Industries, Inc.

She is survived by two daughters, Sherry B. Booker of Richmond and Sandra B. Wilson of South Boston; one son, Rickey Berkley of Danville; one sister, Thelma Davis of Vernon Hill; seven grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.  She was preceded in death by two brothers and two sisters.

Funeral services were held Tuesday at Brooks Funeral Home with Rev. Grant Dyer officiating.  Burial followed in Oak Ridge Cemetery.  Memorials may be directed to New Covenant Worship Center, 2173 Cherry Hill Church Road, South Boston, VA 24592.

 Mr. Howard Eugene "Gene" Mills

Mr. Howard Eugene "Gene" Mills, 77, of 201 Chalmers Street, South Boston died Monday, February 5, 2007 at Halifax Regional Hospital.  He was born in Halifax County on December 17, 1929, a son of the late Clyde Durant Mills and Violet Neal Mills and was married to Virla H. Mills.  He was a member of South Boston Church of God and was a member of American Legion Post 8.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by three sons, Billy L. Mills of Florence, SC, Kenneth E. Mills of South Boston and Curtis D. Mills of Kissimeee, FL; one daughter, Charlotte M. Compton of Scottsburg; 13 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.  He was preceded in death by one sister, Thelma Toombs.

Funeral services were held Wednesday, February 7 at South Boston Church of God with Rev. Dr. Bruce Hagy officiating.  Burial followed in Oak Ridge Cemetery.  Memorials may be directed to the South Boston Church of God Renovation Fund, 3000 Halifax Road, South Boston, VA 24592.

 Mr. Flave Edward Brown

Mr. Flave Edward Brown, 61, of Roxboro, NC, formerly of Halifax County, died Wednesday, January 31, 2007 at Duke University Hospital.  He was born in Clover on December 5, 1946, a son of the late Mr. Adolphus N. Brown and Mrs. Emma Ewell Brown.  He was married to Mrs. Odelia Street Brown and was a former member of Bethel Grove Baptist Church.

Services were held in Roxboro, NC at Elijah Grove Baptist Church.
