The Halifax County School Board proposes closing historic Halifax Elementary on Mountain Road but hanging onto the building for use as central office space, a pre-K site, for one of its academies or as a multi-use building combining two of those options. The crowded central offices are now at the Mary Bethune complex, where they are running out of space. Superintendent Paul Stapleton said he could not imagine a more attractive office, and he would welcome a mix of students and personnel. Halifax students would be folded into Sinai Elementary in a rezoned, smaller K-5 school. Sinai Elementary currently has 321 students. (Eva Cassada photo) (more)
