PLEASE DUNK ME — Stanley Noblin, who is running for Sheriff of Halifax
County, was anxious for someone to drop him from the dunking booth
yesterday at the North Halifax Volunteer Fire Department Marathon since
the heat was pretty intense. (SOMcL photo)

It was hot... so hot, but the North Halifax Volunteer Fire Department
had one of the largest crowds ever for their annual fundraising
Marathon on Saturday. According to Chief L. C. Fisher, the department
expects to clear between $27,000 to $28,000 for all their hard work.
"This community has always been good to us and we, in turn, have tried
to be good to them," Fisher said.
Most of the money from the Marathon will go towards the construction of
a new fire station which will have room to house all the department's
rescue and fire vehicles. Final plans for the station were available
during the Saturday Marathon and Fisher said he expects bids to go out
within the next month to six weeks. "We're working with our architect,
Kelvin Moore of Moore and Goldmon of Lynchburg, to finalize our plans
so we can go out to bid," Fisher said.
Liberty Fire Department took first place in the Fireman's competition,
with Scottsburg coming in second, Halifax, third and Triangle fourth.
Margaret Clark of Appomattox was the lucky winner of the beautiful
handmade quilt which was raffled off at the end of the day.
Fisher said donations and pledges made to the department exceeded those
of years past as they totaled $14,366. The Ladies Auxiliary grossed
$18,354 with their quilt raffle and sale of food. While expenses have
yet to be totaled, Fisher estimated they would run no more than $4,000
to $5,000. "We just appreciate all the hard work our members and Ladies
Auxiliary members did to make this such a successful day. And we thank
all of you who turned out to support us," he added.
Every bit of the 500 gallons of Brunswick stew was sold an nearly all
of the 768 pounds of barbeque, as well as the 200 pounds of fried
chicken.
"It was just a great day," Fisher concluded.
