SEEKING RE-ELECTION — Halifax County Commonwealth’s Attorney Kim Slayton White announced on Friday that she will seek re-election to her

post in the upcoming November General Election. (SOMcL photo)

Halifax County Commonwealth's Attorney Kim Slayton White on Friday
morning announced that she will seek re-election to her current post.
Joined by Halifax County Sheriff D.J. Oakes and members of his
department, along with leaders of the Republican Party in front of the
Halifax County Courthouse, Ms. White reviewed the promises she had made
back when she was first elected three and a half years ago.
Following is her complete statement: "Four years ago, I made promises
to the citizens of Halifax County:
"I promised that I would work together with local, state and federal
law enforcement to fight crime in our community. Over the last 3 1/2
years, we have worked with the Sheriff's Office, South Boston Police
Department, Halifax Police Department, the State Police, ATF, United
States Attorneys, Virginia Attorney General's Office, and others to
investigate and prosecute violent and predatory criminals. We've seen
them be put away for significant amounts of time, ensuring that our
streets are safe.
"I promised, four years ago, that I would hire the best and most
qualified attorneys as prosecutors. The attorneys in my office have
been educated in some of the finest institutions in this country —
among them, VT, UVA, W&M, American U, Boston College. Each is a
graduate of the specializing school for prosecutors administered by the
National District Attorneys Association. A number of us are
instructors not only for state-wide audiences but also national ones.
Each attorney is well prepared for their responsibilities. They have
proven to be tough but compassionate.
"We have secured life sentences for murders, child predators and drug
dealers. We have taken thieves, sex offenders, and other dangerous
criminals off of our streets.
"Four years ago, I promised that community out-reach would be a major
part of my mission.
"Whether the audience has been large, like that for all faculty and
staff of the school system or small, like that for a prayer circle at a
local church, I have had the opportunity to speak with the citizens on
issues of importance. Among others who have been addressed are civic
groups, churches, students, chamber of commerce groups, Ruritan clubs,
and law enforcement groups.
"The Community-out reach I am most proud of involves the formation of
the Anti-Gang Task Force. Over three years ago, I saw the gang
problems in surrounding jurisdictions and realized that we, as a
community needed to take action. The community loudly and clearly
agreed with me. So many have volunteered their time and skills to the
Anti-Gang Task Force. The volunteers come from the areas of law
enforcement, corrections, probation, education, government, civic,
churches, businesses. "Together we have made a difference - we've
raised the awareness of the community, of our educators - we've
published an awareness brochure - we've brought an anti-gang
curriculum, taught by law enforcement members of the Task Force, to
every 6th grader in the county.
"My mission is not complete. Today I announce that I will seek another
four year term as Commonwealth's Attorney for Halifax County. I will
ensure that our prosecutors seek justice in every case we handle I
will insist on continued effective, thorough and competent
investigations from our law enforcers. I will dedicate a significant
amount of time to efforts at crime prevention - particularly aimed at
our youth for a safe and thriving community depends upon it.
"I would be honored by the support and ask for the votes of my fellow
citizens," she concluded during her Friday announcement.
