Hunter hit in chest by buckshot

SoVaNow.com / November 23, 2010
Thirty-six-year-old Bobby Joe Overby of Virgilina was struck in the left chest Tuesday about 2:30 p.m. while hunting off Bold Springs Road southwest of South Boston. He was first transported to Halifax Regional Hospital and then to Duke University Medical Center.

A spokesman with the Virginia Department of Game and Inland Fisheries, Julia Dixon, said Overby was hunting when a single buckshot pellet, fired from a shot by Ceciley Nicole Smith, 22, of South Boston, hit him. Smith was firing at a deer that came between Smith and Overby, she said.

Both hunters were wearing blaze orange,
Dixon said.

Overby’s condition was not available. The incident is under investigation.
