Sports ‘We want it this year’ - McCaskillSoVaNow.com / March 10, 2010
“We are hoping this is the year. We’ve been close, but we want to win the championship this year,” veteran NASCAR Whelen All-American Late Model Stock Car Division competitor Deac McCaskill said Saturday shortly before heading back onto the four-tenths mile asphalt at South Boston Speedway for more practice.McCaskill finished third in the Late Model Stock Car title chase at South Boston Speedway in 2008 and was fourth last year after posting a pair of victories. “We want it this year,” McCaskill said of a championship at America’s Hometown Track. “I think we’ve got a good shot if we can just be consistent.” McCaskill will begin his bid for a NASCAR Whelen All American Series track championship Saturday when South Boston Speedway opens the 2010 campaign with the running of the NASCAR Whelen All-American Series Twin 75’s race program. The event will have a special 2 p.m. starting time. Highlighting the five-race program will be a pair of 75-lap races for the NASCAR Whelen All-American Late Model Stock Car Division. “Qualifying is going to be key and with twin races that means I need to get two good qualifying runs in,” McCaskill said. “We’ve been pretty good in qualifying the last couple of years, so hopefully that will be the case this year.” The perfect start to the season for McCaskill would obviously be two wins this weekend, but he knows consistency will also be a huge factor. “It would be nice to get a lot of wins this year because of the bonus points,” McCaskill said. “They add up in the long haul. Our goal is to get a lot of wins this year and also to be consistent.” Also featured as part of Saturday afternoon’s race program will be events for the Limited Sportsman Division, the Budweiser Pure Stock Division and the Southern Vintage Modifieds. Pit gates will open Saturday at 9 a.m. and practice for all divisions will be held from 10:30 a.m.-noon. Grandstand gates will open at noon and qualifying time trials will get cranked up at 12:45 p.m. Admission will once again be $10 for adults and children six and under will be admitted free.
