Sports Puryear’s business model makes senseSoVaNow.com / March 10, 2010
Stacy Puryear has a business model that makes sense. He is also having fun, approaching his 40s. He’s made a mark on the local racing scene. But the local veteran is still hunting for a dramatic payday once in awhile. “Our plans are to try to run the bigger money races this year, move around a little more than we’ve done the last two seasons,” said Puryear, during a break in Saturday’s test session at South Boston Speedway. He said he would try to run eight or ten late model races at SBS, including the opener. “We’ve missed racing here. It was just the motor deal. We could run the crate motor at Orange (County Speedway). We didn’t have a built motor. We were able to secure a built motor over the winter. Hopefully, we’ll be able to run quite a bit here and in some of the bigger money races,” said Puryear. Puryear won the OCS late model track championship two seasons ago and came close last year. He led the points all year long, from the first race until the final event. “Going into the last race, we had a flat tire and lost the championship by four points,” said Puryear, ruefully. David Triplett won the track title by four points. Puryear was at SBS, getting ready for Saturday’s Twin 75s format. “It’s Twin 75s, a lot of people don’t like Twin Races. We’re just coming out here to try to win, try to do the best we can. We’ve got nothing to prove to anybody. “Hadn’t been here in a while. We’re just coming out here to have fun and just race a little more at home,” said Puryear. His aspirations for 2010 include winning a race at SBS, and cracking Victory lane at another big-money race. He has a base of operations in his local business, Puryear Race Parts. There’s a practical side to all of this. “We’ve got to be out there and be seen and have a nice looking car and … hopefully, people will buy some parts from us,” said Puryear. Puryear, 38, believes he’s made his point. “I’ve won a championship now. I’ve won a $15,000 race at Concord. I won a $10,000 race at Ace. I won a Hooters Procup race. The Lord has blessed me. “I’ve had an awesome career. But I just race now because I love it. I still love to drive a race car as much today when I was 16 years old. I’ve been doing it a long time. I just do it for the fun. “We need to promote Puryear Race Car Parts. We’ve got a race track two miles from my shop, and to only race here one time last year, that was disheartening,” said Puryear. This season, he’s planning to move around, have some fun, without another title chase in the works. “The last two years, we got caught up in points battles and things like that. I’d loved to run the Martinsville (all-star) late model race last year and the big money race here, but we were racing for a championship at Orange County, and they went all the way to the end of October. So, we had one car and one motor and we didn’t want to take a chance. We were leading the points,” said Puryear. This season, Puryear plans to race at Martinsville and compete in the big money event at SBS. He also hopes to race at Langley in July, the Hampton Heat 200, and the Caraway July 4 event. “It may be as many as eight or ten at South Boston. Having fun, man,” cracked Puryear. Halifax Sports
