Post 8 knocks off Henderson 11-1

The Post 8 American Legion continued its torrid play, rolling past Henderson, 11-1, on Tuesday night.

Post 8 also swept a doubleheader from South Alamance Sunday and has now improved to 8-6 on the season.

Ryan Puryear pitched very well Tuesday in the win over Henderson, fanning 14. He threw a no-hitter and allowed three walks, and one earned run. Puryear had ample support.

Post 8 finished with 11 hits, including a double and a homer. Tyler Long, one of the key offensive leaders this spring, went 3-for-4 with two runs scored and four RBI. Long belted a three-run homer in the six-run second inning.

Kelvin Davis also went 1-for-3 with two RBI. William Worley went 2-for-3 with one RBI, and Dylan Hendricks had a 2-for-2 outing, with three runs scored. Hendricks had two RBI.

Worley plated Long, who had doubled, with an RBI single in the first inning. Post 8 erupted in the second inning, ass Hendricks had an RBI single and Zack Clem got a run home on an bases loaded walk.

Earlier, Post 8 swept South Alamance.

Post 8 won the first game, 13-0. The local Legion club belted 15 hits, paced by a 3-for-3 outing from Clem, who also scored three runs. Davis went one-for-two with two RBI and two runs scored. Worley had a big game, going 4-for-4 with three RBI. Patrick Barton went 2-for-3 with a run scored and one RBI. Frankie Watson went 2-for-4 with two runs scored and one RBI.

Watson got the win, working four innings. He fanned three, walked one and checked South Alamance on three hits, keeping the visitors from North Carolina off the board.

Barton finished up, fanning one of the three batters he faced.

Post 8 squeezed out a 6-5 decision in game two. The key came in the three-run sixth, sparked by solid smallball. Dustin Davis and Ryan Puryear each bunted for basehits and Clem had an RBI flyout.

Post 8 managed just seven hits, led by R. Puryear, who was 2-for-2 with a run scored, and Clem, who went 2-for-3 with two runs scored.

Luke Griles got the win in relief, working the final three innings. He fanned three, allowed four hits and two runs, with only one earned.

SBS cranks up 2010 season Saturday

South Boston Speedway will crank up the 2010 season Saturday afternoon at 2 p.m. with the running of the NASCAR Whelen All-American Series Twin 75's race program.

Halifax County High School won its lone varsity baseball scrimmage, 6-4, over visiting Heritage Tuesday night, and head coach Kelvin Davis came away generally positive about the Comets’ efforts.
