Sports Pitching an issue

Halifax County High School won its lone varsity baseball scrimmage, 6-4, over visiting Heritage Tuesday night, and head coach Kelvin Davis came away generally positive about the Comets’ efforts.Davis said one goal was to give the pitchers an inning or two. “I thought our pitchers did well. It’s still early in the season, and we just wanted them to get up there and face some live batters.” Davis had one specific concern about the offense – “I thought we took too many pitches” – but otherwise, the Comets had a solid outing. “Defensively, I thought we played really well. It’s good to be out here. I can say some things as far as the baserunning. I can say a lot of things about different things. We just wanted to get out here and Heritage had a good ballclub. It was a good atmosphere out here for us,” said Davis. Pitching will get considerable focus from the Comet staff now. “The pitching has got to be there. We’re going to spend a lot of time with our pitchers this year. I think we’ve got a lot of potential on the pitching staff and we’re really going to focus on them this year,” said Davis. Davis has Tyler Long, a lefty who appears to be throwing almost in the mid-80s in terms of arm speed, and some other promising young hurlers. The Comets could have more depth on the mound staff than they have had recently. “We’re right where we need to be defensively. But the pitching is always going to be a big concern for me and we’ve got coach (Kenneth) Day working with them. We’re trying to spoon feed these guys. These guys have got a lot of potential and we’re going to try to really work with them to let them go on the mound and do what they need to do,” said Davis. HCHS starts the regular season next week.
