The Halifax County High School wrestling team finished fourth in the Western Valley District tournament Thursday at Franklin County high school.

Justin Perkins became the first two-time district champion for the Comets since Shannon Wright.

Ethan Collie (103) and Blake Jones (119) finished second for HCHS.

Ryan Throckmorton (112), Tyler Bentley (125), Ralph Tuck(130), and Gannon Griffin (140) all finished third and Lewis Ashworth (152) finished fourth. In all, eight Comet wrestlers qualified for this weekend’s Northwest Region Tournament.

Franklin County finished first, followed by Patrick Henry, George Washington, Halifax, and William Fleming.

Perkins’ tournament title proved a significant highlight for the Comet grapplers.

“Perkins wrestled a great tournament. He showed that if you keep going hard, you usually finish on top. We are glad to see him claim his second title, and that should set him up for a good run at regionals. Hopefully he can keep it up and qualify for states,” said Comet coach Brady Taylor.

“Putting three into the finals was good, but we really could have had two or three more make it. Overall, we wrestled pretty well. I’m glad some of the younger guys were able to pick up some wins,” said Taylor.

“Every wrestler that qualified for regionals earned it. They all had to win a match to earn their spot, which isn’t always the case. In the past we’ve had some wrestlers slide in without winning a match, just because there were only four people at their weight,” said Taylor.

“Hopefully we won’t have any weather issues this week, and we will be able to put in a good week of practice to prepare for regionals,” said Taylor. “If we keep wrestling as well as we’ve been, we should be able to qualify a few people for states,” said Taylor.
