Nationals outscore American in Angels action

The Halifax National Angels outscored Halifax American, 17-7, Tuesday night in Dixie Softball district tournament action at Charlotte Courthouse.

Three teams in angels’ district tournament action have one loss, including Charlotte County and both of the local entries.

The Americans met Charlotte County last night in an elimination game. The winner will meet HN for the district title tonight.

On Tuesday, the Nationals scored six runs in the first inning, one run in the second, three in the third and seven in the fourth.

The Americans got one run in the first but went scoreless until the fourth, when they picked up six runs.

The Nationals rolled early, scoring six runs in their first inning. After an error, Malasia Boyd and Skye Harlow walked to load the bases. With one out, Michaela Farson and Madison Hailey both walked to drive in runs. Erica Allgood followed with a grand slam to make it 6-0.

Madison Puryear walked, but no more runs were scored.

The Americans got a run in their first inning.

Sydney Henderson walked, and Sidney McLamb singled. Sara Beth Reese had a walk, as American scored one run.

In the Nationals’ second, Haley Wooding singled and Boyd walked to load the bases. Harlow hit into a fielder’s choice, as the Nationals surged ahead, 7-1.

In the Nationals’ third, walks to Hailey and Allgood made it 8-1. Puryear then walked to load the bases. Walks to Bales and Wooding plated two more runs for a 10-1 lead.

In the top of the fourth, Boyd walked and Harlow doubled her home. An error made it 12-1.

Hailey walked and Allgood drove in a run with a single. Amber Moore singled for another run. Puryear walked to load the bases. Terri Murray tripled in three runs.

Bales and Wooding walked, but the Nationals did not have any more offense in that inning.

The Americans cut the gap in the bottom of the fourth. Katie Gregory singled and two errors loaded the bases. An error and walks to Alexis Dorsey and Morgan Puckett loaded the sacks. A double from Heather Griles scored two runs. Kennedy Dyer walked, and Katelyn Moser drove in a run with a fielder’s choice, and the game ended with a 17-7 win for the Nationals.

Brandon, Henderson and Gregory pitched for Halifax American, and they had three hits. That production included a Brandon double, a Griles double and a single from McLamb.

Halifax National got a fine pitching effort from Logan Redd, who worked four innings. She allowed three hits, fanned four and walked six.

The Nationals finished with six hits, including a homer and single from Allgood. Murray tripled, Harlow doubled, and Wooding and Moore hit singles. In earlier action Sunday, Halifax National slipped past Motley, 9-8.

HN did all of its scoring in the first inning (four runs) and the third (five runs). Motley scored five runs in the fourth and two in the fifth to almost close the gap.

HN got out to a fine start in its first inning.

To start the inning, Faith Lester, Malasia Boyd and Skye Harlow walked to load the bases. Logan Redd then smacked an infield single to score one run. Michaela Farson walked to score a run, and Madison Hailey drew another free pass to get a run home.

Amber Moore grounded out to score a run and Madison Puryear walked, but HN could not generate any more offense.

HN did more damage in the third. Leading 4-1, Boyd walked and Harlow singled to start the third. Hailey walked to load the bases with two out.

Erica Allgood then singled to score two runs.

Moore walked, and then Puryear drew a free pass to score a run.

Terri Murray and Abbey Bales both walked to score two runs. HN held a 9-1 lead.

Motley rallied in its half of the fourth. Motley scored five runs on two hits, four walks and one error to make it 9-6.

Motley came back with two more runs in its last at-bat, but it was not enough.

With one out, after allowing two hits and an error, Amber Moore was relieved. Logan Redd took over with the locals winning 9-7. Redd struck out the next batter, but then two errors allowed Motley to close within one run, trailing 9-8, with the bases loaded. Redd then struck out the next batter to preserve the win.

Moore threw five innings, allowing four hits, with six strikeouts and five walks. Redd threw one inning, with no hits, two strikeouts and no walks. The locals had just three hits, as Harlow, Redd and Allgood singled.

In other Sunday action for the Angels, Halifax American edged Charlotte County, 6-5, in a thriller.

Charlotte County moved out to a 1-0 lead. Then, in the second inning, Emily Frietas hit into a fielder’s choice to drive in a run to tie the game.

Katelyn Moser rapped an infield single to put Halifax American ahead 2-1. HA later had to rally again. Down 4-2 in the third, the locals got several walks and an error to force a 4-4 deadlock.

Then, in the top of the fifth, Charlotte County established a 5-4 lead. The Americans pulled it out with two runs in their final at-bat.

Sidney McLamb singled, and Mya Brandon followed with a single. A walk loaded the bases.

Alexis Dorsey drew a walk to tie the score, 5-5. Kennedy Dyer drew another walk to score another run for a thrilling 6-5 win.

Sydney Henderson, Kennedy Dyer and Sidney McLamb all pitched for Halifax American.
