McCaskill hopes to close the gap

SoVaNow.com / March 10, 2010
Deac McCaskill expects to be a serious NASCAR late model contender at South Boston Speedway this season.

“Back up here at South Boston for another year. We’ve been up here for two years in the past. Run pretty good the last couple of years, trying to get us a championship,” said McCaskill.

McCaskill, who finished fourth in the final late model chase in 2009, had some tough luck in the title chase.

“We led the points for a long time. Just had a couple of bad races,” said the popular veteran.

McCaskill is expecting a strong field of late models again in 2010, averaging 18 to 22-23 cars a week.

He hopes to get better, with an eye on closing the gap this year. Justin Johnson won the division last year, followed by second place finisher David Quackenbush and third place finisher Nick Smith.

“Just got run good every week. You’ve got to prepare yourself, prepare the car. If you have an off night, take what it can give you. Try not to get more than you ask for. I think that’s what hurt me last year a couple of times, just being a little too aggressive,” said McCaskill.

He has some regrets about last season, particularly one costly race night.

“Last year, we came up on some lapped cars. I made some decisions I shouldn’t have made. I think that one night kind of cost me the championship. I try to not look back at it now, because it was pretty sickening to look at,” said McCaskill.

But he figures Smith had back luck, too. “Nick, last year, had a ton of bad luck. If he hadn’t had all that bad luck, he’d probably walked away (with the title),” said McCaskill.

The steady, professional driver was back at it Saturday, tuning up for the season opening Twin 75s.

McCaskill ran the motor to make sure he didn’t have mechanical gremlins to deal with, and also tried some different strategies for more speed.

“We’ve run for so long, I know what I need. I’m ready to race right now. We’re just kind of trying some different stuff, but not a whole lot. Just see if we can pick up a little bit of speed,” said McCaskill.

McCaskill is basically unsponsored this year, although he has some help with the tire costs. His biggest booster is engine builder John West.

Without his help, McCaskill would not be at SBS again this season.

McCaskill is comfortable with Saturday’s format, with Twin 75s to open what’s expected to be another bruising late model campaign at SBS. “I like it. You get two races in one night. It helps us out with the points system nationally and in state.

“You walk out of here (after the weekend) with a win and a second place, it’s better than running second in a 150-lap race … as far as money-wise,” said McCaskill.

The latest chapter in McCaskill’s career – and another intense SBS title hunt – starts anew Saturday.
